Traditions! Our school isn't that intense with them XD.

UHM. Our bus rides are normal on the way down, but for the last five minutes before we get to whatever school we're going we have "Quiet Time" to focus. We also have "Shoulders", which is our group huddle/pep talk, and we all have a hand on each other's shoulders.

And each section has their own little thing they do. The saxophones usually get together in a circle, and each person says some word of advice to everyone else. Like "Don't suck" and "Stay in step" and "Have fun." And then we have a handshake that I'm really bad at but we're supposed to do fast and...fast. XD.

And the entire band, last year, was made to learn the Hilshire Farm chant (you know, "Go Meat"?), but that's not so much tradition as an constant, on-running joke.

Every year on the big band trips the Pit and Drumline kids are given a really, reeeeeaally long scavenger hunt list, and it's fun helping them.

I think that's it XD.

Haha thepast 2 years the hillshire farms thing has gone on in my band.
We have "wuiet time" the entire tiemXD

One of our big superstitions is regarding the postgame show. We have one song we play when we win the game, and another we play when we lose. It's super bad luck to play the winning song at any time other than after we've won a football game, so we never rehearse it. Or mention the title.

So last weekend we won the game, and started postgame. Well, due to the lack of rehearsal no one knew when we were supposed to start marching, so everyone was trying to move at different times. I tried to go about five times before I gave up and stayed in my spot. It must have looked terrible.

I think that's kind of a tradition in itself, that we never get the postgame show right. Good thing most people have left by that time...

We have a few traditions in our band.

For the last 15 minutes during the bus ride on our way to a contest, we get silent to really focus on the show. It's also time for us to put the little touches on our uniforms, like our gloves, gauntlets, and hats.

Then, sometime during our music warm-up, our director makes us close our eyes for a minute or two and think about our personal weak points in the show, what we need to focus on, etc.

My personal favorite is when he gives each squad/section a few minutes to talk about thinks to focus on/remember. However, the tubas have a very special tradition, and we sing a song instead (F*** Her Gently by Tenacious D). xD It has nothing to do with the contest whatsoever, but it's our tradition and we don't question it, we just do it.

Oh, and one more little tradition is that our drum majors go around and shake everyone's hand and wishes them good luck. And I think that's about it. C:

Please forgive me.........

We had a tradition that we called "Iron Lungs".. it was amazing. Never before I've seen a group of 20 students finish an entire endurance course in 20 minutes.
There would be two teams, the woodwinds, and the brass.
We'd be placed in this huge competition, seeing if we could beat the other team. The competition consisted of 1 gigantic figure 8, through the gym, taking turns climbing up the ropes and back down (to collect one single flag), running across to the field to grab the flag that hung on the mesh barrier and back to the gym, then we'd race down to the bandroom and search the entire area for the 3rd flag, then we'd run to the stage where we'd rehearse for a concert and try to find the flag there, then to the garden and find the 5th flag.
After we found all 5 flags, we'd then run and hurry up to the roof of the school, where our band director would meet us. He'd have two of the members from the team come up and smash two cymbals together as a sign of the competition ending.
With the end happening, we as a team, would then come down, and get prepared to be sprayed with a hose.
Its an amazing sight, 20 students, pushing themselves past their limits, pulling through with each other as a team. We'd be crying in the end, screaming, and laughing, but not for the pain, but for the joy of the year coming to an end, and a new one rising.
We'd also cheer for the team who didn't win, senior band, we're just a damn tight family. And we find out the true meaning of teamwork, with blood, pain, sweat, and determination, we knew we could accomplish anything.
Afterwards, there would be a party, but the winning team does not celebrate themselves winning, because woodwinds and brass are one team, a team called concert band.
Senior, concert band.
We'd celebrate the memories that we made throughout the years, how our bonds grew tight with each other, and how people we once disliked, become one of our good friends.

But this year, our tradition has come to an end.

Before a contest we pet "Umfufu" the stuffed ram. The flute section goes around linking pinkies and kissing their thumbs for luck (it would make more sense if you could see it), and other sections have their own handshakes and stuff. At the rehearsal before the contest when we're called to gather at the end we all make hissing noises and have a chant that the drum majors initiate.

The trumpet section (my section) gets in an circle before we put on our uniforms and practice Salvation is Created (our warm-up song for contest and what we play when we win.) We've done it each time this year and we just had our first competition yesterday and one every award in it

Well, for clarinets, we used to do the "clarinet mating call" (a rousing "falalalalalalala") after being dismissed from a football game and such but that's died down over the years emo . Luckily, though, a tradition that I thought had disappeared was brought back: the be-boxing session right before going onto the field blaugh . All the clarinets would huddle together and we'd start beboxing. The section leader will start and then he/she (a she this year) will point to each clarinet in turn and they'd join in with a sound and rhythm of their own.

As for band-wide customs, there aren't many but there are a couple. One of them is reminding everyone that we're a family during all of the announcements and another (which is dying out now that the last generation of band kids that know the root of the joke is going to graduate this year emo ) is shouting "Gabby's missing!" whenever we get on the bus.

I also have a personal tradition of just staring up at the moon to calm myself down while we're waiting for whatever band is competing before us to leave the field. It's really calming but the sometimes the clouds get in the way or the moon doesn't come up at the right time emo ....

before the halftime of every football game the pit gets a special treat, every game is different, example: 1st game we all take turns gluping down a Monster, 2nd game we each get one Skittle and one M&M and we have to eat them at the same time, I don't know the rest because it's my fist year in band.

I heard from the the vets that for the last show we have to play with our zippers down

We have this gang sign thing, it's a CE (for Crimson Express) cool and the clarinet section has a handshake we all do before any performance. lol

First we go down about 5 minutes before half time to warm up and stretch. We have 2 "stretchers" that lead stretches for us...I guess that's kind of a tradition. When we're done we go to our positions off the field and wait for the quarter to be done, but on the way we pat each other of the Brave that's on the back of our uniform, it's a good luck thing.
And then before the last game all the seniors go to the front of the band room and tell stories about band and how much they love it, that whole deal. And I think that's it....well there are mello munchies that the mello's do for each game but that's a section thing.

lol I just remembered another ritual thing.

Before every game, when the football players have finished warming up they come back through the tunnel to go to the locker room. The band forms a gauntlet in the tunnel and the drumline plays Drumline (haha) and we cheer the players, high-five them and stuff. It's one of my favorite things about gameday.

That's a good idea to stretch before games. We always do stretches at band camp but then never again, which is kind of dumb...
We have a senior-freshman potluck at the end of the season where the seniors tell stories like that too. biggrin

Our director likes to yell "h2" then we'de yell" O! oh yeah!"
once we did"5 for 5?" "95!"
he also gocks the mario theme and we'd clap along.
sometimes he might sing a random line to a song and we'd have to finish it.
After winning a competition some people like to lick the trophy
we have a low brass party every year
every year at state we eat a CiCi's =)
every year they give us something for a necklace (i'd rather not say what it is to protect this tradition) and it symbolizes alot of stuff.
