Malina was breathless with excitement, a jumble of awkward, coltish limbs as she scampered after a much more collected Bonth. "We're going flying today, Bonth!" Yes, Malina. I know. I told you so, remember? the dragonet informed her rider patiently. They were senior Weyrlings now, and Bonth at least was quite proud of that fact. There had been no question of attending every single lesson available, and learning as much as possible. They had had to, because it was what the Green wanted. What she needed. "I know, I know. You told me. I remember." Mali felt a little sheepish, but no less excited.

This was something that she could become good at! Perhaps in the air, she would be far more graceful than on the ground? She knew that was true of the sea. In the water, Malina could be graceful. "I know you told me, but... it's still exciting, isn't it?" And of course, Bonth had to concede that it was an exciting occasion, though she herself did not seem terribly moved by it. Bonth had a certain... restraint where emotions were concerned. For reasons beyond Malina's comprehension, she didn't seem to like being seen to admit to liking much of anything, or having strong feelings in general.

Of course, it had never occurred to the girl that those "strong feelings" that she experienced were childish ones. Did the Green believe them to be beneath her? Perhaps? "Moira?" That blur had to be Moira, and Serlaith. Feeling suddenly shy, she lagged a little behind Bonth, until the Green abruptly pushed her forward, shoving her gently toward the others. "Is something wrong with Ofelia?" Oh no. From the sounds of things, something was wrong? Oh no! Not today! "Ofie, wake up, you can't miss this lesson." A little bit of her shyness was remedied by the pressing need to help.

Oh! Ofelia was awake. "You're okay?" she inquired anxiously, hovering a bit on the outskirts of the little gathering. They hadn't even made it to the lesson, and already there was trouble with falling! That did not bode well for the occasion, did it? Ofelia had said that her head hurt. "Is it... does it hurt a lot?" She had at least a little training as a healer, after all, as useless as she had been in practice. But then, they all knew a bit of first aid, or so she thought. What she needs, Bonth told her rider with exaggerated patience, is space. Dutifully, Mali backed away.

N'ymi watched as the red rider got to her feet shakily. Not a good sign, the girl's brain could be bruised. But she was just a blue rider and not one that got listened to often so she kept her comments to Daroth who passed them along to the others. She was now leaning back against his chest and watching with concern. "Shuldn't move 'er so much."

Daroth wanted to help. But what could a blue dragon do expect watch the others take charge. Still, he could add their input. Don't shake her too much! It's okay Serinth. N'ymi is right. She just needs to stay still for a minute.

“There, good. Here, do something with her, Moria.” He was quick to leave Ofelia’s wobbly balance in the queenrider’s hands.

It was all people, V’al had to decide. He was often tempted to critique women’s tendency for hysteria, their absurd abundance of emotion they couldn’t seem to control, but S’kor’s attempt to draw the Candidatemaster over was just as vexing as the panicking from the women clustered around the scene. Ofelia was coming around just fine, and thankfully without the notice of O’rer, who would likely have kept her groundbound for at least several days. He imagined Ofelia would have likely broken that rule, and the following nonsense from just this one moment would have been the talk of the weyr for some weeks.

Foolishness. Once Ofelia was on her feet he gave the most exasperated, hopeless sigh a young man of fifteen could manage, and stepped back very quickly. Lerath, sensing his rider’s aggravated nerves, have a sedate rumble as V’al went to stand betwixt the blue’s heavy legs (where there was some safety from the angry crimson at least). Really, if he felt responsible for others, he would have chided the crimson directly for injuring her own rider that way. She’d caused her own problem, but V’al counseled himself to silence and pressed a palm against his forehead.

Lerath slowly lowered his wing and snaked his head around to eye the group with a whirling, curious eye. That was quite a bit of action.

Completely unnecessary,” was V’al’s verbal comment, and he shook his head at the heavens.

