Nikki didn't look the least bit impressed despite the fact that her Pidgeot still had Fly and Quick Attack, nor with Claire's reasoning.
"Most Pokemon start out small and weak," she told the grunt clearly. "Your Pidgeot was a Pidgey once." As was Darkfeather, and she remembered it clearly.
"You're not going to get a strong team if you're not willing to do the work. A strong Pokemon is gained through training." In Nikki's mind, this grunt's logic was critically flawed.
She then looked toward her Torkoal and Eevee. "All right, that's enough." She had seen all of the Torkoal's moves and that was enough for the time being. The two Pokemon relaxed, the Eevee sitting down and waiting for whatever would be next.

Claire paused while looking through the possible attacks on her pokedex, and looked over towards Odette, who was still whipping up sand in the corner. She made a 'hmmn' sound as she mulled over Nikki's statements, which, honestly, had made her quite uncomfortable. A good sort of uncomfortable though, one that reminded her she still had a lot to learn, and a lot to accomplish.
She didn't mention that all of the pokemon she had seen were bug-types. She hated bugs. Ugh. Weak or not, they grossed her out.
She could easily remember the time when Odette was but a tiny little Pidgey, one that could fit on her shoulders and loved to be carried around. Another 'hmm' escaped her as she shifted her weight to her left foot, still watching her golden bird. It made her uncomfortable to have Nikki school her about how ridiculous her logic was - even though the superior Rocket hadn't said it that way, in Claire's mind, that's how it sounded. It made her very uncomfortable, but after a few moments of thought, she relented. It wasn't as if she wasn't willing to do the work, oh no; that's why she was up at 5am every morning and spent most of the day training when she wasn't working. Maybe she'd just phrased it wrong? All pokemon could be trained to be strong, she knew, but some would end up stronger than others due to their individual stats. That's what she'd meant, finding one with above average abilities than one that was very below average. She wanted her pokemon to shine, not glitter like dull little specks of light.
"It seems that," she began, eyes slowly moving off Odette and onto her pokedex in her hands once more, "since I've had only Odette for so long, I've forgotten a few things in regards to new pokemon." That was as close to admitting she was wrong as she would get. Of course, that didn't mean she still wouldn't be more selective about the pokemon she'd try to obtain. "I also realize I have a lot of work to do still. I'll take your advice and teach Odette stronger, more powerful moves, and spend more time searching for more pokemon to add to my team." Her tiny, one-pokemon team. That certainly put it in perspective for her on just how severely limited she was. This would need to be remedied as soon as possible.
She paused then, and switched her pokedex to her left hand before offering Nikki a salute. "I thank you for your advice, I greatly appreciate it."

Nikki continued to regard the grunt skeptically, then just shrugged as Claire spoke and then thanked her. It wasn't really her problem whether the grunt failed to be useful to the team or not. However, she did hate to see a good Pidgeot go to waste. Or any bird for that matter, but especially a Pidgeot.
In the meantime, Darkfeather roused and regarded the conversation with boredom. He didn't care about the pretty princess Pidgeot, and he wasn't sure why his trainer even bothered. There was no Pidgeot better than HIM after all, and there never would be. Darkfeather started preening once more, this time with a sense of self pride.
"We have enough loser grunts around here already, don't make yourself one of them."
And that was that.

At a signal from her trainer, Odette stopped the attack and glided over to the young woman. Claire had gotten an idea into her head, and would follow it until the end. First stop: Her room, to find her TM case to see if she had anything (and if not, to go 'acquire' some new TM's) to teach Odette.
She pulled her bag out once more, putting her pokedex away and pulling out a simple pokeball. Expanding it, she pressed the middle button and the large bird disappeared in a flash of red light before she put it back in the bag and slung it over her shoulder.
As she walked towards the door, Nikki's last comment made her bristle slightly. "Never. I have no intentions of being anything less than the best I can possibly be." And with that, she stepped out the door and headed towards the stairs.
