Sofiel was a ninja, if he wanted to stay hidden he could. It was part of the reason why he also never picked the overly obvious places. While Sonnet had been busy collecting food Sofiel had take the time to leave his scent upon several trees before flying as high into canopy as he could while still watching his student. It had been by sheer luck that he had come across an empty woodpecker nest, the front now simply a whole that looked like an owl or other such animal may use in the day. Perched inside with the darkness and the smell of Oak and dried leaves that had once made an elegant nest Sofiel watched and learnt.

Each of his students where different, each of them a challenge in their own way... but in many ways Sonnet was the opposite to what he had expected, when they had first met Sonnet had been rather shy, trying his best to aid the defence against the skinwalkers but slightly out of place. Yet here, in the forest he seemed much more at home -perhaps his nerves was simply the result of something else? Maion or Chandra prehaps? Sofiel had heard stories about how harsh Maion could be at times, and that his size intimidated a lot of soquili- but to Sofiel Maion was just large like any other soquili, but perhaps that was just because he had flutterblood in him, and most flutters were smaller than all the other breeds -often to their advantage.

The main problem Sonnet has was his pelt colour, it would never allow him to blend easily; that said if you where strong enough you didn't need to hide as much.

Sofiel's wings were still, sat on his back and silent as mice. However he was sure that if Sonnet listened enough, though he may have to move higher to hear it, he would probably be able to hear the laboured breaths of Sofiel. It was hard flying and maintaining such a small form for so long, praticed or not he too had a limit. He would simply use this test for Sonnet as a test for himself also.

Who would crack first?
Would the boy find him while he was still small?
Or would Sofiel be forced to change back?

Only time would tell.

Sonnet was still stood thinking, he had no idea what to look or smell for for that matter, he hadn't got a clue really what Sofiel smelt like, and had no idea he had been followed all this time so by his thinking he could be anywhere. "Start at the begining." The only place he knew Sofiel had been was in the clearing so he headed back there.

Sniffing around where the flutter had been standing he eventually picked up on the scent of him. Then he started sniffing around, not thinking he would get far, he had never tried to find someone before so had very little understanding of what to do. So he started wandering around where he had been when he was picking fruit and started sniffing. He felt somewhat ridiculous wandering around just sniffing especially as he was getting no where but after making a small circles round he thought he found something. Starting to follow the scent back to where he had stopped and thought things up and as it turned out back to where Sofiel was, not that he knew that yet, he did a bit more wandering round before finally stopping where the fruit trees were. "Hmmm..." His tone thoughtful, looking up again.

Sofiel watched and watched, he was tempted to follow the stallion and observe some more but decided it was best to simply stay hidden and allow him to be found in this game of hide-and-seek.

While he waited Sofiel allowed his thoughts to drift to Sachiko, how he wanted to be with her, to earn the right to be her lifemate and have her bear his children.... but he was considered a traitor, for not killing her. Sachiko had not been upset that he had not killed her of course- but it made their joining, difficult. What would he have to do? Would they be forced to run away like common criminals? That was the not the life Sofiel wanted for his mate, he wanted her to have peace, happiness, and joy... if they left they would be hunted down and killed as a traitors. No, Sofiel could not risk that. He would have to regain his rank, prove his worth with sweat and blood....

Sweat and blood....

The thought crossed his mind as his nose started to pick up the now familiar scent. Sonnet. He was close again.

Daring to peek a quick look from his hidy hole he found Sonnet circling the area, scenting the air -he was untrained in the technique of it, that was clear but Sofiel commended him for his effort. Then he paused and hesitated. Pulling back Sofiel waited, forcing his breath to come slow and steady. If this hadn't been a game, he would have made a bird call or another animal noise to distract his hunter long enough for him to escape.... but such tatics where not needed now.

Sonnet scrutinised the canopy and branches above him, frowning a little as he pondered. The flutter was small enough to hide like that but would he hide somewhere Sonnet couldn't go? Shaking his head as he looked back around him. Doubting it, his wings were just to big to navigate between trees so close together, so the flutter must be somewhere lower.

Going back to sniffing around again, his nose lower this time, though he wasn't getting anything that smelt like the flutter. Pondering what this could mean as he starts to wander in another circle looking for the scent. Not sure what to do when he found the flutter, though he was thinking that he was probably not going to find him at this rate. Sighing to himself as he kept looking. He might be feeling a bit defeatest but he wasn't giving up.

