Alba mentally noted Claire's hesitation, but didn't comment on it or the strength of her handshake. You could read a lot in a person's handshake alone, if you knew what to look for. Too bad Alba wasn't one of those people yet. All that he could deduce, as he returned with his own determined but careful grip, was that this was someone who could definitely hold her own.
"Ah, yes, thank you." He accepted the pokeball with both hands, as though worried he'd drop it. Spook, noticing what was going on with the humans, turned her attentions from the hungry mouse. She abandoned the half cleaned mess and floated closer for a better look at what Alba held. "Ch~ing?" The pokeball twitched just the slightest, it's occupant possibly knowing of the other Pokemon's presence.
Alba nodded at Claire's comment on the Pidgey's gender. "It can be hard to tell. I wouldn't have known that Spook is female if she hadn't insisted on it herself, and even then she had to be checked when I signed on to be sure."

She also didn't comment on her own hesitation, though that was more because she didn't like to talk about herself that much. "You're quite welcome, and thank you. Now Odette won't be able to kill it and I can finally get a little peace of mind, though she'll be upset with me for at least a few more days..." Silly Pidgeot. "She's such a vain thing."
Violet eyes watched the pokeball twitch in his hands and a small smile touched her lips. "I meant more that it's hard to tell when it won't hold still, too busy running around. But, when I got Odette they told me what gender she was - I confirmed that at a pokemon center later, of course - but regardless I can't imagine a male Pidgeot acting the way she does," Claire explained with a roll of her eyes. "Anyway, would you like to help me make some cookies? I -- Zeus! Put those crackers away or you won't have any room for cookies in that fat stomach of yours!" She huffed, directing a pointed glare at the Pikachu.
His ears flopped back and he grumbled to himself as he shoved the rest of the crackers back into the box. He may or may not have purposefully broke a bunch of them in half while putting them away.

Alba bit back a grin at the Pikachu's antics. That is, until Spook floated back to the counter, watched Zeus curiously, and experimentally tapped her foot on a cracker. Adding pressure, she stilled with a small, startled squeak when the cracker finally snapped and crunched. That... was so COOL! She wanted to try that agai-
"Spook!" Alba barked, and the Chingling instantly froze on the way to the next cracker. "Clean it up, then get over here." Spook pouted and looked at him with bright, beady black eyes. She gave up when his even stare and stiff posture didn't falter.
Alba let out a breath as Spook returned to sweeping up crumbs and broken crackers. "Sorry," he said, turning back to Claire. "Right, um, cookies. I would like to help, and it's the least I can do in return for, y'know, this." He motioned with the hand still holding the pokeball and finally clipped it to his belt. "I haven't cooked or baked anything in ages, though. I'd hate to ruin it for you." He a small frown of genuine concern slipped briefly across his features. It had to have been well over a decade now since he last even touched a stove or oven.

"You too, Zeus," Claire said. The Pikachu snorted and made funny faces behind his owner's back. "I can see those faces you're making, Zeus. Do you want cookies? I could make them and eat them all myself." Like hell she would eat them all herself, but he didn't know that.
The electric-type gaped before he hurried to help Spook finish cleaning up the box, then he slid it up against the back of the counter before running across the countertop. He slid to a stop near all of Claire's cookie-making equipment, and she nodded. "It's really no problem. I know the recipe and as long as we follow it exactly, the cookies will be fine." As if to help, in case her word wasn't enough, she touched a piece of paper on the counter and slid it over in front of Alba - it was a list of the types and amounts of ingredients, as well as instructions.
"I haven't really gotten too far yet - could you pre-heat the oven for me please?" She asked as she cracked another egg and dumped it into the bowl. Thankfully the cookies were quite simple. She then measured out the flour before pouring it in as well, and did the same for a couple more ingredients. She paused, looking around before realizing she forgot something. "Ah, Alba? Do you know where an electric mixer is?" She should have looked for one before starting, but no matter.

