Mari paused, watching the way the boy seemed to cringe away. He was acting like someone who had been abused too often, and it wasn't a reaction she expected from one so small and young. Still... taking a step in and opening the door wider, she turned to meet Isa's eyes.

"I'm going to make some soup. Chicken noodle, probably. I'll bring out the first aid kit and leave it in the study. It's small and warm so..."

Isa nodded her head.

"Come on, let's go into the study. It's just two doors away, and you'll be fine. Its warm, you'll have food and..." you can tell me what happened. But she didn't add the last part. Not yet.

His breathing bothered her, a little bit. Was he hurt, too much? Was it exhaustion, that was easier to handle? Or was there an intangible, emotional aspect to it as well?

She didn't know, and she wanted to.

"Just through here." she said, motioning to the door and nudging it open with a foot.

Nikolai didn't have much strength left in his little body when they did make it to the study. Each breath was a labor in itself and his side was starting to sting from the change of warm air for the bitter cold he'd been in since returning to this world.

When a chance to lay down presented itself Nikolai welcomed it with great relief. He didn't even get onto a chair to sit but instead lowered himself onto the floor beside one and lay on his good side.

At last.... he could slowly start to feel the numbness leave his toes and fingers and his eyes lulled closed. He was too exhausted to even think about the woman in the house along with Isa as Nikolai relished the new warm surroundings.

Nikolai could almost picture the sanctum when he closed his eyes. He felt safe now.

Isa released her hold on the herald and took a step back, and then another. Pulling off her own coat and shoes, she frowned as she watched his eyes close. It wouldn't be the most comfortable spot in the study, but she herself liked to take naps on the warm wooden floors, so it couldn't be that bad. Turning her glance back at the door, she saw Mari approach and shook her head. She'd take care of this.

Reaching for the first aid kit that her guardian held, she smiled before closing the door behind her. This one obviously didn't seem to like being around others, and so it would be the best she could do... for now.

Maybe later, maybe later, things could change.

"Are you okay?" walking back towards her new patient, she knelt in front of him, putting the first aid kit to her side. "I know you're tired, but...." she hesitated. "I've got a blanket here somewhere, but if you're hurt..." she frowned.

What was she going to do now?

"I'm Isa."

The warmth of the house seemed to cast a spell on Nikolai, leaving a haze in his head as his body relaxed. He'd nearly drifted off to sleep until...

"Are you okay?"

Eyes blinking open, Nikolai blearily fixed his gaze on Isa and listened as best he could to what she said. Carefully he pulled the scarf she'd given him away from his head and took it off entirely. With a few deep breaths the boy coughed and shivered a little.

"Nikolai...." He said quietly, voice hoarse from disuse.

Was he hurt? Nikolai was exhausted and had to think about it before answering with a nod. Yes, yes he was. His shoulder was throbbing with each movement and the weight of his wings weren't helping it any.

Resting a hand on his shoulder Nikolai coughed again more loudly than the last time. "I... I landed on my shoulder..."

Isa frowned, nodding her head. She didn't know the first thing about fixing a shoulder, nor how quickly he would heal. All she knew was that a bad shoulder sucked, and that his wings were heavy enough to aggravate it.

"Let me see." she opened up the first aid kit, wondering what inside she could use to fix a shoulder. Maybe it was just bruised. Maybe she should bandage it up... maybe...

Getting up, she moved to drag the blanket and a couple of soft cushions from the chair in the study towards Nikolai. At least she knew his name now. Dropping the blanket next to him and kneeling again, she reached for a pillow to prop up his back with. "It'll be more comfortable." asking him to move to the sofa seemed to be asking for too much, and all she needed to see was that the shoulder was fine...

Isa sighed, shaking her head.

If it wasn't...

Well, she'd deal with it then.

Grateful for something to rest under his wing, Nikolai was more than accomodating when the younger Herald put the pillow under his other wing. Letting out a deep sigh the boy relaxed more visabley and started to unbutton his coat.

Sloughing it off his shoulder it was more than a little obvious what he'd done. The odd lump behind his collar bone and the purple color setting in were good signs he'd dislocated it. Each movement of his arm was agony, and his wings even more so but at least Nikolai hadn't broken anything.

Still, it would take someone stronger than Isa to pop it back into place and the young Herald was not going to let Marion touch him any time soon. That much was more than clear by how he reacted to the Guardian.

Isa couldn't help but stare with dismay at the angry bruising, and at the odd shape of his shoulder. There was something wrong, something broken, and she couldn't even think of how she was supposed to fix this. She didn't even know what was wrong exactly, just that it looked broken and ... and it wasn't supposed to be.

"Nikolai." she stared at the bruising, reaching out with hand hand and pulled herself back. Controlled herself, knowing that it wouldn't help to touch the shoulder. "Nikolai, I can't fix it. I can't. I can't." there was frustration in her voice, as well as anger as she looked away. "I need to call Mari. I need to..." she couldn't look up at the boy, not wanting to see his response. He hadn't let her guardian near him at all.

"I don't know what to do. What shall I do?"

Would this instill confidence in her patient? Definitely not. But she fastened her gaze with his.

She needed to know.

