She thought it was beautiful? His eyes sparkled cheerfully from the compliment. He'd always loved song but he'd never actually thought that he was very talented. His mother was extraordinarily talented but he only considered himself to be above average. To have someone tell him otherwise felt good. "Mm-nnn, thank you." He said graciously. She shouldn't be thanking him for his performance after all, wasn't that part of the game? He had to do it.
And then, the thanks he felt for her earlier compliment faltered as she reminded him that he wasn't the best flyer. If she had just left it there he would have grumbled about how he was still young and it was normal for young winged creatures to have difficulty flying. However, it seemed that taking digs at him was not at all what she had on her mind.
Lessons?
She wanted to trade lessons? Flying for singing. If she hadn't seemed so serious he would have thought she was just kidding around. Trouble was, he didn't even know where to start. He was no teacher. When she made her choice for the game he suddenly got an idea for a starting point.
"Okay, you heard me sing. Now let me hear you. That's your dare." The serious tone in his voice made him seem very demanding and maybe even a little mean. It was something that he needed to hear though. No one could teach without knowing what they were working with, right?

H-Hear her sing? Well she should have expected it, however so soon, she looked at him shyly. She usually sang to herself however to sing in front of another and know they were going to be analysing it was another matter and the usually outgoing filly was now reduced to one which could be mistaken as quite timid. She took in a deep breath and closed her eyes. She had always been one to believe that if you cannot see what you are afraid of it cannot be as scary as if it were staring you in the face. She was very stuck at what to sing. Her mother had never really taught her any songs, however she had once heard her grandmother sing something and it was the only thing she knew, beyond the very young foal jingles that everyone knew.
“The mouth of just will meditate wisdom
And his tongue will shall speak judgment.
Blessed is the man who hath enduredth temptation,
For when he hath been proven.
he shall receive a crown of the life.
Lord, fire divine, have mercy.
Oh how sweet, how serene.
How benign, how pleasurable.
Oh, lily of purity.”
She finally finished, opening one of her eyes to look at him and then looking away and laughing nervously as soon as she saw him looking at her. ”Haha... I wasn’t that bad right?” She gave a cheeky smile, believing she sucked. Of cause no one was going to be brilliant at something they did not practise and understand. Her mother and grandmother have taught her many prayers and hymns over the years, as a form of worship to the spirits. She did not know if others even counted that as singing. To get over the awkwardness she felt she looked at him and smiled, nudging the side of his face with her nose. “Truth or dare?”

His ears twitched back and forth as she sang her tune. For the life of him he could not determine if she was good at singing or not. At points her song was quite good but at others she would go flat or simply hit a note that was somewhat less than pleasing to the ears. Over all he'd rank her somewhere around average, perhaps a point or two above fifty on a hundred point scale. "No, you weren't bad." He confirmed neglecting to praise her attempt. It simply hadn't occurred to do such a thing.
He'd gotten what he'd needed. A sampling of her voice. He knew more or less how she needed to improve, but he wasn't entirely sure how to go about instructing her. Telling her to 'practice' wouldn't be as effective with her as it would be for him. His vocal cords just needed to develop further and get used to being used for song. Hers...did they need something more specific? He eyed her somewhat critically without realizing that his eyes had grown somewhat cold. There had to be something to really tell her to help her improve but what?
"Truth." He selected casually as his expression softened. He needed a little bit more time to think about the potential future lessons and he got the feeling she wasn't going to want to wait another hour for him to continue the game while he thought. He'd kept her waiting long enough already.

