And maybe his plan was not going to work as well as he’d thought it might a few moments ago. Actually, now he quite wished he could take his comment back. It wasn’t helping, it was making things worse. He didn’t think he wanted her to find out he was a Ligi. She’d seemed hesitant about him when he was still just a young Lord, and while he was pretty sure she’d worked past that after their hunting trip… There were only a few people whose opinions mattered greatly to Kayin, he’d decided he could live with the rest of the world hating him so long as his mother, his brothers, and his best friend didn’t abandon him. But she… was… different. Sort of special, and he didn’t want her to hate him either.
Oh, if only Jabari were here to help him! His brother would have known what to do or say in a situation like this! Well, actually, his brother would have known better than to wind up like this. Jabby knew what he was doing, Kayin was just sort of… muddling along.
”This tangent is hardly relevant,” he pointed out, though his tail flicked uncomfortably. He didn’t want her to know… it was wrong to lie… but he didn’t have to lie if she didn’t ask, right? Right? ”Do you want my help? Or do you not?” Kayin asked, hoping that his tone sounded more cold than it probably did. ”If I stay with you, the others will leave you alone. You won’t need to worry about losing your prey. And if I go…well, you never know.” Hopefully that sounded more like a threat. Ligi’s made threats, not that Kay had any intention of following up on it. He certainly wasn’t going to cause the hunter to lose his prey, not when he knew first-paw how many of the other families dearly needed such things.

A huge sense of relieve came over Kafei, so much so that it revealed itself in an audible sigh.
Kay didn't attack him for talking out of line, or was even that aggravated by his statement. Instead, there almost seemed to be a sense of uncertainty showing in those sky blue eyes. Perhaps he wasn't being deceptive about being a Ligi after all; maybe the reason he hid rank was because he was afraid, or even ashamed by it.
Was it possible there were Ligi without loyalty to Shane? If Kay was one of them, why had he accepted the position in the first place? Perhaps there were politics at play; he was one of Indira's sons after all.
It was killing him not to keep digging for information out of the young lion. He could only speculate what he's had to go through; realizing that the life he was leading might not be what Kay wanted for himself, or even who he really was, Kafei couldn't continue attempting to interrogate him. Was it possible that it could all be an intricate trick? Maybe, but body langue was hard to fake.
"I'm sorry for the way I acted, thank you for offering to help." Hopefully his change in tone wouldn't take Kay by surprise. Kafei bowed his head in subornation, in case a less forgiving Ligi really was lurking about, but also hoped the younger lion realized that it was a genuine apology. "I'm pretty well rested now, so we should move quickly between the two of us."
This kid wasn't a Ligi. Maybe by title, but nothing more was indicating to him that Kay was really his enemy.