Sofiel stayed in his spot, disappointed that Sonnet had given up his current venture for another. He had been so close to finding Sofiel. Yes, Sofiel understood that he was high in the trees and it would likely be hard for the other stallion to fly but if he hadused his front legs on the tree he would have been high enough to spot the little hidden ninja and it would have been game over.

Yet, Sonnet diversion and rethinking gave Sofiel time to think. To think about what this thing between Sonnet and Maions daughter Chandra had. Would they become lifemates? Or was it more a teenage romance? In many ways the potential Sofiel saw within Sonnet made him the perfect candidate to mate the protectors daughter, Chandra was a spunky mare from what Sofiel had witnessed and Maion definatly had his hands full with her.... what Sofiel couldn't quite understand was how the spunky mare had found and brought the quiet stallion out of his shell? Interesting... perhaps opposites really did attract, of course, Sofiel didn't know too much about either soquili. Perhaps there was more to the situation than he realised.

Getting rid of his thoughts and focussing on the matter at hand he decided to give Sonnet a slight clue to his whereabouts by flying on the spot. His wings in flutterform made a distinctive 'buzz-e-d-buzz' noise as they flapped with enough speed to keep his little body airborne.

With any luck it would be the only clue Sonnet would need.

Sofiel went back to his observing.

Sonnet's head came up at the slight buzzing, turning in a full circle looking for bugs, though even as he did it his expression showed he felt foolish. This time of year there were no bugs it was too cold. Turning his head to where his ear had pointed, looking at the trees that were now in front of him. Looking thoughtful as he moved towards those trees. Did flutters buzz? Taking some more time to remember the moments that Sofiel had gone around his head... There had been a noise though Sonnet had not thought anything of it at the time.

Now he started focusing on these trees, there wasn't much left on the branches so that meant really low or inside. Looking round the roots he could find no sign of a tiny horse so he started scanning the trunks, eventually seeing a hole in one of them. Rearing he braced his knees on the trunk and stretched as far as he could to see if he could see anything inside it.

Sofiel watched and listened in silence, only his wings continued to give away his position -a tactical decision since he wanted to be found. He would need to teach Sonnet to uterlise his sence of spell, maybe he should place a blindfold on the boy and make him walk around using nothing more than his sence of smell and hearing to guide him? The more Sofiel considered the idea the more he liked it. He was sure Sonnet wouldn't like the suggestion, but would likely do it all the same.

As Sonnets nose inched closer and closer to Sofiel's spot he debated with himself for a moment if he should pretend not to be there.... but that would be cruel.

Flying out he circled Sonnet's head like he had earlier before flying into the forest. The change was almost sudden once he felt hidden enough, the pressure of staying so small for so long was evident, he had pushed himself to the limits of his shrunkeness, of course if he had been on the run he would have already ventured into one of his hidey holes, places that only a small flutter could enter but that had been dug and widened to accomidate his larger form deeper within. They had taken years to build and hide in the many forests he was forced to hide out in... of course, no one had come looking for him from his old herd in a long time.... yet Sofiel couldn't quite bring himself to relax that they would never come, because he knew, one day they would. He had taught them everything they knew.... would have taught them all his tricks had he not had to flee to save them from losing their current head. He was thankful he had not taught them everything, discovering new tricks now would have.... been difficult.

Entering the area Sonnet was waiting Sofiel nodded in welcome before standing before the larger but younger stallion. "Good... but could be better." His words weren't harsh just honest, and Sofiel knew the boy would understand and know what he could improve on.

Sitting down between two trees, his tail flopping from side to side lazily he said just two things. "Lets eat... tell me what you learnt." Being ability to identify your weaknesses and strengths, as well as what you learnt was half the battle.

Sonnet couldn't think of anything to say, Sofiel had appeared and said very little before settling down. So Sonnet just walked over and after a little wiggling to get his rough made basket from where it had settled over his shoulders, placed the basket of food in front of the flutter and settled down next to him. Thinking over what little the flutter had said, 'good but could be better' well that was some kind of praise at least though it didn't give him any ideas about what he had done well with.

