When it came to the taxonomy of different types of women, there weren't really any Jack considered 'one of the guys.' There were simply girls that he'd liked to get to know better on a intimate level, and then there weren't. It amused Jack, to see Ellie so pleased by something he'd considered an insult.
"Don't worry," he drawled, unbothered by her refusal of his mostly gracious offer to share the shopping cart, "I didn't think for a moment that you're a damsel in distress."
Probably there wasn't a soul in the world delusional enough to make that mistake.
He stepped into line behind Ellie, wincing absently when the cart squeaked to a stop, and glanced sideways at the Granola Lady. Freddie did too. He smiled toothily at the woman, who grinned back at him.
"Sure," he shrugged, "might as well."
Jack started towards the sample counter and, indulging in genial small talk with the woman behind it, took two of the little granola squares. He teased Freddie playfully with one of them, "Remember, kiddo; chewing is good for you," and then placed it gently in his tiny, outstretched hands.
Looking to Ellie, grinning from ear to ear, Jack shook the second one at her, "want it?"

Typically, Ellie wasn't a health food nut. And Granola, in her books, was considered health food. However, almost all rules about what she ate went out the window recently due to the basic hunger she had. She still lived by the rule of avoiding overly sweet things. And fortunately, granola was not under such a category unless it was covered in chocolate.
So the offer didn't go ignored. "Yeah, sure, give it 'ere!" As if she had done this many times before, the girl then carefully shifted the boxes against her body towards her left arm. With the weight focusing more against her body, she managed to let her right arm slip away for a moment, reaching out with a palm open and flat. Once more, she repeated her direction of "Give it 'ere!" all while trying to make certain that her burritos didn't go tumbling down.

Jack watched Ellie struggle with her burrito boxes. There was an amused quirk to his eyebrow. The corners of his lips twitched. He debated, for a moment, about denying her the granola treat, and then thought better of it.
While not always the nicest of boys, Jack had a soft spot for women. Even when they, with all of their spiky hair and foul language, had rougher edges than he did.
"You know," said Jack as he placed the bit of granola in her outstretched hand, "if you'd quit being so stubborn and just put those boxes in the cart, this would be a lot easier."
But Jack had a feeling Ellie liked doing things the hard way. That was, in Jack's not so humble opinion, the problem with people who had too much pride.

Her hand quickly shot from where it managed to latch onto the bit of granola and quickly thrust itself into her rather baggy pocket, releasing the granola into the land of lint. It almost looked like her burrito boxes would come tumbling down, but her hand came popping back out and made for a good save.
"Easier... yes... interestin'... not so much...it ain't fun if ya don't have t'work fer somethin'!"
The line was slowly creeping forward, and soon enough the granola lady and the trio had about 10 people spaced between them. And just as slowly, they were making their way up to the front of CostMart.
"...soo... what school ya go ta', eh?" There was a pause long enough for her eyes to glance from the front of the line to Jack. "I don't think I've ever seen ya at Meadowview... but at a school that big, ya don't see everyone, ya know?"

It surprised Jack, when Ellie shoved the cluster of granola in her pocket, instead of just popping it in her mouth. He came from a household where leftovers dominated the refrigerator. Nothing was ever thrown out until it stank, or started growing extra leaves. But that was one thing, and not the same as this.
Clearly, Ellie had more important things to worry about than getting fuzz stuck between her teeth.
"I go to Hillworth," he drawled, and stooped to collect a box of crackers from the cart. He passed the box to Freddie, who'd been reaching over his seat for them, and beamed now at his Uncle Jack.
"Thanks!" He squeaked and then tore through the cardboard and the plastic to get to the treat inside.
Jack glanced sideways at Ellie, and started placing his future purchases on the counter beside the till. "I used to go to Meadowview. But, uh, there was a misunderstanding. So they kicked me out."

