Kenachi paused in his preening and then sighed. It was as if he had just received some sort of unspoken order. "Wait here. If our elder chooses to allow you to join us you will be granted an audience." He said, his expression showing his boredom. "Thank y-" She was cut off by his sudden departure. The gale force wind he stirred up knocked her on her backside, a sharp pain making her cry out. Son of a b***h! She cursed to herself. Hopefully she never met Kenachi again! He was such a pain in her a**, pun intended. Sitting up she got to her feet and paced, awaiting her verdict.

The waiting was killing her. Jae had remained pacing. It had been hours, or what felt like hours. At least let me know what's going on! Stupid Kenachi! She was tired, scared and was feeling anxious. This waiting was not good for her. She needed to be moving, being productive, something!

After what seemed like days, finally she heard something that indicated that she was not alone. The rustling of wings and the settling on branches all around her caused her to pause, mid step. She was transfixed, her attention upward. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end when she heard the loudest wooshing of them all behind her. Turning slowly she looked up and into the large eyes of the summons of the bird clan, the elder. Her heartbeat started to race and she fought with the fight or flight feeling she was sensing. Going to one knee she bowed her head in recognition. "Thank you for meeting me." Jae said, her nerves causing her voice to sound so small. Other birds watched the scene, the entourage fidgeting as she addressed their leader. "We have decided, after much debate and Kenachi speaking on your behalf." Hearing a scoff from somewhere to the right Jae stood up and looked directly at the firey bird. He scoffed at her, trying to hide his embarrassment. "Anyone who can withstand my flames without flinching is by no means a weakling." The large owl summons chuckled, Jae returning her attention to it. "Yes, indeed. We have decided that anyone who can stand toe to toe with Kenachi's temper deserves a chance but you must answer one question. What is freedom to you?" Blinking in confusion she thought about it, one thing coming to mind. "Freedom is the chance to do what I can when I can to protect those who I care about." The birds all flapped their wings in unison, content with her answer. The large owl summons nodded it's head. "We are more than happy to add you to our clan. You may call on us whenever you need assistance and we will be more than happy to protect your freedom." With that they all took off, the wind they kicked up causing her to close her eyes and cover her face. As soon as they came they were gone. Jae smiled and jumped into the air, elated with her new accomplishment. "Oh shoot! Samuru!" She needed to hurry or she would miss his trial. With that she was off, the new bird sage.

A type of heaviness was lifted off of Jae's shoulders the moment she found herself in the Bird clans territory. Her hear fluttered slightly, as if on par with the flapping of wings that were headed toward her now. That feeling, however, was instantly frozen over, her emotions stilling and settling into the cold block of ice she felt herself turning into. Currently Jae didnt have anything in her to react. Her scowl was becoming more and more permanent. "Please dont ask..." Jae said, her gaze moving upward over her head and staring up into the eyes of her beloved friend Karu. He was the one of the elite summons in the bird lands. Karu's wide eyes seemed to sadden as he swiveled his head in one odd angle to look her over. "I didn't intend tooooo." He said, playing around with her. She looked away from him, taking a step forward. Karu shrunk then, down to a miniature size and perched on her shoulder as she trekked through the bird lands. "Why are yoooooou here?" He asked her, Jae pausing momentarily to look around her. Her pink hair threatened to knock Karu off her should with each turn of her head. "I want sage mode. I need to become stronger. So I will train here." She said, her tone flat. Jae had a death wish, that had not changed but in the meantime she would become strong and with that strength there would be more of a chance for her to get herself killed. Karu was silent, not responding right away. He was a very wise bird and utilized that wisdom on his own terms and time. "They told me to come and get you today..." Karu said, his voice unusually low and coherent. "They are not content that one of their own fledglings has been left without a flock to fly with and no mate to bind with." Karu said, looking at Jae as she faltered mid step. It felt like the air was being sucked from her lungs. So even the leaders of this clan knew her story. "Take me to them." She demanded, her expression never changing. Karu seemed to wither into himself a little before nodding and taking to the sky.

As he rode higher up he shifted, growing larger. With lazy strokes of his wings he led the way, Jae jogging to keep up with him. With each pump of her legs the burn that came from it seemed to distract her. Already the training had begun without her even noticing it. Faster and faster she pushed herself, Karu's shadow always staying slightly ahead of her. Even though her lungs felt like burning apart she continued to run, finally catching up to Karu's shadow. Directly underneath him it looked as if she had a pair of large black wings flapping as she sprinted along to keep up. Reaching her limit she began to slow down when Karu flapped his wings once and dropped to her shoulder, shrunken down to mini size already. Jae leaned forward, hands on her knees as she caught her breath. "Here?" She spat out, still breathing heavily after the long run.

