I have only seen laymen use "race" when they mean "ethnicity"; it's something I've yet to encounter in the mounds of anthropological works I have read or am reading (mind you, I've read stuff from the mid-20th century and earlier).

That said, I've never heard of Jews as a race either but as a religion and ethnicity.
That's because anthropologists function on the idea that race is a cultural construct (in regards to humans) and has no basis in biology.

That's what I was trying to allude to wink

ADD: I see how you may have mistaken my sentence though. No fault of yours; my semantics sucked. I was trying to say I've yet to hear an anthropologist use "race" and "ethnicity" interchangeably like that.

I get the impression that "ethnicity" started to get used instead of "race" in an attempt to get rid of the misconceptions that the nazis had used.

I can see that. I just wasn't certain because of the wording.

Hello folks, I'm an orthodox Jew so yes I do know what I'm talking about. Judaism has two major parts in terms of being Jewish. Firstly, you practice Judaism, like with Orthodox or Reform of Conservative and whatnot. The second thing that makes you Jewish is being born Jewish. Judaism is passed down the Maternal Line, so if your mother was Jewish, and her mother was Jewish, and her mother was Jewish, and so on and so forth until you get back to Mount Sinai. So Judaism is an ethnicity, race, whatever you want to call it. At the same time, it's also a religion.