Just what the shardin' hell was going on?! O'rer had been ignoring much of the issue of the Crimsonrider in the sand - that rather stupid Tanner girl that'd been a Stands Impression, but when others started to show up and dragons got upset and into the picture O'rer knew that it was his job to get things under control eventually. The tiny!Queen and her tiny!Rider seemed to be holding things in place for now, but enough was enough. Most of the Candidates had arrived anyway and it was time for the lesson to get underway.

"If you're done being a gaggle of ovines over there, get to your dragons and we'll get started. If any of you are unable to do this on your own then you're more than welcome to leave and not come back. That goes for you Crimsonrider. If you can't stay on your feet then you don't need to be here and your dragon can suffer on."

O'rer sighed as the Bronzerider he'd come to know as S'kor spoke to him, and he rubbed his temple with his hand as he listened to him try and greet him ever so politely. He'd been annoyed enough with Moira's antics, but since she rode a gold he had to nut up and shut up. Brown-nosing from a Bronzer was a different situation, not to mention his little sister Greener. D'can would pay for this, and so the Candidatemaster didn't even feel the need to respond to those talking to him. Lessons people. Lessons.

"First things first, did everyone remember their leathers? If you forgot them then you're no better than the cripple over there staggering next to her dragon, although it seems she's gotten her leathers with her so she's doing good so far. You've got one candlemark to put your leathers on properly before I come around and inspect them. If you've been attending lessons properly then you'll know how to do it on the first try and I shouldn't have to make you take them all off to put them back on."

O'rer crossed his arms over his chest as he watched the faces of the Weyrlings. Many of them were probably cursing at him for how he was speaking to them, but they were Weyrlings now - not Candidates. He wasn't going to sugar coat things and coddle them to make life easier - if any of them joined a Wing then their Wingleader was certain to be worse.

"For those who manage to get their leathers on correctly within the hour will get additional sky time. The rest of you who aren't able will be stuck on the ground and given remedial lessons. I trust there are no objections?"

He raised an eyebrow, daring them to speak.

"Then begin."

Little ones, are you ready? This is a moment you will never forget.

It was so funny for Hitath to call the dragons "little" considering they were all larger than she was, even the smaller Greens, and the Candidatemaster's lifemate slowly rose from her seated position into one that would allow her to take off easily into the air. There was an air about her that hopefully set many of the dragons at ease, and some of the riders too. If such a gentle dragon could belong and love someone like O'rer maybe he wasn't an entire pile of steaming dung!

[ EVERYONE, ROLL A D6. If you roll 1 - 3 you didn't get your leathers on right the first time. You can roll again in your next post(s) and hope you get it before O'rer comes around! D:. 4 - 6, congrats, you did it!

You are allowed to roll first and then edit in your post!

Ofelia gets a -1 to her roll because of a head injury. Booo! ]

V’al, still shaking his head, gave O’rer half an ear before gathering up his gear. He had tried this a few times with Lerath, but usually the blue was off in the air avoiding such exercises and he hoped the lack of practice wouldn’t affect his performance too much.

Lerath, however, was not a dragon to miss much of anything. That belt on my side it wrong. The cinch should not be dangling over my leg. he told His crisply, not even bothering to look back. He had a highly unusual memory for a dragon, especially for the youth of a ‘lower’ color, and he was proud of his distinguishing ability. He enjoyed remembering as much as flying, and while V’al corrected some slight error with the saddle, he remembered something else important. Serlaith has an idea… By the time Lerath had explained himself to V’al, his rider’s expression was a carefully blank mask. He stepped back from the saddle for O’rer’s inspection with a bit more smugness than he could have earned from a well-buckled strap however. While waiting for the Candidatemaster’s inspection, he passed a thoughtful look to Moria.

When O'rer didn't respond, S'kor shrugged and pulled his bronze off to the side. If he didn't want to talk that was his choice.

Away from the others he took a long look at Scarath. "Alright, kneel down and lets get this started." He grabbed the saddle and settled it over Scarath's shoulders. Making sure it was snug in place before moving to follow the straps down and attach them. "Don't move yet."

