Akira Kurosawa is a post-WWII film director from Japan, who directed many wonderful films, a few of which you might have heard of, such as Seven Samurai or Rashomon. Many of his films critique social situations and the government, which had strict censorship laws immediately after WWII, and which he got around by making his films appear to be about honour.