There was nothing but empty fields around her as far as the eye could see, cept for one smaller detail. A small spring that was fed by no lake, river or even mountain trickle. More than likely it was a spring fed from underground water. Turning to look at Karu on her shoulder she gave him an expecting glance. He shrugged his tiny shoulders and Jae let out a small puff. Going to the spring she looked into the aquamarine water and tried to see to the bottom of said spring. The water was clear but it grew darker and darker shades of aqua and blue before turning black and continuing one and on as the water got deeper and deeper. It was a never ending pool of water. "What now?" Jae whispered, her icy blue eyes transfixed on the pool of water. "You train." A gentle voice said, sweeping over Jae and causing her to slip her hand into her pouch and produce a kunai. Pivoting she faced the person who had come up behind her suddenly. Before her were two very odd looking creatures. They resembled birds and retained humanoid figures. Long wings were pinned to their sides, giving them regal looks. One had vibrant colors of bronze and red plumage with white sprinkled here and there and the other, the darker one had nothing but black feathers. It was this one that drew Jae's attention the most. There was a mysterious darkness to the creature. There were three eyes instead of two on it's face, the middle eye closed. The flowing robes they wore masked their bottoms, legs and chest area, Jae swearing on all the gods she knew that the black one had three legs and the bronze one had a odd looking tail curled around her. "It's rude to raise a weapon against those who would try to assist you, fledgling." The female said, her golden orange eyes glowing slightly.

Her fingers clutched the kunai tighter, Jae not relenting her grip for a second before she pondered through who these strange and alien creatures were. They are going to be the ones to train me? She asked herself, her uncertainty showing on her facial features. The black bird seemed to stare into her very soul as she debated whether or not to back into a more relaxed position. Karu nudged her cheek in reassurance, Jae letting her guard drop in response. Putting the kunai away she kept the two in her sights, the spring behind her now as she watched them warily. "You fear us?" The female asked, coaxing her head in an angle that Jae was starting to coralate as a bird thing. "I dont know you." The bronze one chuckled, moving then. Jae circled, keep her in front of her at all times while simultaneously keeping track of the black one as well. "You were looking for us, how is it you dont know us? Cant you feel it inside of you?" She asked, watching Jae with amusement. Jae tried to calm her racing heart for a second. What was she feeling? Unease and nervousness, yes but unfamiliarity. "You can train me then?" Her question was rhetorical of course.

Both birds nodded in unison. Jae glancing from one to the other. Jae seemed to relax a fraction of an inch. "What do I need to do?" Jae asked, her gaze intense now. Both bird creatures looked to one another, silently communicating. "First names are in order...then we tell you just how futile this training will be." Jae tensed, narrowing her gaze.

Seated by the pool, on the rim, with her back facing the abyss Jae stared at her two instructors. Karu had shuffled off of her shoulder and was settled beside her, having enlarged himself so that he was now the size of a large eagle. "So let me get this straight...If I dont do this training right my life is forfeit?" Jae reiterated, having been explained by the pair of bird sages that training to utilize the natural energy required to enter into sage mode was dangerous. There was a 75% percent chance she would be unable to fully grasp the technique required. Incredible chakra stamina was needed and while Jae was strong she was not the strongest out there...yet. This did not deter the kunoichi. She was past worrying about trivial things like death. "You dont strike me as one who has the will of a chicken." Yatagarasu said, her voice holding a mocking tone. Jae did not take the bait and merely looked past her. "Let's get this over with." Jae responded, sitting up straighter and folding her legs in, as if getting ready to enter a meditative state. Itsu' as Jae had come to know him because of Yatagarasu's pet name for him, had finally moved, looking to Jae now. His glowing eyes were fixated on her. His voice was low and even as he took over. "You are going to be using natural energy around you. It exists in everything around you. It is an extension of the chakra of living things and can be melded to your own chakra if done properly. This 'boost' will give you the power you need to be able to enter sage mode and resonate with us..." Yatagarasu spoke then, settling next to her mate. She coaxed her head once again and smirked. "If you fail.....you will petrify. A bird with clipped wings cannot fly. You will become exactly that and the bird clan cannot let it's fledglings suffer in a world grounded. You will be pushed into the abyss behind you." Yatagarasu explained. Karu shuffled nervously then. "You dont have to do this Jae. It is a huge risk and it is a huge gamble." Jae looked to Karu and away quickly, feeling guilty for the way she had been acting to him. "There....is no going back for me now. Nowhere for me to turn to. I have to do this or die trying." It was the first slip of anything she had shown, the melancholy in her expression quickly replaced with fierce determination. Itsu' shifted his feet and then looked to Karu. "You get three attempts, Jae Ketsueki. Karu can only bring you back from petrifying three times. If you cannot do it after that there is nothing we can do to save you." Karu took the raven colored feather produced from Itsu'. Grasping it in his beak the bird stood ready beside her.

