There is one problem the guild has had for a long time. Every so often everyone will say they don't like how things are then say things need to be changed. They get some change, then end up eventually relying on one or two people to do everything. Then when it seems like they are the only one expected to do stuff they get discouraged, lose interest, etc., and things end up right where they were to begin with.
Its good to talk about things but they need to be followed by action. Sure we'll be getting a new captain within the next couple of weeks but if everyone ends up relying on them to get things active again we'll end up where we are now, again.
Everyone in this guild is equally responsible for the fate of the guild. If you want the guild to grow you have to get out there and make it known that we exist. Do thread games every 3-5 games, make SG themed threads in word games, make sniper related discussions in the GCD relating to gaia plot. Do these things with SG banners in our sigs, and people will start to notice that we are here and come out of curiosity. But if you just sit back and wait for someone else to do it, it'll never happen.
If you want to see something happen, make the first move and make it happen. I know that if I end up as captain thats how I'll run things. Crew and captain are just members with extra buttons that can move threads and change the names of things. They're still members like everyone else.
Don't have the time to GM but are interested in running a game at some point, then run a mini-game in the guild if there is nothing going on or make a quick one outside of the guild. The majority of you guys have been here long enough to have a good idea of how a game runs to do this if you ever feel like it.
As for skype, msn, and aim chats. A lot of these are between friends. Whether its about games, RL stuff or other things, it may not be something they want to share with anyone. Everyone here has private chats with friends, just because a group of SGers chat on skype sometimes doesn't necessarily mean that they're leaving new people out. Its the fact that they have 4-5 years of friendship and like talking in their group of people they trust.
At the same time, people should also take some time out to post threads, even if its a silly test thread in what should be a dead sub-forum. Don't sit around waiting for someone to make a thread. If you want to talk in a thread make one. =D
All I really want to say is that everyone here has an equal amount of responsibility to the guild. Nothing is going to happen or change unless you guys put in the effort to make those changes. So lets get things running again and make it past our 5th anniversary. Also, if I'm captain and you guys don't post much in some sub-forums, they're gonna get random silly names until you guys do post.

I understand what Insom is saying about everyone being equally responsible for things in the guild, and it's true, to some extent, that whole "be the change" thing.
But it's kind of pointless to have a leader just so they'll have the title. I mean, if it's just a group effort, and everyone is equally responsible, then just have a couple people be crew, and they'll do all the things that normal guild members can't do like move/delete threads and stuff, and we'll all just sit around brainstorming, and all putting in the same effort.
I mean, being captain means that all failures/successes will be ON YOU... But mostly the failures, so the captain needs to be able to deal with being the reason everything goes wrong.
Maybe what I'm trying to say is; if you want the guild to have a captain, you can't say the guild has to be a place full of equals, since you're putting in effort to have everyone choose somebody to lead them.
AND YES! I am aware I went off on like 3 different tangents!

I agree with what Insom is saying, but the problem is we've been saying these things for years now and it hasnt changed anything.
We've had arguments over what crew is for many times in the past and have never come to a concrete solution. Are they there to do everything? Should they only be there to move threads? We argue for pages and pages but it doesnt actually DO anything. Meanwhile crew keeps doing everything for us, making plans for the guild in a locked subforum no one else can see, and regular guild members know they are doing it so they sit around and wait for crew. Then everyone gets stressed because a lot of times the consensus is crew shouldnt be running the guild like that.
If I'm captain I'm going to change that. I'll cut crew down to Captain and 2 VCs. Crew will be responsible SOLELY for moving threads and stepping in in case of flammatory drama. Crew will NOT run your events or your advertising campaigns or even your GM elections. It will all be up to the guild as a whole. I still believe we need a captain, leaders are important even if they are just overseeing everything. The guild was a disaster last time we had no captain, after Zae left the guild and demoted the VCs. Having no captain is a bad idea. Plus a captain can get the ball rolling, and then let the SGers push it the rest of the way. I will even get rid of the crew subforum, because really it will be useless. If there is a situation where we NEED to talk to each other, we can pm. But there shouldnt be a situation like that, because the guild should be making all descisions as a whole.
I will also make running GM elections the resposnibilty of those who play the game, not the responsiblity of only crew members. I have detailed how I plan on doing that in my VOTE FOR NYMPHIE thread smile Go check it out!

