-Scene: The Ballroom Party-

Nathanial slowly stood up, brushing the contents out of his hair, his face burning with fury. Never had his pride ever been so crushed before. He didn’t understand why Evee didn’t fawn over him like the other girls did. In fact, she never seemed to throw a glance or show the slightest interest upon any other boy in the whole city. She seemed to always wander off eventually, reasons or whereabouts unknown. Once he followed her, only to watch her prance off into the gardens, climb trees and stare off into the bleak and boring city. What exactly was it about the slums and peasants that interest her so much? He was stupefied by the answer.

This incident made him so angry. Oh so angry. What’s there not to like? He just had to find out. Doesn’t the worthy man always get the girl?

Nathanial thought of himself as a statue; his prominent cheekbones, strongly defined jaw, and cleft chin would make any sculptor extremely proud to show off his masterpiece. His enormously muscular build was no less fascinating compared to his face. He had a massively hard rock chest and biceps the size of boulders. The blond hair, striking blue eyes, the charming smile; he had everything!

It seemed as though the world revolved around him. He was the most strongest, most admired, most handsome boy in town. And he had only just turned nineteen. Girls adored him and men envied him. The whole town was in awe of his good looks and combative abilities. Whenever he wanted something, he got it right away. There were no "maybe's" and definitely no "no's." especially when it came to women. With his perfectly aligned pearly whites and eyes that sparkled like Sapphires, young girls and even older women were instantly mesmerized and at times even fainted by a mere glance or a flash of a smile.

Everything was perfect, up until now. Never before had he been rejected; especially in such a abrupt and humiliating way. He gritted his teeth, the sore building up and burning his ego by just thinking about it. Nathanial stood up, purposely knocking the bewildered chef to the ground as he did. He growled angrily, grabbing a handful of icing off of his head and throwing it to the ground.

He was fuming so much, he didn’t even notice his younger brother approach him until the brat had opened his mouth and uttered words that only agitated Nathanial even further. Nathanial clenched his fists, wanting to punch his brother in the face, but he knew everyone was watching and that would only further dampen his reputation for the night. With an enraged cry and bloodshot eyes, he made a threatening motion to his brother throwing his face up to him so close their nose nearly touched while stamping his feet before storming out of the ballroom.

Evee's heart stopped. The once happy and carefree expression fading into pained and hurtful one . Thinking she heard wrong, she opened her mouth to question him, only to watch him turn and walk away. As Max proceeded on, further and further away, Evee called out his name loudly into the night sky. She no longer cared whether her father, or anyone for that matter, could hear her. Seeing no response, Evee did what she felt was right. Jumping from the window sill, she took on after him into the streets. As she reached him, she threw her arms around his back squeezing him tight, "Max" She whimpered, allowing her tears to flow into his shirt the same way they did the first time they met. For moments that seemed like forever, Evee stood there clinging him from behind tightly, afraid that she would lose him forever.

=====

Nathanial listened to the howling laughter from behind him as the doors slammed behind him. His pace quickened but didn't quite hit a run. It was more like a fast-walk of shame. Suddenly a voice reached his ears, causing him to stop. Wait, was that Evee's voice? He stopped short in his tracks and listened carefully as the same familiar voice called out once more. Max? Who the hell was Max? It was definitely Evee's voice. He could recognize it anywhere.

Jumping to his feet, he ran forward towards her voice. It sounded like it was coming from her room. He just had to investigate this. Making his way around the huge mansion, he had just ducked behind a bush in time to see Evee run out from behind a hole in the wall with a tear streamed face. His eyes followed her and watched in spite as she threw herself on a boy he had never seen before. The jealous rage grew inside of him, brewing larger and larger. Soon, once he could no longer contain his fury, he jumped forward and pulled Evee off of the boy, throwing a fist his rival with full blunt force in a loud shout of pure rage. "So you're the one that caused all of this! Think you could steal my spotlight and make Evee cry huh? You're a pathetic son of a b***h!" He yelled angrily, throwing fist after fist at the boy with no mercy. As he fell to the ground, Nathanial quickly kneed him in the chest, before letting him fall to the ground to continue throwing out more punches, not letting one jab falter in brute strength. Blood speckled the ground and he grinned, but his satisfaction was not going to be over until the boy was dead.