Hillworth.
There was always something absolutely fascinating to Ellie about that school. So for a brief moment, it almost seemed as if her eyes were sparkling like fireworks. Her expression, which had been relatively neutral for a while, seemed to almost burst to form a rather large, impressed grin.
"Hillworth, no sh*ttin'?! What'dya do t'get kicked over there?" She shifted the boxes in her arms slightly, as if testing to see if they'd fall or not. "And don't sugar coat it... th' last few guys who told me they went t'Hillworth tried t'make it a sob story..." She paused for a moment, waiting for the redhead to finish putting his items on the counter before even considering putting her own at the very edge.
"Well... if it's a sob story... then don't tell me... All these sob stories are makin' Hillworth seem like a pansy-a** place... so if it's a sob story... save Hillworth some dignity an' don't tell me!"

"I stuffed some kid in a locker after school," came Jack's answer. When he spoke, his voice was casual, but there was a mysterious, almost indiscernible red tinge to his ears. "He was stuck there over night."
Jack was not proud. Jack was, in fact, a little ashamed of himself.
It hadn't been about bullying. It hadn't even been about that kid, really. It was about him, and BJ, and Ducky, and the lengths he'd go through to make them laugh.
Looking back, considering the consequences of his actions, Jack couldn't remember what was so funny. He'd enjoyed the mostly laid-back atmosphere of Meadowview, and suffered, now, under Hillworth's strict rules.
"Kid pissed himself."
He caught Ellie's eye, and finished paying for his groceries. It wasn't in Jack to sugar coat.
"So they threw me out."

Ellie was grinning by the time he finished with his explanation. Apparently that was the sort of stuff that she felt people were allowed to get into Hillworth about. "Sh*t, if I was stuck in a locker all night... yeah... I'd piss myself too!" She let out a slight chuckle at the mystery kid's expense as she moved up in the line, setting all of her burritos down. The clerk gave her a familiar strange look. Obviously the blonde was well known for her love of the cheap little microwavable burritos.
"Th' last guy I talked to 'bout Hillworth with... totally started like... preachin' t'me... he wasn't a pansy or anythin'... not with th'bike he had... but... th'preachin' was gay." Ah Jesse Alvarez, classical fit for Hillworth, yet had to have something that didn't quite fit. She hadn't heard from him since she met him that one time, and she owed him some sort of motorcycle parts.
"Excuse me, Miss...?"
Golden eyes blinked and eventually noticed the clerk looking at her expectantly. The total price for the burritos was on the nearby screen.
"Oh, right!" She pulled out the credit card she was borrowing from Mom and swiped it easily.
"Hey, Jack... do ya know a guy named Jesse Alvarez at Hillworth?"

It surprised Jack, to find Ellie so amused by his brutality. Jack was not amused. He'd paid for his mistakes, in spades, and disliked attending Hillworth, where the sober decor and disciplinary atmosphere left him feeling oppressed. Behind those cold doors Jack wasn't allowed to wear his favourite clothes or say the things that he liked.
Worst of all, he was separated from his best friends.
"Alvarez?" Jack hid his distaste for the way she chuckled behind a cocked eyebrow, and shook his head slowly. He was familiar with several of the other boys at school, but couldn't possibly be expected to know all of their names.
"Nah," he shrugged, and tweaked little Freddie's button nose, "can't say that the name rings a bell."
"I'll tell you what, though," brightening, wheeling his cart towards the door, Jack offered Ellie a mostly friendly wave, "I'll let him know I saw you, if I happen to bump into him."

The blonde was required to stay behind for a bit longer as the clerk bagged up her boxes of burritos, two bags so she could avoid worrying about having a sky-high tower to walk home with. She didn't quite offer as enthusiastic a wave back, but she did lift a hand up with one shake to the side to let him know she saw and returned the sentiments.
"I'd totally owe ya a solid if ya do that!" she called back to him before taking her two bags at hand. Had it been a slightly more normal visit to CostMart, she would have left for home now. Yet, she still had somewhere else to investigate. With a solid frown finding a place back on her face, she proceeded to the garage area so she could do more research.