What could Alba say to that? "Uh, a... alright." Oh yeah. So cool, there. Not really.
The trainee approached so as to gain a better view of the recipe. It looked easy enough, and all he'd really be doing would be following any directions Claire gave him. Like with the oven. "Sure. Let's see here..." Press "bake," enter the temperature memorized from the list, press start. Alba couldn't help a small, relieved smirk. It was just like the oven in his old apartment had been. Good to know- As an afterthought, Alba discreetly tipped forward the door to check inside. Satisfied that nothing was stored inside -- not that he'd ever done so! -- he turned back to Claire when he was called.
"Electri... No. Can't say that I do." Alba glanced around him at the cabinets, trying to think of where such a thing might be stored. "Do you know, Spook?" Spook chimed, but shook her head before floating over to perch on his shoulder.

She watched him turn the oven on out of the corner of her eye, grateful to have a bit of help. "Alright, electric mixer.. Hmm..." After a bit of foraging around the kitchen she managed to find one, pulled it out, plugged it in, and started mixing the dough. With Alba's help it wasn't long before the dough was made, the cookies placed on sheets and put in the oven to bake.
As they cooked, Claire rinsed off the used cooking instruments before putting them into a dishwasher. "Thanks for your help with the cookies," she said as Zeus pawed at her leg from the floor, blatantly begging for the rest of the cookie dough from the bowl, or at least the spoon... But his trainer would not even consider this, so she simply ignored him for the time being. "So what do you think you'll name the Pidgey?" She really had no idea what to talk about.

Alba thought about the question for a second or two. Meanwhile, he set to work putting away the mixer and ingredients. "Hmm... Not really sure. Never was all that creative. What do you think, Spook?" He'd relaxed a considerable amount during the whole baking process, no longer acting like the jumpy and tense person from when he'd entered.
The Chingling chimed from the other end of the counter. She'd obediently been holding onto the Pidgey's Pokeball for her trainer, rotating it and looking at it curiously from perhaps every angle. "Ching. Ling ching!" Rotating the pokeball again, Spook tapped just next to the release button. She gave Alba an expectant look.
Her trainer shrugged, crossing his arms loosely and turning back Claire. "Strange to say it, but Spook knows me pretty well. I'll probably need to let it out to decide on anything for sure." He glanced to the ceiling, and gave an almost embarrassed smiled at a memory. "Took about a day just to settle on hers." He tilted his head in a nod at the Chingling.

At being thoroughly and completely ignored, Zeus remained sitting on the floor, crossing his arms as his tail drooped, ears flicking back and looking as displeased as he possibly could. His pouting looked more comical than anything else. "Names can be hard," she replied, watching Zeus pout out of the corner of her eye. Creativity with names.. It hadn't occurred to her really, but she liked to think of nice names for her pokemon, and she supposed there was some bit of creativity in that. "I forget if I've mentioned mine, but they're Zeus," a boot shifted and hovered near the electric-type as if about to nudge him over, but the Pikachu pushed it away with a growl, "and Odette. Neither took too long, I don't think, but I think it helps to get a feel for their personalities. Careful when you let it out though, it might be a bit nervous and flighty because of Odette." Poor thing. The Pidgeot was thoroughly incorrigible sometimes...

Alba nodded his acknowledgement as Zeus was officially introduced, and bit the inside of his lip just slightly at the mention of the Pidgey being nervous. "Yeah," he said slowly, eyeing the Poke Ball in Spook's limited grasp. "Thinking I'll wait until I'm in a safer, less food filled location before I go letting it out. I doubt too many people would like me for letting a twitchy Pidgey get feathers all over the kitchen." Especially if Spook saw it fit to pull her usual scare tactics. Which reminded him...
"Spook and I joined up in Ambergris. I actually named her something else completely at first. 'Spook' was just a joke for the first night. The next day, she successfully scared the ever loving daylights out of me at least twice before I ditched the original name and stuck with this one." He cast a halfhearted glare at Spook, who simply beamed goofily in return.

"Good idea," she said after glancing around the kitchen. It probably wouldn't be very good to get feathers everywhere. Something about potentially getting in trouble for it at some point..
A soft 'ding' sounded from the oven, so Claire turned and opened it a crack to see how the cookies looked. Good - they smelled heavenly, too, and she could've sworn she heard Zeus' stomach growl - though she wasn't sure.. Well, she didn't want to overcook them, and gooey cookies were, in her opinion, much better than hard, crispy ones. So, after finding something to grab the tray with to prevent her hands from getting third degree burns, she pulled the cookie sheet out and set it on the stove while Alba talked about meeting Spook. "What was her name before then?" She asked over her shoulder while using a spatula to experimentally prod the cookies. They didn't look like they were about to fall apart as soon as she tried to move them, so she started scooping them off the tray and laying them onto a cooling rack. Mmm, cookies...