======

Evee took in a short but quick breath of surprise as hard hands pulled her off of Max, throwing her to the side. She stumbled and nearly fell, but managed to catch her balance just in time to see Nathanial running forward and punching Max square in the neck. "Nathan No!" She screamed in horror, launching herself onto Nathan, hoping to tear him off of Max. His arm lurched out and pushed her onto the hard concrete floor. She felt something in her ankle pop and a seering pain rushed up her leg causing her to wince once more. Nathanial didn't seem to notice; he was far too busy in his pent up rage at that point. Evee continued to scream; this time for help hoping that someone would come to Max's aid, watching helplessly as blood trickled down Max's face and splattered all over the ground. "Somebody! Please help him!"

Max walked away, despite Evee calling after him. He made it to the street, then felt the familiar arms wrap around him. He heard Evee crying and felt the tears soaking into his shirt. He sighed, he wanted this, deep down, he wanted Evee to chase after him but, he knew that it couldn't work. "Evee... I'm so, so sorry... but... I can't be here with you... It's not you... it was never you, you're perfect... And I don't deserve you." Max barely finished his sentence when he felt Evee being pulled off of him and felt a hard punch hit him from behind. It was 'Pretty Boy', Max wanted to fight back, but he knew the consequences would be undeniably bad. Max took punch after punch, hit after hit, from the man. When he was knocked to the ground, Max managed to spit out, between hits, "Spotlight? Ha... Evee thinks less of you than she does a dead rotting fish..." It was then that Max heard Evee scream and try to pull Nathan off of him. Failing to do so, she was pushed back, and apparently injuring her leg. Max took another hit and tried to move past Nathan and get to Evee. He was hit again and he spit out blood from his mouth. He knew he was in trouble, blood was running down his face, he felt one of his ribs crack, and Nathan wasn't going to stop until he was dead. Spitting more blood from his mouth, Max said weakly, "Evee! Get help... he's going to kill me..." Max's vision began to blur, and saw blood running into his eyes. He made a futile reach for Evee, who was ten feet away, before everything went black and he passed out.

Ron was loving this entertainment. Boring stuffy old men just talking or busting his brother for looking like fool. The value of one clearly out weighed the other for Ron. So he decided to follow his brother out so that he could poke the beast with a stick for more fun. Now, where did my dear brother get off to? he wondered as he walked out side. That was when Ron heard shouting coming from somewhere on the manor. What's all the fuss about on a Mayor's estate? Scandal in the high society? Ron briskly walked over to where the source of the noise was coming from and found Nate beating in the face of a peasant. He watched in dumb struck confusion as Evee was knocked to the ground and appeared to hurt her foot. As the peasant begged for help Ron became angry. "Nathanial! How dare you beat a peasant like a slave. You bring dishonor to our family name! Look at what you have done to Evee and how shall the mayor react?"

Nathanial didn't stop when he first heard the voice of his annoying little brother. He managed to get another punch or two, until Ron had mentioned Evee when he stopped. Spinning around, he turned to look at the distressed Evee, sprawled out on the floor. He hadn't meant to hurt her; he was in such a rage that he hadn't realized he pushed her to the ground.

"Evee! I'm so sorry about your-" He started, jumping down to her aid when a loud crack filled the air. His left cheek burned like fire, causing him to stare blankly at her, not comprehending what had just happened.

"Don't touch me you monster!" She half-shrieked, half-sobbed at him, turning her tear-filled eyes of hatred away from him.

Nathanial lifted his left hand and placed his hand over his stinging cheek in pure shock with widened eyes. He was speechless, not knowing what to do or say next. He suddenly felt a drop of water rolling down on his face. Then two, then three drops of rain. Within a minute or two, it started to pour. The rain didn't seem to phase him too much; he was still too shocked to care. Monster? No one had ever called him a monster before, let alone slap him. If anything, I'm anything BUT a monster. I'm so perfect and monsters are supposed to be so....imperfect! He didn't quite understand. At the same time, he felt ashamed. He didn't know why.

