Aeto had heard about the princess' flowers and agreed that it was a good way to get the child to keep busy with something. He carried her through the halls to the garden, passing his wife, who smirked and chuckled, glad to see her husband not being cranky.
He rolled his eyes at her and continued on the way till he sat the princess on her feet in the garden. He smiled fully at the statement of love even though it pained him a little.
"All right, now get some flowers for me and we'll get to your counting lesson."

"I get you lots and lots of fl'wers!" Thali answered, before hurrying off to provide him with flowers. She decided to give him the prettiest ones of her set. Of course she course zinnias, five of them, and six double daisies. She had to reach up high to get a handful of jasmine flowers, and she took a stem of lily of the valley, too.
"Look, Unca! I got lots and lots of flowers!" She went to him, putting a pansy in her hair. "Look, look!" She placed the flowers on the ground in front of him. "I picked em all for you!"

Aeto looked at the flowers with a warm smile and sat them next to him before taking one and laying it in front of the princess for her lesson.
"How many roses do you have in front of you, princess?"
He figured using the flowers to help with her addition would work better than writing the problems down and making her do them.
"Thank you for the flowers, little one. They are very pretty."

Thali studied the flower in front of her before smiling. "One!" she said, sure she was right. She knew how to count, all the way to three. Three was a really big number, she knew it was. The biggest number of all!
Yes, using flowers or any tangible object was a good way to teach the toddler princess. She was a hands-on learner really, and learned by doing rather than reading about things and writing. She liked to be able to do something; which was one of the reasons she liked to explore so much. She wanted the experience.
"Welcome!" Thali said, smiling brightly. "You keep em, kay? I picked em juss for you!"

Aeto laughed, "Correct, little princess." He placed another flower, a jasmine this time next to the one in front of her.
"How many flowers do you have now if you add one flower to the one you have already?"
He hoped to teach her to count up to ten at least before her next test and the flowers would be handy that way. She reminded him of Leirre very much since his daughter used to love learning from him, especially if he used shiny stones for their math lessons.
"I will, princess. I'll have Acacia find a vase for them."

"Two!" Thali said gleefully. She liked this game. Would they count all the way to three? Three was by far her favorite number, it came after two, which meant Thali would be three soon. That was an exciting thought for the toddler.
"And you keep em forever? And ever?" Thali asked, interestedly. "I know count to three," she added, attempting to be helpful. "I count bery high!" She paused, and clapped her hands together to express her happiness. "We count bery high together."

Aeto chuckled, "Very good, it is two." Part of him glad that she thought it was a game instead of a lesson.
"Now how many flowers do we have when I add another flower to the two?"
He knew a spell that could make the flower live longer than normal, but he could page press the flower to keep them lovely and in good conditon.
"Yes." He couldn't help smiling at her excitement.

"Three!" Thali gave a delighted giggle. "Three, three!" This game was going well! Making sure to be careful of the flowers, she climbed into Aeto's lap, and leaned against him. "I good at counting," she told him confidently, making herself comfortable.
"Unca Aeto?" she asked, when her excitement had died down a bit. "I be your baby, kay? So you no be sad. I be your baby, and it be our sec'ret."

Aeto nodded, "Good job, little one." She seemed good at counting, but they were going to go past three. "You are very good at it."
"Now how many flowers do we have when I add one flower to the three flowers?"
He looked at him with a smile, "All right, if that is your wish, princess."

"I know," Thali said smugly, which tended to be one of her favorite princessy motives. "I bery good at countin'." She paused, and her smile faded. She stared at the flowers for a moment. There was a bigger number than three? That wasn't right! Aeto was cheating!
It wasn't fair. Not fair at all. Still, she would try. What had Papa said came after three? "Five?" she asked. "Six? Seven? Ten?"

Aeto knew she would have trouble with anything above three when it came to counting, but her next math test was about counting up to ten in addition.
He smiled, "Higher than three, lower than five."

"Four?" Thali guessed, with no confidence. Still, it made her feel better that Aeto wasn't getting upset that she had gotten the answer wrong. "Eleven? Twelve? Ninety?" She leaned against him and pouted. "No fair," she complained. "No one tell me ever that there bigger numbers than three. No fair."
It wasn't fair at all, but she was lying. She knew about some of the numbers, which was why she knew to name them when guessing.

Aeto chuckled softly, "Yes, it is four, princess. Good job."
Getting upset over a wrong seemed like something that might make teaching her harder, so he was staying calm and seeing if she would learn better than if he yelled at her.
He added another flower to the four, "How many flowers do we have when we add one flower to the four flowers we have already?"

"Five?" Thali guessed. She had said that number before, and Aeto had said five was higher than four, so it must have been that. The princess wouldn't have admitted it, but Aeto had been on her scary list for quite sometime. When he had gotten angry at her--
Nevermind. He was nicer now, and that was all that mattered. He was her uncle Aeto. "And then six," the toddler added, via a guess. "Then eight, right? Eight fl'wers affer six?"

Aeto nodded when she said and grinned when she guessed that six came after five. She was indeed very smart when she wasn't having a tantrum....
It was hard to deal with her during those times, especially teaching history. He might have a temper as Acacia did call him her hothead of a husband.
"No, princess, the number that comes after six is lower than eight."
