( journal post ;; ʀϵғʟϵϲтɪɵɴ )

I'm not so lonely right now.

( mood : hopeful ) ( currently : staring at a pokeball ) ( eating : nothing )

Kieran poked listlessly at the pokeball in his lap.

A premier ball, he'd been told. Whatever that meant. The thing was small and round and it seemed sentient enough, because whenever he would poke it or set it down it would begin to roll into the wall. Just that action, over and over, as if it gained some sort of satisfaction from banging into things. If he lifted it up and held it in his palm, the ball would still and be content (or perhaps too frightened to move - it was hard to tell with a pokeball).

He'd found it while he was wandering. The object didn't run from him and it didn't speak, so he'd felt that he had found the perfect companion. Just something he could hold and have and talk to without the fear of being judged. It was a bit sad, he supposed, to think of a supposedly inanimate object that way, but sometimes when he gazed down at it, he felt that something might be inside. When you opened things, generally there was something inside, right? But he didn't get his hopes up.

Legs crossed on the floor, Kieran gently rolled the pokeball from his palm to the floor and watched it. It sat still for a few beats, as it always did, and then it began to roll toward whatever direction it must have thought the wall was. He sighed and glanced skyward.

"Stop it," he whispered urgently to the ball, and crawled on all-fours toward it to retrieve the thing. When it was in his hand again, it was fine. It stopped moving. Perhaps it sensed that it had nowhere to go, or maybe it was just comfortable. Regardless, he was happy as long as the ball was happy.

Once again possessing the ball, Kieran felt a little more at ease, too. He was comfortable when he could hold it and prevent it from hurting itself. The thing had some sort of homing device for any obstacle in its path, zeroing in on it every. Time.

What was he supposed to do? The Duskull sighed.

"Just you and me," he sighed, gently poking the ball with his index finger. It didn't move.

With the grace of a sack of potatoes, Kieran fell to his side, cradling the ball very carefully against his chest. The rest of his day was spent staring at the wall that the pokeball loved to ram into so much.

It wasn't empty.

It wasn't empty. It wasn't empty. It wasn't --

His head whipped to the side and Kieran stared out the window. His hands curled into tight fists at his sides and then relaxed, and he repeated the motion several times before giving up. It hadn't been empty. Something was inside. Not just something, he thought with an inward sigh. No, something more than something.

A child.

A quiet, pixel-faced child.

He sighed again, this time exhaling loudly and surprising himself. He looked around and saw the boy sound asleep on his bed, as he had left him. He didn't like to let him out of his sight. He didn't like the idea of it. The boy --

Gideon. He had named him Gideon. Which was a mistake, when he thought about it; when you named something, you grew attached to it. But that wasn't entirely true. He had been attached to Gideon long before he had known Gideon even existed. He had been attached to the pokeball more than anything else in his life, so he felt a little betrayed when he woke up to find a child and not a pokeball lying on his chest.

It was a rude awakening, to say the least. He had spent the day trying to figure out what to do with Gideon, and they had gotten to know each other to some extent. To some extent meaning they had gotten a good look at each other (not so much on Kieran's part, though; again, he felt a little cheated), and spoken a few brief words. Already Kieran could feel a protective instinct toward the child. When others so much as looked at him he wanted to envelope the other in his cloak and hide him from the world.

That world of dirty people.

Hands grasped at his cloak, and he tugged it up to his chin, his reflection staring lucidly at him. Sometimes it felt so real; sometimes, it had felt so real that he hadn't felt lonely before. Now he knew it was only a reflection. Now... he had something else to focus his attention on.

He flicked absently at his bangs and craned his neck to stare at Gideon. Staring made him uncomfortable, personally, but he thought it would be alright if Gideon was asleep. Although it was hard to tell, with that face.

He sighed for the hundredth time and resumed his watch out his window.

He'd already decided. He'd decided the moment his hands had touched that pokeball. He would protect it from this world - by whatever means necessary.
