He closed his eyes in palpable pain from her presence. He reopened his eyes, so that he didn't walk into anything. It was tempting, however. Would a tree branch to the head hurt less? Was that why Lian had done it?

"They say it's haunted," she told him cheerfully.

His ear flicked again. She didn't honestly believe on that. Did she? Apparently she did.

She took the ear flick as a sign of curiosity. "Apparently, the ghosts are of those who were murdered in these woods. They come out in the dark and bemoan their fate. And if they catch you, they'll kill you in a grisly manner."

His eye twitched a bit, then leveled off. Maybe if he stopped reacting, she'd stop.

"I heard that one guy had his flesh ripped from his body, but that didn't kill him. He bled to death," she went on cheerfully.

His eye twitched against his will. Didn't she ever stop?

If he had voiced the question, the answer would have been no. She never stopped. And just to prove that, she continued regaling him with the bloody and gruesome way the ghosts of the forest killed people.

He flicked his ears, trying to figure out if there was some way to plug them, so he wouldn't have to hear her.

"Look!" she interrupted herself. "See? I told you there was a river."

He went to the edge of the lake and pointedly began to drink, hoping she'd follow suit. No one could talk around a mouth full of water.

She followed his lead and took a few drinks before chirping, "You know, they say there's a monster living in this river."

He took a deep breath to try and calm himself, unfortunately his nose was under water. He began coughing, lifting his head free, and trying to clear his nose of the lake water.

He wanted to throttle her. He wanted to ring her filly neck. Thankfully for her, he was still choking on the water. He finally managed to lower his head and snort most of it out. He still felt uncomfortable, but at least he could breathe again. Eyes watering, he glared at her, entertaining the thought of dunking her in the lake to see if she floated. She probably would. Heads filled with air tended to be buoyant.