"Aria." Alba moved out of Claire's way as she worked. "My e... friend... once told me it had something to do with music. At least, I think that's what she said." He pressed the "off" button on the oven, and was promptly satisfied with the resounding click as the appliance shut down. "For a giant bell, it seemed fitting."

She couldn't help but wonder what he was going to say - ex, possibly - but decided against asking. "It does seem a fitting name - too bad she had other ideas," she commented with a chuckle as she finished putting the last of the cookies onto the cooling rack and quickly cleaned off the tray. Since the cookies didn't stick, there wasn't too much cleaning to do.
While she was preoccupied, Zeus tried to sneakily get up onto the counter - if by sneakily you mean right in front of everyone with lots of scrabbling and grunting noises - but got stuck with his front paws clinging to the edge of the counter while his back paws scratched against the cabinets. Without looking at him, Claire reached over to pick up the spatula she'd used to move the cookies, presumably to clean it, but not without first giving Zeus a smack on the head with it. He fell down with a squeal and landed on his rump on the unforgiving floor, and promptly glared at his trainer with sparks crackling dangerously against his red cheeks. She still didn't look at him, looking completely unperturbed by his threatening behavior, and the reason why soon became clear when the Pikachu eventually turned away with a huff, his cheeks ceasing their sparking.
After she'd washed the spatula too, she dried her hands and held one directly above the cookies. She lowered it slowly until it was hovering barely an inch above them, then gingerly attempted to pick one up. "They should be cool by now, I think," she said as she lifted it, turning it over in her hand before taking a bite. "Mmph. Still really warm, but they won't burn your mouth or anything." That said after swallowing, of course, so she picked up another with her other hand before passing it down to Zeus, who quickly shoved it into his mouth and sat there without chewing, just savoring the flavor and warmth with an incredibly pleased and content expression on his face.

Securing the Pokeball in her care between cracker boxes, Spook shuffled her way around the counters. She sat about a foot of way, not sure exactly what she was dealing with but knowing that by gosh those round things smelled gooooood...
Alba snorted at the display. "Thanks." Stepping forward, he picked up one of the cookies, broke it easily down the middle, and passed one of the halves to Spook. The Chingling studied the treat carefully, even glancing a few times between Claire and Zeus below as though observing how to go about this. Alba smiled. "I don't think she's ever seen a cookie before, or at least not a fresh one. She acted just like this when we met, except it was a PB and J she couldn't figure out." He took a careful bite of his cookie half, making sure to properly chew and swallow before speaking, because Spook was now observing him. "These really are good, though."

Zeus finally finished his cookie and flailed an arm up at Claire for another one. "Chuuu!"
After rolling her eyes, she passed him a second one, then added in a stern tone, "no more." He didn't seem to hear her though, having shoved the cookie into his mouth and adopted the pleased expression, just the same as before. Oh well, whatever. She shrugged lightly and took another bite of her cookie. "They are," she agreed after a few moments filled with chewing delicious, warm gooey cookie, "thanks for your help. Take a few, I'm going to pack up the rest and hide them in my room." After all that effort, she wasn't wasting it by leaving them in the kitchen for whoever to eat, oh no. These were delicious, and she would save them all for herself. And Zeus, of course. Odette didn't really like cookies. Maybe she'd share with Len... Nah, she wouldn't share with that crazy bibliophile. Too crazy.

Spook must have decided the half of a round thing she was holding was indeed safe to eat. Copying Zeus' technique, she shoved the entire piece into her mouth at once. Alba was terrified that she had choked herself when she suddenly rolled backward, but a happy, "Liiiii~iiiii~iiing~" put his fears to rest. Especially when she sat up again with a blissful expression. He couldn't help it, he had to laugh at that.
"I guess she approves," he said, pulling himself together again. Grabbing a paper towel, he wrapped three to take with him. "Thanks for these, then, and again for this." He'd walked back over to where Spook had left the new addition to their team, and attached the ball next to Spook's empty one on his belt.
