It was true that the moon was too high for the earth to cast a shadow on it. But then...what else was concealing that part of the moon from view? She knew the rest of the moon was there - its outline was faint, but visible. It was too much to think about with such a lovely distraction stretching next to her.

Acere chuckled at his huff, clearly amused. "I could always list all of the reasons as to why you can be described in that way, you know." She didn't deny that she was beautiful, since she did think herself quite charming. It was his modesty that she found so interesting.

He gave a slight frown. Was he really that feminine? "Let's go for a walk. The moonlight is more beautiful when the light passes through the tree tops. The rays are remarkably stunning."

He lowered his head and rubbed against his mate. "I've been sitting for far too long to suit my tastes."

Hm? A frown? Her maw wore quite a different expression by this point. She licked at Soft Wind's muzzle before standing and stretching. Instinctively, the female began to slowly make her way towards the north, along the Adahy-Di'taki border. Because of the danger, hopefully no one would be there. She could feel a slight anxiety in her chest, however - moving made them more likely to be found. But, eh. He was worth it.

Giving a slight smile at the sign of affection given by Acere, Soft Wind followed the Di'Taki. "Let's go through the high grasses; it'll be harder to walk through but we'll be less likely to be seen."

He picked up his pace so that he could walk along side his mate. "Maybe one day we can walk along the border in full sight, without worrying about social taboos."

Acere picked her way through the grasses carefully, not minding the difficulty. In this relative dark and seclusion, it would be near impossible to be found here. Or so the theory went.

She pondered his statement for a long moment, considering the possibility. It would be a wonderful thing, to finally truly be together. But...it would never happen, and she knew that. The Adahy and Di'taki had hated each other for many moons, and that sort of animosity is not easily forgotten. At the same time, the female's anxiety intensified. Did Soft Wind believe in this mystical world where they could be together? Would the reality crush him into the dust?

It took her awhile to speak, but finally the words came. "Perhaps, someday." She paused suddenly - had she heard something up ahead? What was that? The Di'taki's body felt as though it had turned to ice. It could just be a forest creature, or it could be an Adahy or Di'taki out on the prowl. Ears laid back, she peered over to Soft Wind questioningly. What should they do?

It was a long time before Acere spoke. Soft Wind could tell that she did not believe, and he did not blame her for it. It would not be something that could happen within their lifetime. Not without a miracle.

He looked back at Acere when she stopped walking. There. He heard a sound. He walked forward to intercept the source of the sound. They were closer to the Adahy lands than Di'Taki, it would be better if Soft Wind was seen than Acere at this moment, as long as they weren't seen together. "Get down." He whispered to his mate. Her markings will not making it easy to hide. "Stay hidden."

He walked forward and stepped onto the path. "Who is there? These are Adahy lands, show yourself!"

"Don't get cocky Soft Wind." A laugh came from the shadows. Another male from his tribe who was also patrolling the lands. "Word of the wise; never reveal yourself like that. It makes it easy for the Di'Taki to escape."

"Escape? We're not trapping them on our lands."

"No... but they shouldn't go back unscathed you know. Or else the entire lot of them will think they can prance over here to our lands without a consequence!" he gave a chuckle. "It's part of the fun with this job. You should enjoy it... it's because of the curse that you lost your mate." Another mocking laugh. "Anyways, I'll be going closer to the border. Won't find much Di'Taki so far away from their forest. Though watch out... I've been seeing traces of their kind here. Don't be afraid to attack, let them know who's in control of these lands."

"Sure..." Soft Wind stared into the eyes of the other Adahy. He hadn't left yet... Could he be suspicious? Does he know Acere was there?

Acere ducked without question, peering out from a particularly thick bush. She could barely see through the thick leaves, but the tone of this male didn't sit well with her. If anyone was being cocky...The female bit her tongue as he spoke. Dying was not an option. She couldn't leave Soft Wind alone.