When Nikolai heard the little girl could do nothing to help her he looked down sadly. The shoulder hurt too much to put the coat back on and simply laid down again.

"I need to call Mari..."

Nikolai's eyes widened and sat up like a shot only to give a shout of pain at the stupid act. That was a very bad idea. Breathing deeply he hissed in pain and closed his teeth a moment, hoping it would pass. When he was able to open his eyes again tears had started to well in the corners of his eyes though he didn't shed them just yet.

The pain made him keep from denying help right away; if Mari could make the pain stop... maybe he could stand to be around the human long enough to accomplish that.

"Go-go get her." He hissed through his teeth, grimacing through the new pain.

Relief shot through her face. Relief that he was agreeing, and concern at the amount of pain that played across his face. Without responding, she got up and ran to the door, pulling it open.

"Mari! Somethings wrong with his shoulder and I don't know what to do."

It didn't take long for her guardian to come running into the room: Isa had a feeling that she had probably been lurking outside somewhere, waiting to see if there was anything she could do. She felt warmth towards her guardian, warmth and gratitude.

"He's.. oh my."

Mari saw the bruising, the bump. It was a dislocated shoulder: the only reason for her recognizing it being that she had seen and had to deal with it growing up, with her brothers. She paused for a moment, just a moment before determination flashed on her features.

"I don't care if you don't want me near you, but you have a dislocated shoulder and we need to fix it. Its going to hurt, for a while. More than you're hurting now. But I can fix it."

She took a couple of steps forwards, close enough to touch him, close enough to help, but didn't take the final step to actually do so. "I need you to not be afraid, for a while."

When Isa fled the room Nikolai did his best to make himself comfortable. The pain was unlike anything he'd experianced before and it was all he could do to keep from shouting again.

Then the human returned.

Nikolai turned his head to look at her with a hard gaze, the trails the tears had left staining his cheeks. Feathers bristled and he tensed for all the good it did him as it only hurt his shoulder more.

Still he didn't try and run off for the time being. Isa said she could help him and the woman said she knew what was wrong. Against his better judgement Nikolai would have to put his faith in the Guardian.

Isa settled in to Nikolai's other side, hesitating as she looked at Mari. She nodded once, and the fact that the herald had not moved away seemed to be enough for the guardian. She knelt, frowning as she looked at the shoulder. The determined glint in her eyes darkened as she placed one firm hand on his shoulder and back, fingers almost brushing the wings. She bent his arm at the elbow, slowly rotating his arm towards his chest. Taking a deep breath, Mari rotated it outwards, repeating the process once, twice.

She worked in silence, not trusting herself to speak. It had been a while since her brothers had been foolish enough, and this wasn't something she wanted to admit out loud to a herald who already seemed to distrust her.

Feeling, rather than hearing the arm pop back into the joint, she looked up at Nikolai's face.

"Better." she said, speaking more to herself than to the other herald. "Isa, we'll need to make him a sling to make sure he doesn't move his arm." her job was done here, and a sling was simple enough that she wouldn't need to do it herself
PostPosted: Tue Nov 30, 2010 5:16 pm

When Mari touched him Nikolai froze. With how stiff he was it didn't make things any easier; anyone might have guessed that it wouldn't pop back on the first try.

With his shoulder moving Nikolai grimaced and stiffed even more and after the first rotation his good wing flapped a bit harder than he probably should have. Crying out the boy's fists clenched as Mari moved him, straining against her until his shoulder popped back into place.

This was worse than any pain Nikolai had endured before without a doubt and curled up into a fetal position when Mari finally let him go. Sobbing, Nikolai's wing hung limply at his side since it was too painful to hold against his back like the other one.

Isa had reached for the large makeshift sling that they kept folded at the base of the kit, but at the sob she let go, instead turning towards Nikolai. She reached out with both hands, leaning over him, one hand held gently almost over his limp wind, the other on his hair.

"It's supposed to get better, right?" she couldn't imagine how it felt though, nor how it compared to falling out of the sky.

Stories, later. She was still curious, but...

"We need to put the arm in a sling, so it doesn't move. Its supposed to help and..." without thinking, her other hand started to lightly stroke his wings. "it'll get better."

It had to. Maybe saying it would make it happen faster.

Nikolai shook with sobs at the pain rocking through his little body. He didn't acknowledge either of the pair through it, and even the petting didn't seem to catch his notice.

All he wanted was for the pain to stop.

As Mari pet his head the boy's knit cap slid back and revealed the glowing circlet of lights around his forehead. His hair was the pure white of any young Herald just like Isa's.

Isa stared at the halo of lights. His hair was the same color as hers, but he was bigger. He was... different, the way Michael had been different. Was it age, then? Evolution? Isa curled closer, reaching for the blanket and spreading it out around the two of them for warmth.

"I'm going to make you something to eat, and I'll leave it outside." Mari spoke quietly, her voice hushed and gentle. Isa looked up to nod her head as she rearranged the pillows, pausing occasionally to make sure that she wasn't disturbing her new visitor too much.

Maybe he couldn't speak, because of the pain. Isa herself didn't know what to say that wouldn't end up sounding like a question. So instead she curled herself around the boy, stroking his hair every so often.

"You should sleep."