Remaining quiet and thoughtful for a little while, not sure what he had learnt. The food gathering had been easy, as had making the basket, though usually he took more time over it, but he hadn't needed a big basket and it had served its purpose. But that had nothing to do with what he had learnt. His teeth worrying at his lip as he thought, actually a little worried that he had not learnt anything, but he must have...

Finally looking at Sofiel not sure if any of this counted but saying it anyway, after all worst case scenario he was a hopeless cause. "I learnt that flutters make a noise when small that you can listen for, I learnt I can smell more than just food with my nose, though it helps to know what the thing your looking for smells like...." Trailing off as he thinks, had there been anything else? He wasn't sure and the wings on his head drooped a little, the usually did when he was feeling bad, and now he felt bad because he was sure he had missed out on something.

Sofiel listened and nodded in reply to Sonnet, the boy had at least picked up on a few things although Sofiel was sure he had learnt a few other lessons... maybe they simply hadn't sunk in yet. He smiled, a rare action for him but it was genuine none the less as he reached down in silence to sample some of the delcious goods Sonnet had provided.

The juices trickled down his throat and still the silence stretched on. Sofiel was quiet comfortable in the silence, he spend most of his time in such a state -watching, waiting, scheme, training... it was hard to talk much when your profession called for silence. Assasins never did well if they announced their presences first.

"I think you learnt something else as well..... you learn that you can't always look where you expect, but prepare for the unexpected. I am assuming you have never seen a flutter shift before, and I am not even the smallest of my kind. Prepare for the unexpected. Prepare for every outcome. Then, and ONLY," he enthasied the word, "then will you truely be prepared." That was probably the most the elding stallion had spoken in a long time, but still he felt it was... needed. Sonnet may also be a stallion of few words but he could tell he didn't like feeling 'lost', and the only way Sofiel understood to rid such thoughts was to talk..... he just wasn't very good at it.

"Eat." He said, having taken his fill of the delicious food. If the stallion before him wanted to train to be stronger.. then Sofiel was about to give him the toughest work out of his life.

Sonnet had listened attentively, not sure why but he was surprised when the flutter said so much. Then he mentally kicked himself, he barely knew the flutter and had made an assumption, however accurate that had been it was wrong, and unfair. His eyes going to the fruit when Sofiel said about eating, he should eat, and he had been hungry, but now he felt the familiar lump of nerves in his stomach. He didn't know if this meant that the flutter was going to teach him, or if this was all that was to come.

Shaking his head finally. "I have never seen a flutter change before, I met a flutter girl once when I was a foal, but her wings were tiny and she couldn't fly with them.... I don't know if she could shrink or not." Though he suspected that she couldn't, after all she had asked him to take her flying when he was big and could fly... That made him think of her again, he had to find her sometime soon and take her for that promised flight, though he had no idea how to keep her on his back... He would have to ponder this.

Finally he started to eat, doing so slowly, other thoughts dwelling on his mind, his open face showing worry and nervousness. Wondering if the flutter ever relaxed, not sure he had it in himself to be alert every moment of the day and night. Besides he would no longer be himself if he was serious all the time, he might not be a laugh a minute but he did like to enjoy himself, especially with Chan, he liked having fun with Chan. A soft smile on his face as he thought about her, but then looking sad, his head wings drooping. What if he was no good at this, how could he protect Chan... Let alone everyone else he cared for....?

Sofiel observed in silence as he usually did, he noticed a an expersion that could likely only be described by one word... poundering, but the question was.... what was this stallion poundering? His words? His skills? What had just come to pass? Curious.

Then he saw an emotion he was familar with.... happiness that quickly turned to sadness, or worry. He worried constantly about Sachiko, even now he did.... he just had to 'distract' himself until he found a way to return to her side. Without truely thinking about it, something very out of character for Sofiel, he heard the words; "Who is she?" Before recognising that it has been he who had spoken. He had an suspicion it was Chandra, Maion's daughter and his old friend, that the boy poundered about... and for some reason Sofiel wasn't sure how he felt about that. A protective urge?

He shrugged off the feeling and took another mouthful of berries simply to prevent himself from speaking any more.

