As Ceresa awoke, she noticed two things. One; it was eerily quiet, and two; this was not her room in the facility. She wasn’t hooked up to any machines monitoring her vitals, there wasn’t anyone in the room with her, and she didn’t have to squint because the room was so brightly white. Well, that wasn’t totally true. She still couldn’t see very well. The room she was currently in was quite dark, and well, creepy. Her eyes began to slowly adjust, and she could see that the room was quite dilapidated. It was a shocking and not welcome change from the old place. In fact, though she’d only ever admit it to herself, she rather liked the facility. It was familiar and really all she had ever known.
Ceresa slowly swung her legs over the side of her bed, still feeling groggy from whatever it was that they had given her. She rubbed her neck only to find a residue left on her hand. Was that graphite? Perhaps the side effect from the last experiment. In all reality this didn’t really bother her. She didn’t remember anything before she became what she was, and she was content with being a tool for experimentation. After all, she was being useful. She could even be helping people somewhere. On top of that, they had never really mistreated her, but would she have even known if they had?
She rubbed her face and stood, being very careful not to fall over. Her room was quite small from what she could see anyway. The light coming from the other side of the door was faint, and sometimes it would flicker. Perhaps it was electrical shortage, or people walking around? She sauntered over to the door and wiped a spot off to place her ear. She could hear faint rustling, but nothing conclusive. It could be rats, people or even air vents blowing papers. Nothing was certain anymore.
Ceresa returned to her bed, and placed her head in her hands. Why did they abandon her? Did they leave her here to die, alone and unsure? Was she not useful to them anymore? Clearly not, given her current situation. She was losing hope; she was giving up; until the door opened just a crack. She raised her head to see who was there, but there was no one. It was like it opened on its own to show her it was not over. But she had no idea that this was just the beginning.
