HI Sabrina! biggrin biggrin Yea, sure! Anything welcome! @ MirelstormePhyllis (dudeIkeepforgettingyou'renotMirelstormanymore)-- TREASON! > smile You know which character I'm talking about. But I like her. Arson, vandalism (I doubt anyone would like graffiti on the world gov't building.....but that's not exactly dangerous, is it?) um...terrorist attacks...perjury (iono if they would actually go to jail themselves though)....something like that? I'm going to answer to Lyrica's post as systematically as I can: Powers1. If you're really worried about it, her power could be purely mist? And (since you already know about character ability development this won't be weird), the mist could have a bent on healing techniques or shrouding techniques. This makes her a clear defensive fighter though, with a defensive-based power and a medium-long range weapon. Although I hear short bow is actually more of a short-range weapon...iono...:/ 2. Lyrica Pie However, it still strikes me that this entitles: healing, direct draining of energy, endless source of energy, buffing, debuffing, shields, energy attacks, mind-reading and possibly other. And that's just her power. Any ideas on how to balance her out? I like the idea of a path of development, but it seems very sue-ish. You see the problem sad But since half of that requires really sizable amount of proficiency, you could play on the limitations or maybe start with her unable to control her abilities or something? Or... maybe there are things in the "alternate vision" that besiege her there or something? Or maybe her power requires unnaturally vast amounts of energy to work? I think the best thing to do now is to play on the disadvantages side rather than limit the capacities of the power. That's kinda a personal thing though. Like, I think that every power should be able to touch on a little of everything if they were utilized to their maximum potential. But having a character that actually can do that makes them a rather boring Mary Sue/ Gary Stu. So... yea. 3. You could have her require words to work her magic, or have it require another channelling method. Have you seen the show Teen Titans? She reminds me of Jinx now that I think about it. Spellcasting by my definition is kind of like the Eragon-method of magic. (Cast a spell--> energy drained all at once-->spell effect) so maybe that would work? Play with it biggrin Or just make it fit in with your story. 4. Character ability development can play into this as well. Unless he's solely invisibility-spellcasting, I think staying completely masked for a long period of time would be pretty energy-demanding. 5. I think the irony is great at this point. Even though he has the ability to become a huge monster, his personality would probably make him prefer a little creature one instead...I think? Don't worry about it. 6. It is odd. I notice though that you wrote "elemental" before light and earth and "ambient" before water though...Maybe that's a difference in itself worth noting? Snow is so weirdly awesome, 3nodding Weapons1. Personally I think the irony is awesome. Just for kicks, I know a boy in a kung-fu class that does his fan form better than any girl I know. wink And that could be used as a mini-plot device maybe. About range: I would actually say the girls have a greater range advantage. The boys have a longbow, but claws and fan both must be pretty close to attack. Jian (straight sword basically, right?) and staff are pretty close range too, especially jian. The girls have a dagger, but they also have a long spear (I'm guessing you mean like the kind described in Angelic?) that seems like it'd be used like a staff with a point most of the time. But it's still a spear and can be thrown for range. Nine-part chain is also a brilliantly unpredictable weapon that can be used for short-middle ranges. They also have a bow--even if it's a short bow, it's still a bow. That said, they can probably employ magic into their attack as well, which covers pretty well. And what ePhyllis said holds true as well. Having the boys being more support- fighters probably gives another opportunity to work stuff around. Don't worry about the irony of it. It's fun. Ok. I think I've at least briefly touched on all the questions... biggrin