Jae was not afraid but was nervous. This could be the end for her...Hopefully he will be there waiting for me on the other side... Jae thought to herself, closing her eyes and waiting for the simple instructions she was going to be given. Yatagarasu moved closer to Jae and flapped her wings sharply in the girls direction. A powdery substance coated Jae then, the girl snapping open her eyes and glaring at the bird creature. "Oh hush. It's just powder to help you feel the natural energy around you more easily." Jae paused and tried to see if she felt anything different in the air around her. It's humming... She mused to herself, her blue eyes showing her monumental awe.

Now that the powder was in effect, Itsu' instructed Jae to stand. Confused, the girl got to her feet. She had never undergone any training of this sort so was not sure what was going to happen next. "Every summons, every clan, has a different way to train for sage mode. The bird clan thrives in the sky so we feel natural energy more easily from the skies and things that thrive on the wind." Jae stared at Itsu' knowing she wasn't going to like this part as much. Karu nudged Jae foward after activating his own Jutsu. "What Master Itsu' is saying is that you need to be airborne to do this." He instructed, Jae nodding once and kicking off the ground. She hovered for a second, her anatomy against the very notion of being airborne before she was able to soar higher. All three bird members opened their wings and shot to the sky, the hovered where Jae was stopped, watching her with their shinning eyes. "What do I do now?" She asked, excited to begin now. "You are going to draw in the natural energy around you while staying airborne." He instructed, Jae looking at him with disbelief. It's that easy? Yatagarasu chuckled lightly. "It's not as easy as it looks, fledgling..." She muttered, flapping her wings lazily. Jae understood what the bird was implying. Jae was human. Flying was not a part of her and it was a million time harder for her to stay afloat. Even with the jutsu active it required all of her strength to stay airborne. Muscles, tendons, everything was moving to stay upward. It was a strain on the body that was very unnatural and not only was she required to stay airborne but now she was supposed to focus and pull in natural energy from around her without falling out of the sky like a rock? Spoke to soon... She thought to herself, nodding once as Itsu' motioned for her to attempt her first trial of concentration.

Closing her eyes she became in sync with the air around her. She felt it underneath her and she felt it wrap around her, threatening to push her in the direction that it wanted to flow in. Her body was an obstacle and a few times she slipped out of her concentration when she was pitched forward by a strong gust of wind. "Feel the power around you. The energy...it feels a little like the drone a humming bird makes." Karu advised her, the owl staying on standby in order to assist her should she dip too deeply into the natural energy. Jae took a deep breath and tried to feel the same humming she had felt when Yatagarasu had first coated her in the powdery substance. Jae's hair pitched forward and then flickered in the opposite direction in accordance to the wind. Nothing happened at first, Jae feeling like this was going to be beyond her. It wasnt easy, staying afloat and then trying to find and draw the energy toward her. It was hard.

What. The. ********> This was not working out how she wanted it to. Jae couldnt even worry about failing if she couldnt even start drawing the energy. Hell! She couldnt even sense the damn stuff around her. It was like trying to grasp onto something invisible. More than naught she was reaching for thin air like an idiot. Vexed beyond all senselessness she let out a growl, opening her eyes and setting her icy gaze on Itsu and Yata."There is no energy! I dont feel anything! I cant even draw that in if I cant sense it!" She was restless and her anger was skin deep. This was beyond logic. Natural energy? It made no sense. How did you use other energy that wasnt yours, let alone pull it to yourself? She was by no means a sensor or graced with Doujutsu abilities. Her power was inside of her. Something that came out not went in. This was a million times harder for her to comprehend than for others, she would assume. "You are thinking too much. Stop trying to think." Jae almost snarled at Yata but stopped short when Itsu eyed her sternly. The dark bird crow, creature, seemed to freak her out a bit. Even despite Yata's wyren like body. "Just 'feel' the energy. It hums. Its inside of you, me, Karu, the other clans, other summons, animals and plants. It's 'life' in a sense. You have to allow yourself to feel outside of your current self. It means opening up to the world and letting it in." Feel? Jae couldnt feel.

