"A-ha. She is very talented as well, then," Aodh nodded. He turned his head to see his son escorting a smaller boy toward the pair. That was never a good sign, considering the things Niven knew and little boys should not. He smiled to them as they grew closer, even offering a little wave to the smaller of the pair.

When Leslie asked his question, Niven shook his head and rolled his eyes although he was smiling. Leave it to a child to ask something so simply. If he had never met Guin, it was possible that he wouldn't know what Heralds were, let alone Aodh. He took it upon himself to clarify.

"Did you find him outside and give him something?" he asked, and glanced toward Leslie's wings, "A guitar, maybe?"

“Thank you,” he responded after a moment of hesitation. The compliment made Alois pleased, even when Brynn was not with him to hear it—even when they had not physically seen each other in years. In fact, it had been a while since she had last sent him a postcard. His eyes briefly glazed over. He wondered how she was doing.

“Am I a Herald?” Leslie repeated in an impatient, demanding tone while his guardian continued to warily eye the small boy.

“I’m afraid I can’t answer that question,” he insisted. Then Alois turned his attention to the older lad that accompanied Leslie. “Outsi---Oh. Oh, yes, I did give someone my sister’s old guitar.” He pursed his lips, recalling the fallen messenger. “They don’t exactly look like Leslie though.”

It was Aodh's turn to pipe in, and he laced an arm around the back of the bench.

"Genderless, long white hair, laying on some street or field and doubly ill?" he asked, giving a little nod, "If so, I would bet he is a Herald. I gave Niven there one of my old novels, and look at him now." Perhaps the better person to ask would be Guin, considering her extensive research. He'd be sure to pass on her number.

Niven just smiled down at Leslie and shrugged. Did it really matter after all? He was sorry for having brought it up if it did, but race wasn't very important on a place like Gaia.

“I—Y-Yes, that seems to match,” confirmed Alois, startled by his sudden yet amazingly-accurate description of the figure he had met. However, when he gestured at Niven and further explained his answer, the student nodded understandingly. “I see.” He gripped his violin and carefully slid it next to his side before leaning forward to examine the brunette Herald’s wings. He could clearly see the influences of a novel in his wings. Most of it was tan, old paper that appeared to have red splotches on it. Alois frowned, preferring not to linger on that particular observation.

He glanced at Leslie, then at his watch. “Yes, I guess Leslie is a ‘Herald’.” Alois furrowed his eyebrows, curious about the term. “Though it’s probably time for me to leave now.”

Niven arched a brow at his father, who seemed equally as surprised by the sudden statement. Most people would want to stay an talk about what that meant, wouldn't they? Alois was an interesting character, that was for sure. Aodh, a bit more tactful than his son, smiled and offered a hand.

"It was nice to meet you, Alois. I'm sure we'll be seeing each other again," he said. It was strange, how it seemed to happen that way. He had certainly met his share of Heralds on the street.

Niven and Aodh may have been surprised, but Leslie was not. He had quickly picked up on his guardian’s introverted personality and although he understood the sudden exit, the small boy clearly disapproved. As Alois stood up and leaned over to grab the handle of his violin case, Leslie frowned and latched onto the man’s free arm.

“Alois doesn’t like talking! Sorry,” Leslie attempted to explain, earning him a disapproving stare.

“Likewise,” he agreed briefly before tugging along the guitar herald. “Perhaps we’ll meet again soon.”