He watched painfully as Evee crawled over to Max, cradling his lifeless body in her arms. Nathanial could feel the jealousy boiling up all over again. Over the years he would have given anything to have Evee look at him the way she did with that peasant. He didn't understand; he was more good-looking, more stronger than that boy would ever be. What does he have that I don't?? He clenched his fists into the ground, wanting to punch the boy all over again.

Evee leaned over Max's shoulder, her tears mixing in with the rain. She hugged him tight and sobbed harder than ever before. She felt like it was her fault that he was this way; she followed him out here to begin with. "I'm sorry Max..." She whispered, wishing that he could hear her. It pained her seeing him like this; in fact, she closed her eyes so that she wouldn't have to see him so bloodied up like so. She felt relieved that Max was still breathing and that she could still feel his heartbeat. She was grateful to the fact that Ron had managed to find them and interfere in time, even though she wished he had come a little bit earlier.

"What is the meaning of this?!"

Evee's heart dropped when she heard her father's voice booming out into the air. "Father! No! I can explain-it's just-"

He ignored her as the soldiers pulled Evee off of Max. "Who is this boy?" He spat, "What happened to your ankle?" He demanded ferociously.

"Uh sir. This is Castillo's son. They are the weapons smiths from downtown. He is enlisted to fight in the war tomorrow." A man answered.

" Grrr...I don't believe it! It's the brat from before! Why is it that every time I catch him fraternizing with my daughter, she is always hurt!" He growled angrily."Take him away! Keep as planned, but put him and his squad on the front lines of the war tomorrow. He'll be the first to fight and the first to die."

"NO! Father no!!" Evee screamed in protest, struggling as the soldiers pulled her away.

"It's whats good for him and what's good for you." He said gruffly, "And you young lady!" He raised his voice, "are to report back to your room immediately where you are supposed to be". Nathanial said nothing as he watched they separated Evee and Max until the Mayor addressed him. "Ah Nathanial. I suppose you came to my daughter's aid?" Nathanial nodded in response and slyly answered, "Yes sir." The mayor beamed at him and patted his back, "Now here's a noble man" He chuckled, "Promote him at once!" He commanded. "You have shown great potential in the past and I have to say, I've always had my eyes on you from the start. You will make a fine captain one day." Nathanial felt a smile creep up his face for the first time that night."And you." The mayor turned to Ron. He couldn't remember the boy's name, nor did he recognize the fact he was Nathanial's brother. "You...Report back to whatever you were doing...." He said shrugging idly before walking off.

Nathanial beamed, strolling over to his brother. It was his turn to rub in the taunts, "Never matching up to me eh little brother? I'll always be more handsome, more talented, more recognized than you ever will be" He chuckled, leaning his elbow on his brother's shoulder. Nathanial patted his own chest twice with a fist and a laugh before strolling off.

This was why Ron detested his brother. The beast hiding within the noble. There were so many of them that it made Ron sick, the Mayor was just like Nate and that was the worst part. It had nothing to do with the recognition, the glory, or the girls, it was simply that they were hiding themselves behind a mask. A mask that Ron just wanted to rip from their faces. "I would never want to match you Nathanial. Unlike the stupid swooning girls I can see the blackness that stains your very being and if you don't want others to find out about it you're going to help me." Ron told him.

He smiled knowing that Nate could never match his wit, perhaps the one thing that Ron truly held over his brother. "If you can convince dad to sign the papers allowing me to join up with the army can sleep soundly knowing that I won't tell anyone about the real you."

Nathanial gritted his teeth at the comment, but did nothing else to show his contempt for his brother. "Fine, I'll convince father. Not that I care that you would rather spend your time on a battlefield with other gay men than a living the life with an armful of feminine beauties," he shrugged, "More for me."

Pounding his brother's back harshly to show his 'affection', he took off hoping to get the last word of the conversation and headed home to wash off the matted cake mess from earlier.

