"I've never tried singing," Roque confessed. "And I... won't, now, just to spare your ears." And a little bit of his ego, no doubt. No telling whether he'd be any good at it, but without practice, he'd bet not. "My mother sings sometimes. She sang to us when we were small, but I hardly remember the words, much less how to make the right notes."
He chuckled warmly. "Good, good. I'm not fond of having ringing ears." And he was enjoying both the day and the company. No use ruining either.

Mani giggled again and it seemed she'd done that often today around her new friend. Well that was a good thing after being with the same faces every day. You tended to get sour and snappy. It was good to laugh.
"I won't sing if you don't!" She teased him and smiled.
"So what do you like to do...I mean aside from sneaking away for alone time!"

Roque laughed and nodded. "It's a deal. No bursting into song, no aching ears." He was sure her singing couldn't be as bad as she said, but if she didn't want to sing, he wouldn't pressure her.
He thought about the question, head tilted thoughtfully as if that might make an answer come more quickly to mind. "Well. I'm fond of getting out in the sunshine. That's pretty obvious, I think. I like to walk at night when it's cool, though. We're a night-time bunch," as vampires were wont to be, "so most afternoons I'm dozing. By the time the sun goes down, I'm ready to go and see what's changed. Oh, and there's nothing better than a late night flight when the moon's full and everything beneath's gone quiet." He actually sighed at the idea, a little smile tugging at his lips.

"That sounds like so much fun." Mani's face took on a wistful cast to it as she added, "I wish I could fly. It looks wonderful." She sighed and shook her head, "No use complaining about things though right? I'm happy with my lot in life, I just wish I had a little more freedom."

In hindsight, maybe it wasn't the best idea to bring up flying, since she didn't have wings. He tried to be mindful about that, since so many soquili seemed to wish for flight and would never have it. Still, she'd asked and he'd answered honestly.
And wishes for freedom were things that could one day come true. "You'll have it, one day, if you really want it. Your family would understand if you wanted time and space, wouldn't they? When you have a family of your own, at least. You'd have family close and still have space for yourself."

Mani sighed softly, "I think it might be a very long time in coming. A family of my own I mean. My father and uncle are extremely protective of me and most stallions are intimidated by a mare that has been taught the knightly arts. I suppose a lot of them want a mare that needs them to protect them. My family thought it best we learn how to defend ourselves and not depend too much on others. You can't always have others there to help you so, I'd rather not be completely helpless."

Most stallions, eh? Roque didn't laugh, to his credit, though he did smile, and he was amused. "You haven't met protective until you've met my father. My mother didn't know anything about my father's kind of life when she came here, and yet..." His wings lifted in a sort of shrug.
"You're right, though," he went on, nodding. "You can't always trust that there'll be someone there to protect you. It's good to be able to take care of yourself, if it comes to that. It's... not a bad thing to have someone to lean on now and then, though. Having one doesn't mean you can't have the other."

The trollish mare gave her companion a small smile, "What you say is true, but when you lack a companion or someone willing to be that companion it doesn't really matter much." She swished her tail and gathered her thoughts, "What about you though? Surely there is a mare that is lucky enough to be your companion?"

Roque shook his head, still amused and chuckling quietly. "There's not," he confessed. "I think I could stay in the caves with my family until I'm old and they'd never look sideways or say a thing about me not having someone of my own. They'd be happy to have me. I." He paused again. "I'd rather not be that sort of alone."

Mani's face took on a far off look as she murmured, "I don't want to be that kind of alone either. It...sounds horrible. I want to find what mother and father have... That love, that's an eternal sort of love." Realizing she'd been daydreaming and with a stallion she'd barely knew listening to her, Nek'mani blushed furiously.
"I...oh my... I...I didn't mean for you to hear that. It...it wasn't directed to you. Not that there's anything wrong with you! You're very handsome!" She blushed harder and closed her eyes, thinking to herself 'Please let the earth swallow me now!'

Roque watched her backpedal, amused but not laughing. He wouldn't want her to take that the wrong way. And, he knew how she felt. He'd said embarrassing things at the wrong time before. So, he waited patiently, thinking she'd probably babble herself out, soon.
When she started apologizing, though, he shook his head and smiled gently. "Promise, I've had worse rambles. I won't hold you to that one, or even hold it against you." He stepped sideways and shoulder bumped her very lightly. "It's all right.

Nek'mani stopped rambling when Roque promised not to hold it against her. She sighed in relief even as she blushed. It was good that he was so understanding. She giggled as he shoulder bumped her and gently bumped him back. "Thank you for understanding Roque."

Still smiling, he nodded. "I've had worse rambles," he repeated, "and heard weirder things, too, I promise. Just wait until you meet some of my family."
Er. Not that she'd asked to meet them. Now he was the one wondering if he'd said too much. He was enjoying her company. He liked her earnestness, but there was no need to go rushing into anything. Or make her think he was trying to rush.
He flicked his ear, ducked his head a little, and cleared his throat. "Thank you, by the way. For the compliment. You're". Yep. Now he was in dangerous territory. "You're very pretty, yourself."

Mani chuckled and smiled at Roque. "I'd like to meet them. It's always fun to meet your friends family. Well, so long as they aren't like my father and uncle, both of them are supremely overprotective of my sister and I. When they found out my older sister had a mate....I think Daddy nearly flipped his lid."
The trollish mare shook her head and blushed once again as her companion complimented her in return. "Thank you very much. I think you're the first stallion to ever call me pretty." She gave him a shy smile in thanks.
"What would you like to do now? I'm a bit hungry so, maybe we could look for a snack then continue our conversation? I'm up for anything really."