@Silver--=)! Thank you for the very comprehensive reply to our questions!! smile smile
1. Totally didn't think of just mist! That's interesting biggrin
2. Hm. I get why you're saying. I'll get back to you once Tris and I (I'm her "pet editor" heart ) decide on something. But you've given us a lot to think of! smile
3.Jinx! "I'm bad luck." I love her! I think I know what you mean though....
4. Oh that's true of course. Maybe we could start him in the negative, like, unable to control his power in the beginning. Or something...Apply limitations, yes.
5. OK then smile
6. Have you read "The Circle Opens" by Tamora Pierce? I got the idea of "ambient" magic from her series. I think the distinction as I'm using it is more like this:
ambient= uses the existence or presence of water to communicate and extend. And there has to actually be water around him or near him for him to work with it.
elemental= manipulates the element.
So the problem was whether these powers were too broad or strong relative to the other ones.
Weapons--I see...thank you and ePhyllis!! I think we're good with this. biggrin
@Sabrina--Pretty interesting smile Would she be, like...the only main character? Or do you have other major characters? She sounds interesting though... I'm interested in her past, mostly wink

@Sabrina--Cool protagonist! biggrin I like how you described her, lol. "Twig thin...porcilen skin" Just curious--what's she like? Like, personality? Being the last of her kind and all... >.< Of course, I'm just being nosy an you don't have to answer any of that if you don't feel like it biggrin . lol. Also-- just remembered sweatdrop --no surname?
@Lyrica--No problem! About the elemental/ ambient--I'm not sure I know exactly what you mean, but I think I get the gist of it. My suggestion would be to not worry about it. You could always use it as a way to hint that great power doesn't always mean greatness or something like that. Or that someone with a more "specific" power can be equally as strong or stronger. Something like that?
Dudez I am still struggling to find a basic storyline scream So jealous that you guys already have storylines and characters established! stressed I'm happy for you too though! blaugh gonk

LOL Silver. About that. I guess you would've been upset if you knew that I've been considering changing her name recently! razz Okayokayokay, my FAVORITE character used to be Ives or Jule. But now it's Metis, Abel, or Iris smile 'cause they're cool like that.
@Sabrina, I'd also like to hear more.

@Silver--those are all great ideas! Thanks! biggrin
Don't worry! I'm sure you'll find inspiration soon! biggrin ---------------
I am so confused as to where the conversation about ePhyllis's characters has gone, but I'm going to guess that Silver and her know more about this than I will so... biggrin
Jule from Stubborn Souls! And Ives from DiW! haha. I don't like Ives >.< Too tech-smart for me. But Castele says I'm just jealous of Ives's "mad skills" xd ~Tris

She's a moody person lolx. Well she's going to have a last name and everything, but haven't thought of it yet. She's the first main character introduced. There's going to be a man introduced later in the story.

Lol! A significant other maybe?
Moody. Hm. Sure. That's interesting though. Only one of her kind and a moody individual. It makes sense, I guess though.... Say, do the other characters generally know she is an energy vampire? Or are they oblivious to that fact? On that note, what species is the general populace where she lives? Human? (Mmm That's a lot of good hunting then, I suppose)

Posting this up for scrutiny:
Ives (m) Crime: grand theft, involuntary manslaughter (?), wire fraud, computer crime Personality: dorky, gives an impression of “not able to hurt a fly.” Seems talkative, but actually speaks gibberish with little to no thought to the other person’s comments- mostly because he’s extremely shy. However, he is extremely coherent on online chat and email. Appearance: black hair, green eyes, pale skin, height at 6’3”, extremely skinny Age: 20 Detail: He was a hacker self-raised and taught in isolation. His only contact to the outside is the internet. He lives alone. He started hacking simply for entertainment and intellectual gain. His dream is to fly fighter jets.
Jule Oster (f) Crime: manslaughter Personality: loves to pry into other people’s secrets, and often takes it too far. She makes it a hobby to mimic prison personnel and their acquaintances. Inquisitive, without morals, hardly ever takes anything seriously Appearance: N/A: favorite form is a 22 year old girl, 5'7", blonde, shoulder-length curls, blue eyes, pale Age: 24 Detail: She suffers from a particular illness that allows her to change her own genetic makeup - shapeshift into a different person. She can change into most everything she wants (as long as it's still human) for however long she wants. However, she suffers total memory loss once a year at random intervals. She has long forgotten who she was in the first place, and her name is only a borrowed one assigned to her by the government. She loves to take on the form of the prison warden’s dead wife and taunt him about not being able to prevent her death.
Is there anything I should add? --------------- I was also wondering if it's possible to create a "Mary-Sue" kind of prisoner. None of them are incubi/succubi. Um. All of them are in some way guilty of something. Could someone think of an example? :/
haha, doing this made me feel a lot more motivated to complete the rest of the character profiles~! x3 Just a dozen more to go.

