Don't they have the same burden of proof?

You are probably "agnostic" which means you don't know whether God/gods exist but you are open to the idea. An agnostic doesn't worship anything or belong to a religion, but they don't think that God/gods are 100% fake... they are happy being fence sitters and not knowing because there's not enough satisfying evidence either way. emo.gif

This has somehow gotten to be the popular definition of agnosticism. It has some problems with it. How can you assume, that as long as there is no evidence for something not existing, that the chances are 50-50?! Then there would be a 50-50 chance of existence for almost anything you can think of! The problem here is, where the burden of proof lies - it lies on the claimer. You have to demonstrate the existence of something, not the non-existence of it. Further more, most atheists ( who are atheist for good reasons, we'll leave out the teenage rebel atheist ) are not closed to the idea of god - in the case of sufficient evidence being provided, I'll happily believe it - but for now, there hasn't been any.

Again:

Agnostic - KNOWLEDGE
Atheist - BELIEF

I don't KNOW if god exists but I don't BELIEVE he does -> agnostic atheist.

Is that so hard to get, people?

I know what you mean. What I think she was describing was the extremely rare type of agnostic that actually is in the middle. Most people believe the same as she does of agnostics... if they even know what the word means...