He worked through them all, getting them cinched, then went back through them. Noticing one strap had gotten twisted, S'kor set it straight. "How's that feel?"

'Mine, those straps should be tighter.' He indicated the loose ones and stood patiently while His tightened them.

Ofie.

Not now.

...you're bleeding on me. Nose blood

As if ya can see the blood on yer hide. Jus' shut up, I'mma finish this quickly.

There was a pause as Ofelia felt herself sway, supported only by the bulk of her lifemate against her shoulder. As hard as it was for Ofelia to stand she was having no problems at all when it came to putting the leathers on, her hands working without her brain even having to tell her what to do.

Ofelia knew leather, more specifically these riding leathers that she'd made herself, so her hands knew every inch of them. Every crease from where a buckle had sat to be pulled tight called to her, alerting her to the correct place that they needed to be set, and without so much as blinking or even opening her eyes the tanner managed to get much of her dragon done.

Your nose is still bleeding.

Your face is a nose bleed.

. . . That was horribly sad.

It was not that Malina didn't know how to put her leathers on properly, it was that her hands were shaking. Her hands always trembled when she was excited, and O'rer's behavior ensured that they were also trembling out of anxiety. She'd learned this, hadn't she? If she could... could just get everything right, then she'd be okay. Try it like this, Malina, Bonth suggested, attempting to assist her rather scattered rider. Though the Green was very clever, and her approach a good one, it ultimately failed. It failed, Mali was sure, because of her. "I'm sorry, Bonth," she apologized, feeling so bad for not being good enough for her intelligent Green.

She just didn't have it together. Desperately, she wished Sheri were there to give her tips, and steady her hands. "Can... someone...?" No, she wouldn't ask for help, not when O'rer was so death on them. She trailed off lamely, and hung her head a little, fussing with the leathers. Oh, if only she were better at this. She was rubbish as a rider, she knew. She knew that, and it didn't matter that she knew, because she had Impressed. She was slowing everybody down... as usual. Bright she might well be, but... there were some things that brightness alone could not accomplish.

Is he always like this? Daroth asked N'ymi quietly. The blue held still as she moved about him, placing the leathers on what she hoped was the right way. He ducked his head and watched as Lerath and the others started work on theirs riding straps.

N'ymi merely shrugged, taking the Candidate Master's tongue lashing without batting an eye. As a former creche worker, his foul mood and tongue was not the worst she had to deal with but he was the man in charge. And if they ever wanted to fly, they would have to do as he said. "Who kno's? 'e culd be puttin' a sho'. 'is green seems 'appy enuf."

Climbing down, she tightened the straps under his arms and then waited to see if it was right.

Edit for roll: Daroth looked down and her and stretched out. He tried to look underneath himself. Something is sticking me.

Growling to herself, N'ymi went back to her dragon to see what she had missed or messed up. "I gotcha, Dar."

She was excited and hurrying. Only just a little, she told herself. They seemed so easy to put on. Optheli dashed around her twitching dragon buckling straps. Just as she got to the end, she realized that there was the one strap she was holding... and no other. A frown crossed her lips. Counting the straps down to where she thought it was suppose to go. A silly mistake, surely. A fast readjustment and all the straps were matched up.

At least they were not the only ones having trouble though Daroth did not like not getting it right the first time and N'ymi quietly agreed with him. The blue spread himself out so she could find what was poking or pinching his underside. The rest seemed to be okay. Hurry Nasuymi before Hitath's comes and yells some more.

Daroth may not want to get yelled at but Nymi went through each motion again, checking to see what she might have missed. Ah ha! A buckle and one loop done the wrong way. Undoing her mess, she worked on it again. "Howzit feel now?"

EDIT FOR ROLL: Still not right. Now my other side pinches. Take it all off and try again? Daroth suggested, bending down low. The blue spread his wings slightly, showing off their bright pattern.