Maybe that was why this wasnt not coming along. She was numb and continued to feel that way. Samuru's death had made her life meaningless. There was no reason for her to have to feel anything. There was no joy in it. There was no satisfaction nor fear nor worry... Just a blank slate of nothing. Now she was required to feel and not only just feel but everything around her? "Easier said than done..." Jae closed her eyes and tried once more. Itsu watched her and then glanced at Yata. She nodded once, silently agreeing with an idea he had thought up. "It's said....if you can feel the natural energy you can even sense imprints left behind of things, animals and people." Jae's breath caught in her throat, the kunoichi losing all focus as she stared at her sensei. Sense imprints of energy? Like...memories..? Would she be able to sense the imprints of Samuru? Would it remind her of him? Would she feel him around her if she could? That small dizzying conclusion seemed to motivate her a bit. She concentrated on sensing the energy around her by letting go of her mental restraints. Slowly she began to feel the humming that Karu had explained to her. Yata grinned, it was time to move on to the next step.

Gritting her teeth, Jae now practiced drawing the 'humming' energy toward her. Yata and Itsu' had shown her, had explained to her how to feel the energy, to sense it. Now they were trying to explain to her how to draw it in but the explanations were poor. "It's like sending out an extension of yourself to touch the energy around you." Itsu explained, flapping his wings rapidly in agitation. "Kinda like sending out your own energy to merge with it around you and then pulling it toward you." A light sheen of sweat marred Jae's brow. It was taking all of her concentration just to keep track of all of the massive amounts of energy swirling around her. It was humming so much she could feel it in her bones now. It was uncomfortable and it was making it even harder to keep herself airborne. "Jae. Like taking a deep breath. Pull the energy toward you. Let it come inside of you just like you are doing naturally when you take a breath of air." Karu advised, both Itsu and Yata glancing at him with irritated expressions. "It's not coming toward me!" She let out with a hiss. Breathe it in? What the hell was that even supposed to mean? She took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down.

It was imperative that she get this part down. Draw it in. It's in everything. It's the essence...etc. Breath it in... She took a breath and felt the humming stirring more rapidly around her. Her energy reacted inside of her, humming in response. Draw it in towards you... She recited, taking another breath and feeling the humming in her bones start to vibrate at higher speeds. Her fingers twitched, the pink haired kunoichi opening her eyes to look at her instructors. "I think I understand how it works now..." Jae muttered, a little overwhelmed at the moment. Itsu seemed pleased, as did Yata but Karu was vividly agitated. His wings fluttered oddly as he stayed afloat. "Now you actually begin the hardest part of it all. Are you ready? With your life on the line?" He asked her. Looking at all three birds she nodded slowly, her determination ebbing once more.

Hissing through her teeth, Jae glared at her mentors. When she had tried to draw the natural energy into her Itsu had flown right into her gut, Jae clenching her already wounded body in order to protect it from another spontaneous assault. "What the hell was that about!" She snarled, looking to Karu expectantly. The bird was as shocked as she was. "You were drawing the energy in incorrectly from the beginning. Remember! You only have three chances of being brought back. We cannot help you past that and your life will be on the line." Jae was panting now, her body angry at her callous attempts at trying to push it past the limit. She sighed and then closed her eyes, trying to focus on her task. She felt the energy all around her now, the humming intense. It vibrated in her bones and she could swear she felt it in the nerves of her teeth as well. This energy was ripe for the picking, so said her trusty mentors. The trick was pulling in enough amounts of it to enter her sage mode. This was the problem. Drawing it in was not going to be so easy. In fact. Obviously no matter what way she tried it just wasnt happening. When she thought she had finally found a way to draw it in correctly Itsu had rammed into her stomach and tried to exit through her spleen.