Sonnet went bright red with the flutters question. Was he so transparent? Was it so obvious what he was thinking? Resisting the urge to hide his head in shame he lifted it, though his head wings were flat to his head which gave away his true feelings. "Chandra..." The soft reverant way he said her name showed how deep he felt for her, they had been foalhood friends and had probably driven both their parents nuts with their adventures, but somewhere in all that fun and laughter as they grew she had become more special to him. His north star, the guiding light home. Sighing, knowing Maion probably would skin him for thinking of his daughter in any kind of romantic sense, but it was Chan that inspired him to be all he could be, he wanted to be worthy of her love, and to do that he would become the stallion he knew was in him somewhere. "I want to become a stallion worthy of her...." And he would, Maion could trample him to dust and he would get up and try again.

His head wings perking up, his expression one of purpose and determination. He might have a soft and warm heart, a truly tender soul, but he was also determind and was becoming stronger every day. He would never fight Maion if thats what it took, he knew Chan would never forgive him if he harmed her father, so if Maion ever challenged him he knew he would get hurt, but he would take it, he would find a way to prove to Maion that he would cherish his daughter like the treasure she was. First though he had to tell Chan herself how he felt, after all if she didn't feel the same then it was all for nothing.

Sofiel listened for a long moment, wondering if Maion knew.... part of him suspected that his old friend did, unless he was blinded by the fact that Chandra was his youngest -perhaps the old stallion wouldn't consider his daughter 'ripe' and ready to choice a mate for herself. He mused over that for a moment and then smiled. At least Sonnet was honourable, and from the tone of his voice Sofiel was sure the boy would stand by Chandra no matter what, thick or thin. Curious. It seemed Chandra was more like her father than just by her looks, just like him she demanded respect and loyality through her action, enticed those around her to do so.... was she even aware that she was doing it?

He nodded to the colt, "Does Maion know?" It was cruel perhaps, but part of Sofiel wanted to see if the boy would squirm... after all his actions showed and told so much about his emotions. For now Sofiel would use it to his advantage, shortly though he would teach the boy to guard his emotions better from those who would wish to do him harm. To reveal a weakness, a lover or family, by your actions was dangerous. It would leave him vunderable and would likely bring and end to his life or Chandra's. Sofiel owed Maion much, he would not see his daughter harmed, that included her heart.

After a moment he asked, "How does she feel about you?" It was likely the colt didn't know much about Sofiel, didn't know he was a close friend to the father of the mare he sought to claim as his own.... and even as he spoke Sofiel found himself wondering if he would dare tell the old stallion of this.

Lesson two was set, hiding your emotions from the enermy. Not as forceful as attacking and defending but just as improtant. It had saved Sofiel on many occasions... but it was sometimes hard to go back, the training making it hard to show emotions with anyone. It had taken Sofiel years to let Sachiko fully break through his defences.

(( I think I saw in one of your roleplays that this is all after their talk and confessions of love etc so I'm going to assume chandra knows. Kick me if thats wrong.))

Sonnets eyes widened a little at the question, Maion, he was going to beat him black and blue if he thought Sonnet had any such intentions towards his daughter. Though to his credit (though a father might not think so) he hadn't made ant improper advances on Chan. Blushing at the idea, but that aside he wouldn't want to be foolish untill he was sure Chan was happy with him. He didn't squirm though, the mild look of panic was all the reaction that came. "Not yet.... I was working up the courage to go to him tomorrow, its why I was talking to myself before, trying to work out how to be a stallion Maion would think deserving.... But also how to be the stallion I want to be."

Blushing thinking about the answer to the next question, he finally knew how Chan felt about him, but thinking of that night made his nose go pink. "She feels the same... I asked her if its what she wanted before deciding I would ask Maion for his blessing.... I'm not arrogant enough to assume that she felt that way about me." And he wasn't, he knew Chan liked him as a friend, but he would never have actually believed she loved him without hearing her say it.

Sofiel listened and nodded at appropriate times before turning his head to look out into the distance. He had to hand it to the lad that he had courage, very few would ever consider requesting permission from the father these days -especially if the father looked like Maion, where intimidation offened exuded from every pour of his body. "Maion's not so bad." He said at last with a chuckle, satisfied that if Chandra had not wanted this stallion she would have made it clear to him in their 'conversation'.

Still, Sofiel knew he had a lesson to teach the boy. "The only problem is.... if I was the enermy you just told me three things about you that I can use to my advantage. Can you guess what they are?" He said as he turned his head back to look at a blushing Sonnet once more. It still felt strange to say so much, Sofiel was very much a silent teacher when it came to the combat arts..... but he suspected the boy would never learn this lesson if he remained silent.