Last thing we need is a captain who is just going to sit back and do nothing but move threads. The captain needs to be setting an example, but the guild can't expect the captain to do everything either. I know if I become captain, I'm going to be kinda bossy and keep after the guild to do stuff that people suggest if it doesn't go past the talking stage. I might be busy now or super busy later, but I know I'm also going to have some free time in the future too. Same for anyone else running. They might not be busy right now but that could change in a week or a month. Thats why you need a couple of VCs around to help out. Nymphie's ideas are pretty similar to mine anyway. I'd suggest even having the current GM run elections for the next GM only because they can't run two times in a row right now. Members are perfectly capable of running things on their own if they want to. Look at Nymphie and Spirit Month. She wanted to run an event and did it. She didn't wait on anyone. Others should do that too. Even making threads in certain forums helps. I made a thread in word games back in December that died then, but every once in a while got notices that people were still posting in it. Look at it here: Sniper word game thread The last posts were in September, ten months after it was originally made. If we make more threads like that people will become more aware that we exist. Staying in the guild only is like staying at home and complaining you can never meet anyone new. You have to get out. And the captain is the one who should set that example but they are not going to be able to do much without help from the guild.

I don't know if this is the right time and place for this, but I'm just going to say this as a lurker. I don't know when I came here, I just know that I was in two games.
Something that really kinda prevented me from sticking around was the scale of the games at the time. I also found another place that ran Mafia on a smaller scale. I know this cannot be considered a problem of the guild (other than the exponential decrease of participants)
I really wish you all good luck in selecting a new Captain, and I will continue to keep an eye on the guild.

Meru- I don't think it would be fair for you to just make Moo Ell your VC if you got elected. Sorry. 3
@Everyone else: The more that I read this and the more I think about it- the more I don't think I'm CAPTAIN material... I am really bad at coming up with ideas. I'm good at executing plans, but ultimately whenever I sit and think "what can we do to make the guild more active?" I just draw a blank. That's why I've always kind of enjoyed being a crew member but NOT captain. Once someone does come up with something I go "Oh! Alright? I need to do this, this, and this? Done." I kind of enjoy being the worker bee!
The only idea I ever really came up with was backalleys- and despite that some of us have had some good times because of that subforum- it really wasn't much of a success.
So, what I'm saying here is that I respectfully decline the nominations for captain. I'll probably run for Vice captain, and I really hope that when those elections come you vote for me! I always make time for the guild when the s**t hits the fan and I really do like being told what to do (kinky)!

As being a new member I really will not vote for a new captain since I don't have a lot of experience, especially on what a guild needs to grow, and I barely know anyone.
However being a new member I do know that thread games, word or real ones, would be beneficial. Maybe some time we can get a couple of people from the guild and create a thread like the one Insom made. It would be fun and a great way to bring people into the guild without overwhelming them with all the details of how to play.
Also same with having some more activity in the guild when we are not in a game. I would love to see threads based on events, I have several ideas and when we have a new leader elected I will attempt to start some. It will help new members know that there is more to this guild than just the game.
I do not know anything about people using skype, and I do not see any major reason for it to be a bad thing, if anything it adds a new level of where we can take this guild in the future. It is just like towns, PM's, and IMing in my opinion.
I know I am agreeing with many ideas that where brought into this thread, I really do love all of the ideas and hope that this thread becomes great and able to pass that 5th anniversary. I hope to become friends with all of you and be able to hang out for years to come. I think that we can see this as an opportunity to grow and take that well needed step to reach greater heights that this guild never dreamed where possible. I am going to start planning some threads for the guild, it may take me a little bit, but I hope all of you will post in them.
