The promise to help cover for damages seemed to up Perry's confidence a shade. Without any hestitation or wasteful flippancy in his movements, he swung open the driver's side door to his station wagon and slammed it back shut just as readily, practiced hands deftly starting the engine and clicking his seatbelt into place in a quick instant. There was an air freshener dangling under the rearview mirror, shaped like a sea turtle, that swung in little lazy circles as he pulled the car out into a ready position.

The monster was in his sights, and Tony was in the monster's. Now it was just the simple matter of maneuvering himself so he wouldn't be taking down both, and then he slammed down on the gas pedal just like any man about to hit the age of a midlife crisis would.

Tony watched Perry go to the station wagon and get in, frowning as he continued to do his best to keep the monster watching him. It didn't take much, as the worm wasn't the most clever of beasts. He hoped, at least: if this was all some kind of trick to build their confidence he was going to be very upset.

If he had the chance to be, at least.

Standing his ground, Tony yelled a series of stupid, ineffectual insults at the largely disinterested and certainly not listening monster. It instead was just watching its next meal, its next starseed, and it lunged at Tony suddenly. That caused the almost-brave man to yelp and scramble away. Barely getting away from a gaping maw, he saw the worm lurch away from him just before it could catch him, a car hitting it just as planned.

Hey! Their plan had worked.

The youma rolled away from the car as it came to a stop, the force of the blow turning it into a rolling pin of sorts. Propelled by physics, it slammed into a gas tank and burst into... dust. It vanished, dead if Tony knew anything about monsters, and the librarian let out a whoop of surprise and delight.

And then ran over as best he could to the car to make sure his partner in this vigilante effort wasn't hurt.

Perry never thought that running into something with his car could be so satisfying. Normally hitting things with one's car led to a great deal of panic, rage, and financial crises, but with this one there was no shocked slamming on the car horn: instead, the teacher pumped his fist out the window and gave a victory cry that was just as loud. There was something about this experience that was a lot like hooking a record-breaking fish and then going on to successfully catch it -- it was exhilarating, and the reality was half-hard to believe.

Or, in simpler terms, killing monsters was <******** awesome.

He staggered a bit as he walked out of the car, but after a few steps he proved to be alright. Flashing a winning grin at his improptu partner, he gave Tony a couple of brotherly slaps on the back and leaned up against a hood of his car so he could admire their handiwork... or what was left of it. It was a whole lot of dust now.

"So, Tone, tell me..." he started, "you do this sort of thing often? Ghostbustin'?"

Tony looked reached the car but already knew that nothing had happened to his new friend. Friend? Well, they had just killed a youma together, kinda, so it seemed that was enough to bond over. Maybe they could go out for a drink later, and settle the matter. It wasn't like Tony had an abundance of friends his own age, after all, so maybe this whole thing had been rather fortuitous.

Besides the monster part.

Grinning as he watched Perry hoot and pump his fist in the air, the librarian couldn't help but feel that rush of relief that came with adrenaline receding, leaving him feeling excited, shaken, and in a very good mood. It was like a natural high, in a way, and he let out his own laugh as he drew closer.

Trying not to fall over when Perry enthusiastically slapped him on the back, his cane proving useful here, Tony laughed and nodded, eyes turning over the scene. They had done well! Not too much collateral damage, nothing they had caused, and they had probably saved some lives here. Not just their own, either!

A very good day, for two normal guys.

"Uh, no, not often. I mean. More often than I'd like, I think, though I tend to be in the 'not very useful, hiding behind this insert object here' position. It is actually a much more thrilling change than I would have thought to actually be able to do some damage to one of those things. Though, I mean, you did most of the work. And good job with that by the way! That was fantastic!"

Many things made Tony wordy, and being excited was one of them. He tried to stop the flow of the babble though, grinning toothily at Perry and chuckling.

The teacher had barely known this librarian for all of five or ten minutes, and he could already tell he was liking. Granted, it didn't take much for Perry to be friendly with just about anybody, but this was different. They had bonded. They had bonded in the manliest, most badass way humanly imaginable: over the remains of a huge monster they had just killed.

With his car, even. In short: he liked this guy.

"More often than you'd like is still more often that most people, I'm guessing," he drawled on in his heavy Chicago accent, offering a shrug. "You know, I knew there was somethin' weird about this town the day I drove in. It just felt odd, you know what I'm saying? But I waved it off as moving to the suburbs when I'm used to the big, dirty streets and... uh, big, dirty extended camping sites."

They trotted over to pick up the merchandise they had set aside while springing into action, Perry taking a long draught from his oversized fountain drink. The ice had started to melt already, but it was still pretty good. "So I guess that's it then. There some kinda gate to Hell in your library, or do you even got any idea what's been going down around here?"

Tony, likewise, was feeling like he had just made a friend. In an amazing, awesome way, too. How often did Tony get to be a hero instead of a victim? Never. Well. Once, now, but before today it had been never. He grinned at Perry, nodding his head a few times.

"Yes, yes," he said, still high on the adrenaline of it all. All that fear and the urge to fight and save some lives was still coursing through him. He grinned, though, just reveling in the fact that they had survived, were unharmed, and they could talk about it. "I seem to have some sort of built in magnet that draws these monsters to me."

He sighed. Usually, though, there was a senshi around to save his butt.

And the rest of him, of course.

"Gate to hell? I don't think so. More like some kind of gaping mouth that vomits these things up. A hell mouth. Yeah, that sounds about right." He sighed, leaning on his cane again. He found he wasn't shaking any more. But, ah, yeah. I do, actually, have some idea what's going on around here. It's been explained to me once." He was being vague, though, not wanting to sell out his senshi friends.

"Lucky you," Perry replied, obviously in a joking tone. He took a large, satisfying bite with his doughnut before gesticulating with the remaining two-thirds of it and continuing, "My magnet doesn't even help me out on fishing trips. Maybe I should take you along next time the weather and I are in the mood, whaddya say?"

And in that second part, he was 100% serious.

A mouth to hell that puked out demons once in a while, that sounded about right -- as much of a naturalist as he was, at this point he wouldn't be surprised if that ended up being the explanation. "Isn't there supposed to be some kind of league of short-skirted demon slayers taking care of these things? If so, they're doing the best job at it."

He kicked at the large dust pile experimentally. It resulted in a dirty shoe. Perry took out another third of his doughnut, frowning a bit as he chewed.

Tony looked puzzled for a moment, then laughed, nodding his head. "Lucky? Oh, yes. I know you're jealous of my magnetism. Though, really, I'm sure there's another sort I'd prefer to draw, over 'monsters'." He sighed wistfully, then shook his head.

"Err," he added quickly, having to clarify, in his mind, so it didn't look like he was talking about fish, "not fish. I think I'm probably more inclined to drive them off then draw them in. Also, I tend to fall out of boats."

He grinned, though, thinking that if Perry had some good life preserving gear in his possession, and knew how to swim, going fishing might not be a bad idea. He had never done it, not legitimately anyway, and it would be interesting to try.

His grin faded a bit at Perry's next statement, his mind turning over the idea of senshi and their duties. The dangers they were constantly in. He watched Perry, then looked down at the dust they had left of the former youma.

"What if we were a group of demon slayers? Granted, we'll have to forego the short skirts, but what if we... ah... did something? To help. To... I don't know." He rubbed the back of his head. It was something he had been thinking about doing for a while now, though he didn't know what that something was. He just wanted to help the senshi, to protect human lives. He wanted to keep innocent people safe, and in that help keep the senshi themselves safe as they risked themselves. He wanted to watch over them, show them that not everyone thought they were terrorists, that there were people willing to do whatever they could.