Cursing a little louder now but still nothing that could be heard, N'ymi completely took the straps off to try again. She had paid very close attention when they talked about straps and when the Weyrling Master had shown them on his dragon. Okay. Over and under, loop deh loop. "'nother try, then."

At this point, Malina was about ready to dissolve into tears of frustration. She was trying so hard, and nothing worked right. She couldn't get the straps to align themselves properly, and not even Bonth's careful efforts were helping. When she pulled on one particularly stubborn strap, it snapped in her face, released from its buckle. Her lower lip quivered ever so slightly as she pulled herself together, trying all the harder to sort things out. If she just fit the strap back into place, surely everything would be all right? No such luck. This time, it was the buckle that gave, and it got her right in the mouth.

Ouch. Malina, settle down. Your upset is making this worse, Bonth admonished gently. "Sorry, sorry," Mali said anxiously, and stared at the mess she'd made. This was just... it was all getting worse and worse, and she didn't know how to make heads or tails of it. She let out a little woof of air, and went back to the task at hand, her fingers shaking ever so slightly as she did so. ... No, there was not much change that she'd manage it before O'rer noticed.

N'ymi looked over to see her bunk mate, Malina getting frustrated. She wasn't too happy with the straps either but if a scene was made, O'rer would be on them like flies on dung. Actually making conversation, she moved towards Daroth's backside and hissed over to Malina. "Dun worry. Take it slow an' try teh follow wot I do. I a'most got it. Tis teh las' strap actin' screwy."

Never hurt to look good for the ladies or someone smaller than him, Daroth carefully moved so that the pair could see what he and Nasuymi were doing. Don't worry Bonth. We will help you.

Giving a slight smile, N'ymi went through the motions again, this time hoping for the right result.

EDIT FOR ROLL: See Bonth, move your wing and leg so the straps can go under and around. Nasuymi, you got it! No pinching this time. Daroth puffed up a little bit.

Laughing, she gave the blue a slap on the leg. Turning, she ran her hand through her short hair and moved back so Malina could see what she did. "Ya thin' ya got it?"

Malina gave N'ymi a look of such profound gratitude that it was almost pathetic. ... Or, possibly, it was pathetic. It was so kind of the Bluerider to help her out, even though she hadn't really voiced her plea. "Thank you, I think that... I think that I mucked it up, somehow." Though she couldn't be sure where. This time, her gratitude served her poorly, as when she went to follow her clutchmate's instructions, she managed to undo the forward progress she'd made. "Oh. Oh dear." That... would not do. But how would she fix it? And could she fix it before O'rer noticed?

Thank you, Daroth, but as you can see, my rider needs your rider's assistance more, Bonth replied smoothly, not at all of the opinion that she was a lady in need of assistance. Still, she moved as she'd been instructed. Unfortunately, Malina chose just that time to try again, and it ended up backfiring. Badly. That was rather typical, really. However, Bonth was certain that once Mali had it down, she would be able to get it right every time. It was simply a matter of training her muscles to work right.

Ofelia couldn't help but notice how piss-poor some of the others were doing, more specifically Malina. Now, Ofelia wasn't that close to the Greenrider since they hadn't spent much time together, but that didn't mean she didn't like the girl plenty well enough to try and give her a hand in rigging her leathers. It was important to know the motions since eventually new leathers were needed, but for now getting the feel of the creases would work too.

Stay 'ere, I'mma go an' help out Mali.

Do as you please. You're still bleeding though.

'ush yer beak.

With the certainty that O'rer wasn't watching Ofelia walked (read: stumbled) her way over to where Malina struggled with N'ymi at her side. Quietly ushering the Bluerider to the side the Crimsonrider took Malina's hands in her own and placed them on the cinkles in the leather, showing her what she needed to feel for. She'd have been more than glad to actually leather up the Green for her friend but that was defeating the purpose.

"Now ya give it a try an' if ya can feel the crinkles ya did it wrong. The buckles should be sittin' on them, not yer hands."
