She took the twitches as what they were, and allowed herself a mental pat on the back for amusing him. However, when he didn't respond, she wondered if she was wrong about his wanting to converse. Maybe he was like Pachu'a after all. Or maybe, like her, he just wasn't used to small talk.
What did one say to a virtual stranger to start a conversation? She noticed his gaze toward the ravine and followed it before wincing. "Ew... Yeah, that wouldn't have been a fun ride, I'm sure."

He winced in turn, at the mention of the ravine. Shaking his head, Betula agreed with Lian, but again, words seemed to escape him. Had he been a different type of soquili, he may have found such an instance awkward, uncomfortable, but Betula was nothing of the sort.
He was calm and collected, if a little apprehensive at the ravine below, but everything about his body language implied that he was completely comfortable. His ears weren't focused, his muscles were relaxed, and his tail only flicked lazily, as if it had a chance of shooing away flies. He had afterall, succeeded in somewhat of a conversation with this new soquili, and that was more than he could say for many other of his meetings. Usually, conversations could go quite one-sided with Betula. But he at least tried to be better at it, with the right soquili.

She translated the wince as a confirmation of what she had said, and took his relaxed state to mean that he was feeling better. Doubtlessly, the scare of what had almost happened was passing, which was a good thing. She contemplated standing and moving, but the very thought sent her muscles into a fit of complaints. Maybe not just yet.
The Angeni gave up on the concept of small talk. Either she just wasn't any good at it, or he wasn't the type of Soquili who enjoyed such a thing. Neither bothered her much, as she rested her head on the ground and let the quiet surround them for a moment.

The quiet was definitely welcomed, though more chatter definitely wouldn't have been pushed away. Admittedly it probably wouldn't have gotten much of a response, but words didn't always need to fill the silence. Silence sometimes spoke so much more than words could express. But he wondered how many others had discovered just that. Probably not many, he would think. Afterall, if many new about that serene balance, there wouldn't be as much of a competition for attention and conversation.
He glanced over at the Angeni to see her rested her head on the ground, no doubt tired from the exertion of saving his skin. She seemed to understand the pleasantness of silence, and she seemed alright with it. He liked that. He hoped that this would not be the last time he met this Angeni, as he could see her becoming a friend. And he didn't have any of those. There was of course the mare he was beginning to travel with, but that wasn't the same. He would like to have a friend, but how could he suggest something like that without seeming needy? She'd already done so much for him!

She noticed him watching her with an odd look on his face. She lifted her head curiously. Lian had seen that expression before, on her uncle's face whenever he was trying to figure out how not to say something. It didn't happen often, but she usually knew how to interpret his nonverbal cues. This ceryni was a stranger, though. She didn't know how to read him quite so well, which was a shame. She wouldn't have minded getting to know him better, if he was willing.
"Something on your mind?" she prompted, hoping he wouldn't be offended by her question.

The mare perked up, but he didn't consciously realise it until she spoke, too. His head jerked, as if snapping him out of a deep sleep or trance of some sort. A faint smile and a touch of pink came over his cheeks as he tried to stumble for an answer. "Umm... no. I... I mean.... Hmph." He snorted, upset with his lack of words for the answer.
A few more moments of silence while he tried to comb over his words, resulted in a question of his own. Cautious, but calm, "It's hard to find someone that doesn't judge." A small pause, and then, "A friend that is willing to listen, even if that means silence."
There. Did that bring his message across? Was he doing this right? Would she even care? He didn't know, but that was what he put out there in the hopes of gaining a friend.

She titled her head, weighing his words carefully. Another lesson learned from her uncle. She zeroed in on the second part and guessed that she had just made a friend. The knowledge pleased her, and she found herself smiling warmly. Still, her curiosity perked up at the rest of what he had said.
"Is it really so strange?" she asked, curiously.

She smiled warmly, and that on it's own calmed his heartrate a little and warmed his insides up a touch. It was a strange feeling, but a calm one. He tried a smile of his own, though how far it really got, he couldn't say.
A response took a moment for him to come up with, but he eventually replied honestly, "Not many accept those that have taken up a life of secrecy and quiet. But everyone has their secrets, and everyone needs someone to help them keep those secrets."
Sad eyes, almost dead in their purple tone, spoke of many years past those logged on his body. But they were calm. He had accepted this, and he merely sought a friend of his own.
"It is nice to have a friend." He smiled warmly in return, but it was rather clear that there was nothing else he felt needed to be said. He remained where he was and would not argue her leaving, or staying to rest a while longer. He wasn't about to go anywhere, but he was comfortable knowing that there was someone out there that he could seek out and talk to if he needed to.

She smiled her understanding and nudged him affectionately. "I understand the desire for silence, and for a friend. I'm glad to be a friend for you." She almost reminded him that he could seek her out if he wanted or needed to, but didn't. After all, it was a given, and she had learned at a very young age that one did not voice the obvious. It was a waste of time and breath.
For a moment, Lian rested, content with the comfortable silence. Then she stretched her wings as her wanderlust started to take hold again. "Unless you would prefer me to stay a bit longer, I'm going to continue on my way. Though I would like to come by here and see you again for a visit, if that would be alright?"

His stubby tail flicked a few times contently, and he offered a bow of the head as his thanks for her friendship. It really did mean a lot to him, to the wandering loner who kept knowledge for others. He was just happy that someone had finally understood him, probably because she had known someone else that lived a life of silence.
His eyes followed the angeni as she stretched her wings and in general, moved. She seemed to be itching to move on again. He would not keep her here, but he would definitely be happy to have her visit again. Only time would tell he supposed.
"I would be honored if you came back to visit me, Lian. Anytime you like."

She smiled at him, pleased. "Then I shall make certain I do. I don't like goodbyes, so I won't say it. Instead, I will say, until we meet again," she decided.