===Insert time skip 3 hours===

Evee lay in her bed upset more than ever. By this time, she had no more tears left to shed and her eyes were red and puffy with distress. She could no longer stand living the life that she did and she knew that she could not bear to live with the news of Max being injured, or worse killed, on the battlefield.

Evee sat up and slowly got off of her bedside, limping slightly to the bathroom. Luckily the doctor had said that she had only sprained her ankle, pulled a muscle or two and managed to strained her bone structure. He had said that she would still be able to walk and it will take a few weeks to heal. Her father had ordered that she stay in her room until her wounds are completely healed but she scoffed at the idea. Evee made her way to the mirror and stared at her reflection. Evee sighed, she looked like a mess. Pulling her hair back and dabbing her face with water, an idea slowly started to formulate in her mind.

Grabbing a hair tie, she rolled her hair into a bun, keeping her hair back. With a fine pencil-liner, she darkened and thickened the appearance of her eyebrows. Running to her wardrobe, she pulled out the most dull looking and drab garment she could find that was hidden behind layers and layers of clothing; a long brown coat that she had Max had loaned to her not so long ago. Pulling it over herself, she lowered the hood and climbed out the windowsill once more. This time however, she didn't plan on coming back.

That evening Magnus found himself in his fathers study standing at full attention still in his guard outfit he had been wearing that evening. the large man sat at his desk going though his own paper work while he left his son to stand at attention. Trinkets and clocks all about the room made noises that just about drove Magnus insane as he listened.

He counted the minutes as they passed until finally his father rearranged his papers and stood. Walking up to his son Magnus' father was sligthly surprised that he stoood eye to eye with his only son, but he didn't let it show.

"I am sending you to a Guard school out of the country" he said neither man looking each other in the eyes. "you are to report at the school thursday at noon" he finnished, pleased that this would be proper punishment for the boys behavior at the party as well as break down the young mans attitude.

A chuckle came from Magnus and his father turned to see him grinning "you old goat" he said looking up at the baster who fathered him. "you have no contol over where i go any more, they have promoted me to captian sir and i am to leave for the war tomorrow" he said pleased at seeing the man's face turn red.

"You dare defy me!?" his father said reaching for Magnus' throat. usually a man in his postition would be proud of a son promoted to captian and laying his life on the line for his country, but he had always hated his son. The boy's cocky additude and some other unidentified feeling that had caused him to alienate the young man when he had been barely a small boy.

His lunge was cut off though as a decorative saber was thrusted though his gut. Staring wide eyed he watched as Magnus yanked the blade out if his stomach and watched the old man collapse. ripping off a peice of his fathers shirt as he fell. "Honestly you have been a real pain all these years" he said as he used the cloth to whipe the blood off his blade.

"I'm not sure how i endured your attitude for so long, thankfully you are no longer needed from this point on and now i have the liberty to get rid of you" he said taking out a pistol from his pocket he aimed it at his fathers head. "ta ta dear Father, it was nice knowing you" he smiled and pulled the trigger.

Max awoke with a start, to find that he was locked in a cell. He had no idea where he was or what had happened after he passed out. Looking around, he saw that he wasn't alone in his cell. "Who... Who are you? Where are we? What the hell happened to me?" The figure that was in the cell with him stood and walked over to the window, putting his face against the bars. Moonlight shone through the window and onto the man's face, the man was smiling. Max was dumbfounded, the two of them were locked in a cell, presumably prisoners of some sort, and Max had no idea what had happened to Evee. Max stood up, and felt a sharp pain in his chest; Nathan had broken two of his ribs. He clutched at his chest before sitting back down on the bed, he felt bandages under his shirt; at least they were kind enough to give him that much. He looked at the man, still smiling and pressing his face to the moonlit bars.

