Puff stuck his tongue out at Adalia in response, after which he nuzzled Alice; whom he had decided was his girl. Howl had one, didn't he? So why couldn't he have Alice as his? "Pu," he said. "Pu pu uff! Puff!" That settled it, Alice was his, and the woman who wanted to take her away was the enemy.
"I know I don't have to," Devlin said, frowning slightly. Didn't Adalia like him at all? Why was she trying to leave? Was it because of him? "Listen, I don't know if you know, but there could be ruffians around the place. I don't think you should be walking alone. Besides," he added with a smile, "I don't think Puff'll let Alice go unless we come along with you."

Alice, of course, had no idea what Puff would have meant by her being his - she was just happy to have a friend! She'd never been able to play with anyone but Adalia before, and she welcomed the change! Puff seemed like so much fun, and he reminded her of the dragons from the picture-books that Adalia sometimes read to her. "Ali, lice lice!" She didn't want to go! Why did they have to go???
Ruffians. Adalia couldn't remember the last time that she'd heard someone use the word 'ruffians' to describe a miscreant. Despite the odd wording, however, the dark-haired girl saw that Devlin didn't appear to be swain from his offer in taking her home in the least. Why was he so determined. "I...I suppose that it y-you could then..." A walk home couldn't hurt, she decided. It wasn't like it would be anything beyond that.
