Akil’s smile widened when his mistress seemed pleased and his tail flicked playfully as he continued his task. He was struggling with one tiny stain on the floor.

“Omari, miss…? No, I don’t believe I have.” Haqikah’s tone had changed and Akil ‘s paws stopped moving as he turned to face his mistress with serious expression. “You can ask anything of me, miss.”

He straightened up and tried to appear more formal and worthy of whatever request his mistress had in mind. The young slave desperately wanted to prove himself and to become a slave Haqikah would trust and rely on.

He seemed so genuine, so honest, and it absolutely fascinated Haqikah. If she could learn to do that... But the trick was that this slave really wore his heart on his sleeve, and that he was completely honest. A fact she was determined to use even if she didn’t fully understand how and why he did it. Omari was still a sore thorn in her paw, even if she would never admit that he had really hurt her. Revenge was the only way she could ever feel better about it, but since the b*****d had a higher social standing she would have to be discrete about it. A lady should at least seem to be above petty revenge.

"I'm glad," she said, gazing through her makeshift window again, "This hound... he could be dangerous... and I'm glad you've never met him. I've seen what he does to his slaves when he thinks no one is watching. And I'm wondering... I'm wondering if he wouldn't do the same to another hound if he had the chance."

Slave abuse wasn't necessarily something that put a hound in bad standing, but Haqikah had always been told that taking it to the extreme was just bad taste. A hound hearing this information passed on might not rise an eyebrow, but it would put most slaves on edge. A tiny part of her plan to make others see Omari as the scum he really was... even if he probably didn't whip his slaves much more than others in his profession. Truth wasn’t most important here, right now she just needed her slave to believe her and to dislike the b*****d as much as she did.

“Omari from Zanzibar. I’ll remember that name, miss.” The young slave said seriously as he resumed his task, narrowed eyes fixed on the floor. He didn’t quite understand why Haqikah was telling him this but she took her warning – at least he saw it as a warning – to heart. Omari from Zanzibar was a dangerous hound and he hoped their paths would never cross. He truly believed that.

“The authorities won’t allow him to harm another hound, miss.” Akil said slowly, his paws stopping for a moment. Was Haqikah afraid of this hound? The mere thought was enough to bristle his entire body from neck to tail. “And he certainly wouldn’t have any luck in this house even if he tried. Nuri and I will never let anything like that happen to you, miss. Do you… believe he might come here?”

He had broken the no-more-questions rule he had placed upon himself but the slave got the impression that something was bothering his mistress and that this hound – who she might know a little better than she should - was bad news. He was determined to make sure this Omari wouldn’t get anywhere near his mistress as long as Akil was around.

Haqikah liked the reaction she was getting so far, but she figured this was something that was better built up over time. She had made a good foundation today and she'd continue building on it later. This loyal slave would surely serve her purposes perfectly in this and other tasks.

"Oh, I hope you are right," she said, sticking to the 'lady in distress'-act. You never knew when it would come in handy next and she couldn't risk getting rusty, "I don't think he'll come after me, even if I do know a bit more about his so called business than what might be good for me. If I could only warn others of his dishonesty somehow..."

She sighed, but then started to evaluate her own actions. Perhaps gazing longingly would have been less melodramatic than a sigh? Oh well, she gazed longingly out the window, waiting for a reaction from her servant. Better to make these small aesthetic mistakes in her performance in front of a servant. In the end he was a tool, and there were more tools in the box if she ruined this one.

Akil looked visibly troubled now as he avoided his mistress’ gaze. He felt quite powerless to interfere in the affairs of Hounds and while he wished to be soothing, he wasn’t quite sure what to say in this case. And he did not like to make false promises.

“Well, mistress, this is your home. You will always be safe here.” He glanced sideways to Haqikah, speaking with a confidence he didn’t truly possess. “And if Omari from Zanzibar ever comes to town, you’ll be the first to know, miss. I’ll make sure of that.”

It was pretty much all he could think of doing. Inquire about the hound amongst the city’s slaves and maybe ask around for a warning should this Omari show up unexpectedly. Inside Haqikah’s home, Akil was prepared to be fairly aggressive should the need to protect his mistress arise. Other than that, there wasn’t really much he could do and he was painfully aware of it.

Excellent! Her spur of the moment idea seemed to be a real success. She would have to touch the subject of her former mate sooner or later, and this had been good practice. Slaves were usually dumber than the average hound, and she would have to use other tactics later, but still. The lady in distress act never disappointed, and it had been extremely useful in her life up to this point.

"That's such a relief to hear," she said, "Thank you for your kind words."

It seemed as if her little slave intended to do what he could to protect her from this "threat" too. Haqikah was curious to see what he’d come up with, and pleased that he showed some initiative. Good choice that one, now if only the dark slave would return with some kind of pesticide... She'd need to have a private chat with the girl slave at some point to test her mettle too, but it could wait. First they would need to get Haqikah's place in order. If she had to live in a mud hut it should at least be the best looking mud hut in the city!

"Go outside and meet her," she ordered, "It can't take much longer to fetch some herbs..."

“Do you mean Nuri, miss?” Akil smiled at the mistress’ words feeling somewhat accomplished and promptly looked for a place to store the rag before he moved towards the door at a quick pace. “Yes, mistress. I’ll help her carry everything back.”

And after a quick bow, the young slave left the hut and tasted the pleasant breeze and warmth of the sun for a few seconds before he moved forward to find the dark female slave who he now shared the house with.
