Hah, his father was as unchanging as the rocks he worked with every day. He expected Jalarant to fail and to return. Perhaps that was why Jalarant himself expected to fail? Probably.

"I doubt it. He'll never be happy with anything." Still, the mining lad managed a slight smile. "But I like it here, so that's what matters, right? I feel like I can do things here that make a difference."

He looked down after a moment, then looked up, eyeing Pippith warily. "Erm, this is going to be a weird question, but does Pippith tolerate me? The only other dragon I've really interacted with outside of classes doesn't... Care for me too much. If I'm making him mad I can leave. I don't... want to be a bother."

"That is what matters," Set'al agreed. And Jalarant was doing well just by realizing that; perhaps he would Impress. But who knew? He had hopes for just about every candidate he'd ever met, but it couldn't be everyone. He was sure he'd been on a few bad sides for not ever being a candidate and getting chosen. What exactly it was that any one dragon looked for was impossible to say.

"Yeah, he doesn't mind at all. He's fine with most everyone, as long as they're respectful." Not getting up in his space without asking, not pointing out his size, that sort of thing. "You could pat him, if you like."

Obligingly, the dragon craned his head out. His eyes were entirely blue, supporting his rider's words.

Set'al had often, in their time together, explained to the bronze that being nice was important. If he wanted people to think he was the best, as he himself did, then he needed to be likable. It was another way he could be the best, and making something into a competition was the easiest way to get Pipith to go along with it. The lesson had already been reiterated today, for whomever they might meet. They needed to be especially likable now that they were strangers in a new place.

"Really?" Jalarant looked surprised, and even more so when Pippith seemed to be willing to be touched. He shyly caressed the dragon's hide, looking up at him with delighted eyes. "You're very handsome, Pippith. Thank you." Who wouldn't be enchanted by the big, bronze dragon? He certainly was.

"Oh, um.... I-I'm sorry. I've probably taken up too much of your time." Ah, and just when you thought Jalarant couldn't get any more awkward, he did. "I should probably go. It was very nice speaking with you both, though! Th-thank you."

Pipith had to admit, he rather liked being touched by non-riders. They were practically reverent about it, and it was always a nice confidence boost to be looked upon so adoringly. Why other dragons wouldn't like it was somewhat of a mystery to him.

Set'al was about the last person who minded someone taking up his time - he hardly even noticed! As long as they were nice, the distraction was always welcome. "It was nice meeting you. We'll see you around, I'm sure."