 It was getting late and as usual one of her three little angels had set off on her own adventure. Essence was a free spirit and even though she did not intend to worry her mother she sometimes lost track of time or forget to mention where she was going. She was not a bad child, just a little dim. Despite this it was made up for with her lovable and innocent nature, anyway the young filly never got far and it was quite easy for Terentia to seek her out when need be. It was not long until she came across the field and her dark eyes caught site of her beloved daughter with another foal.
She looked on tilting her head, she had never met this colt before so either he was a new face or her little daughter had been keeping secrets. She had always said she took after her Auntie Neria, with her stories of princes and hero’s. She let out a small laugh under her breath and approached the two slowly. “Essence, it is almost time to come home darling. Your brothers are already back with your father.” She stated standing still just a few meters away from the children. “You have not been getting into trouble have you?” She added with a small smirk.
Essence smiled and looked at him cocking her head to one side. She knew she was far from the best and she really appreciated him not laughing. He was a nice guy, she knew that much and was really looking forward to her singing lessons. She thought for a moment about her question and then opened her mouth to ask it only to be interrupted by a familiar voice. The young filly looked over her shoulder and caught sight of her mother; she gave a small chuckle and in the blink of the eye was up heading towards the larger angeni mare.
“Mummy! Look, I have someone I want you to meet. This is Vivace.” She explained sounding very proud of herself as she lead the golden haired mare over to where she had been resting with her new friend. She beamed a very cheerful smile in his direction. Essence loved her mother very much and just knew that she would love Vivace, she was always kind to anyone her daughter brought home. She smiled again and looked up at her mother closing her eyes shaking her head. “Of cause Mummy, Vivace has been taking care of me.” She added skipping playfully to the side of her friend and giving him a small nudge with her nose.
Terentia smiled and nodded her head. Her daughter had no concept of personal space despite how much she told her somewhere uncomfortable with being man handled. She bowed her head slightly down to the new face. “Hello Vivace, I am Terentia, thank you for keeping my daughter out of trouble, she can be a handful.”

Vivace caught sight of the strange mare approaching them a little before she spoke. His wings twitched and fluttered nervously. He had approached Essence with practically no trouble at all. However, this was a full grown mare and there was something decidedly eerie about her. Like himself and Essence the mare had feathered wings but they were dark as pitch, not unlike the majority of her mane.
So when she spoke of family and Essence cried out with 'Mummy!' Vivace find himself utterly baffled.
For several moments he did nothing but look from his friend to the mare with his brows knit together in confusion. He could sort of see the resemblance. They had the same mostly white body and upon closer inspection he could see that the mare also had a ghostly set of mirror wings. They could be related...sure.
Aw who was he kidding? He had to turn his head to the side and squint to see any real relation. The only thing they seemed to share were those angelic features and, heaven help him, the mare didn't seem to have any eyes! Still, Essence said it was her mother, who was he to doubt her? A kid knew there own mom.
"Ummm...hello..." He said finally well aware that he was being a bit rude by taking so long and staring. "It was...no trouble." He was mumbling. This was all rather awkward for him. He glanced at Essence as though pleading for rescue. "It was fun playing with Essence..."

Essence smiled and blushed lightly as he spoke. “It was fun playing with you too! We have to do it again sometime!” She chuckled and nuzzled his cheek lightly before she got up and skipped back over to her mother, weaving her small frame in-between her legs. Her pale eyes looked up at her mother and a sweet smile came onto her face. She loved both her parents very much and even though her mother always seemed to be... more serious than her father it did not mean she saw her in a different light.
Terentia bowed her head towards the young foal, her dark eyes then falling to look at her daughter. “I am sure you will be able to see your friend soon my dear, however your brothers are already home and it’s getting late, so say goodbye.” She stated, her daughter was quite flighty, she never seemed to have problems socializing and making friends, she just sometimes hoped this never leads her into any dangerous situations, not all could be trusted. She would need to learn, however for now as a foal she saw nothing wrong with her discovering herself. She just wished she would not approach strangers when she was not around.
Terentia turned her attention back towards the winged foal. “It was a pleasure to meet you young one, bless you.” She nodded before the mare turned and started to make her way back over towards the more forested area to return to their home field.
Essence pouted slightly, however she knew when her mother said it was time to come home it was time for her to call it a day, she moved back towards her friend and smiled, batting her eyelashes once last time and tilted her head. “Well. I guess this is goodbye for now. Can I maybe see you again? Sometime... sooner rather than later I hope!”

It was strange saying 'hello' just before hearing the words 'good bye.' He supposed in this case it was only natural, Essence's mother had only come to collect her after all. It wasn't like she was going to stay for a visit or a play day. He still had a hard time believing that the two were related even if it was clear they had that special bond, the bond between mother and child.
"I'd like that." He said with a smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes. Really he would, it felt as though their time had been cut to short today as it was. "I'll keep coming back to this field to play." He meant this with all his heart and there was no way he'd back out of it. "Come look for me here when you want to see me again."
Still smiling he turned away from the pair with a polite bow before trotting off back to where home was. It had been a short day but a good one. Though there was no point in sticking around if Essence was leaving. He'd have no one to talk to then. It was time to return to his own family. As he drifted further away he began to sing a song with no words, a tune to remember him by.