Ives, lol!" His dream is to fly fighter jets" That's new, but just so cute!
Jule is guilty of manslaughter >.< She is SO mean..... scream She's not like that in Stubborn Souls though? So mean so mean so mean.
Also, what's her illness called (if it's applicable to humans on Earth)? I tried to look up stuff about it but can't find anything that signifies this illness is even vaguely possible.... >.< It sounds like as a person you're inclined more towards the science fiction than fiction/ fantasy genre and I thought that "Surprise" to be set on a non-magical Earth so.... xd
Mary Sue prisoners.....hm... I'll have to think about that. Well, the way I think of it, a Mary Sue is just someone who gets his/ her way ALL the time, or at least triumphs in whatever he/ she does. Or if everything they do is so predictably messed up that it's not funny after a while. Um..I don't know. Someone like Bella Swan from the Twilight series? (Sorry if anyone likes Twilight! I don't mind the books, I just think Bella is a Mary-Sue >.<) ---------------------------------------------
Silver don't worry! biggrin I might have both characters and plot decided, but I have no idea how I'm going to write it or how I'm going to manage 12+ characters. >. And also--you changed your skin and hair! Whoa. eek

LOL. It's likely that an illness like that isn't possible. I based it off of an existing manga character because I thought it was interesting- the amnesia part. I like reading both magic and science fiction, but I tend to be a lot more picky about magic because a lot of it turns out the same.
ahah. So should I try making up a name for that illness? Does one call that being "diagnosed"? XD
Hm. Okay, so my impression of a Mary-Sue prisoner would be one those "OMG HE/SHE'S SO FREAKIN BAD*SS" kind of person... they can "pwn" anything and they're so cool and attractive and evil and they can do whatever they want, and no one can stop them. It's just power play that kind of results when people are into that "evil is the new cool" thing without thinking about it. Like... perfect, but in an "evil" way. But I guess maybe people wouldn't call that a Mary Sue...
After being holed up in an isolated building all his life, I thought that Ives probably should have some dreams about doing something outside (thus the flying fighter jets). He has access to Youtube and lots of other research material about the outside, but... haha. Maybe he's agoraphobic? Maybe I'll try to add that in.
No, the Jule Oster in Stubborn Souls is a different person from the one in this story (Dog Eat World, DEW). Only the name is the same. I was thinking that since they're supposed to be at a high level prison, and there are less women than men, the women who do survive there should be especially horrible smile jkjk I just wanted to take a crack at creating a really bad person. I think it'll be fun and interesting to write her.

Silver, you'll have a plot figured out gradually! Don't worry sad I don't have much, either.
Same here, Tris. sad 12+ characters. Well, I wish you luck, too... The only nice thing I like about it is that we get to have a lot of variety and things to write about.
That must be difficult, being the only vampire sad It definitely sounds like an interesting subject to write about. So no romance in your story, Sabrina? And thanks >.< I really think it's how dysfunctional my characters are that make them special... other than that, there's nothing really great about them.

Haha wow guys smile
I'm definitely doing NaNoWriMo this year!! Last year I tried it, but I only got 5k words so I definitely have to do better this time biggrin
Right now my story is based on a girl who is washed up on a large island and loses her memory. The island has seven different tribes of people on it, and they fight a lot. But eventually the girl (by travelling through all the tribes) reunites them just in time for them to fight a great threat to the island...
I haven't decided much more detail than that, because I like to let my characters do what they want to the story and then just write it down... (If that makes any sense lol)