He was about to ask his questions again when the man spoke,
"I'm hurt you don't remember me Max... has it really been all that long since you saw me?" Max listened for a moment then he recognized the voice, "Cayden!? What the hell are you doing in here!? I haven't seen you in months! What happened?" Cayden smiled even wider at the fact that his best friend finally recognized him. He turned and sat down next to Max and began to describe the events that caused Cayden to be thrown in jail. Apparently Cayden had intervened when a couple of the guards were beating a slave for no apparent reason. Cayden had stepped in and defended the slave, but since attacking the guards was a high offense, they tossed him in jail and kept him there. Now they were going to send him and Max to the front lines the next day.

As Max listened to Cayden's story, his mind drifted away from where he was and thought back to the incident. He thought about how Evee chased him and because of that... No, he didn't blame Evee for it, it was his fault. He had let their relationship evolve into something it couldn't have been. He wondered what had happened to Evee after he passed out. Cayden snapped him out of is thoughts with a slap on the back, he didn't know Max had two busted ribs. After a while of talking, Max decided to get some rest. He'd need it if he was going to war the next day.

((If everyone's done, we can skip to the next day.))

Magnus finnished whiping his fathers blade as two of the house servants rushed in having heard the gun shot. They carried their own guns on them and when they saw the master motion less on the floor they drew their guns to point them at the young master.

Magnus wasted no time in slitting the throat of the nearest man as he fumbled for his weapon, there was the distinct sound of laughter in the back of his mind as the mans blood splattered onto his face.

Two shots rang out as the man fell choking on his own blood. there was also the distinct crash of a glass item breaking and suddenly the whole room went up in flames, smiling he turned to the other Servant who had just stared paralyzed by the sight of the slaughter, unfortunately for him he could not be spared by this point and within a few moments the man was lying dead next to his father.

He tossed the decorative blade covered in the servants blood on the ground next to his father, with a smile at the three bodies he exited the room and quickly ran up the stairs. "Mother!" he shouted a sense of urgancy in his voice, it shook with excitement that could easily be mistaken for terror if any one heard. "There is a fire! Mother!" he shouted so the entire house hold could hear and rushed to the bed room where he knew his mother would be "Hurry we have to evacuate! the house is on fire" he said to her. she was still dressed in her evening gown she had worn in to the party.

Smoke was starting to fill the house and he hurriedly grabbed her hand and pulled her out the back entrance where several of the servants and hands waited. "get water, we need to douse that fire!" he said as they scrambled for the buckets.

Although seeming frantic inside Magnus was chuckling. things were going to run so smoothly from here on out, he couldn't help but grin as he watched the flames engulf his old home.

Evee ran through the cold bitter air clutching the coat tightly. It still smelled like Max and it somewhat comforted the growing fear that was building deep inside her mind. This was the first time she had actually gathered up the courage to run away from home. It was terrifying yet she was determined to get away if it meant saving Max and being with him. She couldn't bear to let him die in war or be cast away from her by her father. He was her best friend; the only person she could ever relate to. She didn't know where she was going, the streets were like a maze. How she wished that Max were here to teach her how to navigate the city, he probably knew it like the back of his hand. She didn't know how far she ran into the dark night that was lit by the streetlights and houses. She thought of all the families all cozied up and huddled together by the fire, how cold it were; she could be too, if only circumstances hadn't happened and that they weren't forced apart so abruptly.

Evangelina pushed the thoughts away and focused on her running. She didn't even know if she'd be caught and dragged home or get lost and never find Max nor her way home again. The streets were dark and cold, something she had never experienced before and running on the paved streets all alone terrified her.

Suddenly a black figure zoomed right past her, making her scream slightly and jump back with her heart making a sudden lurch. It took her a few excruciating moments to realize that it was only a cat. She slowed down to a walk and shivered as a growl erupted from her stomach; the coat helped but she should have brought more layers of clothing and maybe some food. This was all badly planned because she didn't know where she was going either. Suddenly a stream of voices caught her attention.

"I'm going to miss you dear son..."

"I will be okay ma. I will come back alive and well and will make you proud"

She turned to see a mother grieving in her son's arms. Soon they parted ways and Evangelina took this as an opportunity to follow him silently. Perhaps he will lead her to Max. With that she carefully and discreetly followed him a few blocks to the recruitment center.