Slowly she fiddled around with this 'energy' that was ripe for the picking. It's an extension of everything around me....so maybe... She raised her hand and held her palm out as if she were reaching for something. Closing her fist slowly she pulled in her arm. The energy she had felt she was 'calling' to it. She was trying to become more like the wind around her and flowing with the energy instead of against or trying to mold it to her. She just wanted to join it. That was all. The natural energy around her began to stir. It reacted to her attempts at drawing it in and slowly gathered with her call. At first the humming intensified greatly and then it began to feel different. The energy began to mesh with Jae's own charka, making her feel less fatigued, less anxious and more powerful. More of it entered and like a funnel it began to pour into her with a rush. Suddenly Jae felt something brush against her cheek. It was feathery to the feel and the beaded clicks of the ornaments attached to the adorned heirloom caused her to open her eyes as the energy left her all at once. Karu was shaken, the owl holding the respective item in his beak as all three watched her carefully.

Failure. It was something she was used to in training. Things did not happen easily for her. They never had. Working harder than everyone else was something she had mastered and perfected. Closing her eyes, she let out another sigh. Itsu had explained to her what happened during transformations. Her eyes became less human like and more bird, taking on the properties of birds of prey. Feathers grew on her arms and the nape of her neck, continuing to cover her body the more and more natural energy she drew into herself in order to sync with their power. After the most extreme of physical transformation of her physical features she would then begin to petrify. Something that happened to every single sage in any clan should they attempt this past their ability. Jae was ready to try again and did not wait for prompting to begin. Closing her eyes she drew the energy toward her once more, trying not to become overwhelmed by it again. It was hard. The power was intoxicating and knowing when to stop was hard. Her body, which felt so heavy before became lighter in an instant. It felt so much lighter, so much so that she continued to draw in more and more power.

'Cling cling'. The feather against her cheek and the beads clicking together brought her out of her trance. Two for two so far. Both ending in failures. Her body felt heavy once again and she sagged a bit, dropping a fraction of an inch in the sky. It was getting harder and harder to stay hovering in the air and it was getting harder and harder to want to return to her human state. "As much as the bird clan considers you a human, Jae Ketsueki, you are not made like us. You cannot allow your body to mold to what the natural energy dictates you should be like. Do not lose your form to it." Yata warned, her body slithering behind her while her wings beat in a lazy fashion, one that made Jae envious. "Easy for you to say...." It was a small display of jealousy that Jae held toward the beautiful bird like creature. She was stunning, powerful and avian. Three things Jae was clearly not. Jae was at her last attempt, she would have to draw caution this time.

Taking a slow breath Jae let herself ease into this mode once again. Yata had sprinkled her in the dressing of the powdery crap that allowed her to get more in sync with the natural energy around her. Her breathing relaxed and even though she felt fatigued from staying in the flying position she was in, Jae was ready to attempt this for hopefully the last time. She drew the energy into herself, letting it flow through her and into her. It was like the wind that licked at her exposed body parts. It was cool but burned her at the same time. Her cheeks flushed as she was infused with more and more chakra. Letting out a breath from between her clenched teeth she opened her eyes. They were changing from an intense blue color to one that was more honey in color with random flecks of blue standing out in her irises. The pupils had turned into eerie slits, much resembling those belonging to a bird of prey. Feathers grew at the nape of her neck, their color an outstanding shade of light and dark blue mingled together. Jae was slipping now, reaching the point where she either over indulged in the energy or couldnt sustain it. Clenching her teeth she tried to keep herself in line but felt herself getting greedy, despite her mental protests. She had no real will power and it was starting to effect her training. N-no! Stop drawing in so much energy! She commanded herself. Karu began to grow restless, raising the large feather with beads attached to it. Jae turned her gaze on him, glaring openly. "DONT! I can control it!" She snapped, being wary. Her heart beat had accelerated to an abnormal rate, Jae stopping her suction of the energy around her from nature. She felt so light and filled with dizzying power.

Closing her eyes she allowed herself a moment to get used to this feeling of being so energized. The energy had fused with her chakra, giving her the boost she needed to sync with Yata and Itsu'. "How do you feel?" He asked her, his gaze resting on her. Yata fluttered her wings uncomfortably once and the twice, waiting for Jae to respond. Obviously patience was not in the large birds usual daily activities. "I think...I did it. I am not sure." Opening her eyes she stared at her mentors, waiting for them to pass their judgement and then instruct her on the next and final step to completing her training.