Silent and still as possible, she could sense the momentary pause in the conversation. Every muscle in her body lay tense, ready. Acere waited with her heart beating in her ears, praying that the cocky male would just walk away.

"I have to say, you're not really cut out for this job. Not since she died you've always been moping." He shifted away. "There's no better remedy than to get back at them. Heck, I'm sure you could kill one if you wanted."

Soft Wind clenched his jaw. He did not like what the Adahy was suggesting. "That's not why I chose this position; I felt it was necessary."

"Sure, sure. I will see you at sun rise when we change shifts. Good huntings, Soft Wind." Without a glance back the Adahy ran towards the direction of the border.

Soft Wind let out a sigh of relief as soon the male was out of ear shot. He continued to stare at the Adahy until he disappeared into the overgrowth. "He's gone."

She could barely remain silent as the male metaphorically prodded at Soft Wind. Quite an intelligent ruse, and terribly effective. Acere clenched her jaw and remained still until her beloved spoke. She waited a moment longer, just to make sure, and then slowly slunk out from beneath the bush. Shaking herself to try and dislodge any leaves in her feathers, the female growled softly, "A friend, I take it?"

Soft Wind tensed his entire body in anger. He glared at the dirt floor between his feet and after a few moments, sighed and relaxed his muscles. "Not one of mine."

He looked towards her, slightly worried and very upset. "Have you been doing anything careless when we met? Did you leave any trace of you behind? You know how dangerous it is, Acere."

((Works!))

Was he insinuating that she was so careless as to creep around Adahy territory? Acere would've lashed any other fool who would make such an assumption - but this was her beloved. Her feathers puffed slightly in agitation, and rightfully so, but she forced her voice into a flat hiss. "My dear, do you think I would be so stupid? I do not stray near your border, except to see you at our meeting place." Her paranoia was apparent - she would not speak Lake Ha'tama's name, lest the trees have ears.

Acere wasn't going to lie: The temptation to creep into this part of the forest and see Soft Wind was strong. But she had managed to hold out so far. Softly, she added, "We should return. This place is more dangerous than we thought."

Soft Wind gaped as he realized what he had said so rashly. He looked to the floor ashamed, yet not willing to admit his mistake. "The lake is closer to my lands, I'm just saying it's possible!"

He quickly raised his head as he bit down on his tongue and refused to look directly at Acere. "I don't think you're... stupid!"

He gave a heavy sigh. He's been doing that a lot lately it seems. "You're right... Let's go. I... am sorry Acere." He walked slowly to her and began to walk in a seperate dense path, careful not to dislodge any of his own feathers that would be left behind in the bushes. "It's not far from dawn."

She noted the male's behavior - eyes down, sighing. Acere sighed again herself, but for an entirely different reason. Her irritation had subsided, only to arise again when Soft Wind mentioned the time. They would have to separate soon, but she couldn't leave him feeling guilty.

"It doesn't matter. You were concerned," Acere's voice was barely a whisper.

He continued to walk on the path, clearing the way for his mate as they began to slowly ascend towards the Dark Woods. These meetings were beginning to take a tole on his body and his mind as he struggled to come to these meetings.

Soft Wind emptied his mind as he continued to walk, not hearing Acere's soft words. Just barely in the night sky, it began to change into a dark purple from it's dark black. Only two hours at most.

Acere didn't feel the slightest bit of reprehension when the male did not acknowledge her statement. He was in his own mind for the moment, and it suited her just as well. She breathed the scents of the forest and stalked through the moonlight. It was a pleasure, the moonlight. There wasn't much of it in the Deep Woods. It was, after all, deep. And therefore dark.

It wasn't long before she could feel the squish of mud under her claws, and they were back at Lake Ha'tama again. By now the sky was lightening, just a little bit around the edges at first, and then the whole sky turned a sort of indigo. The female pulled her eyes from the heavens and looked to the earth, scribbling a bit in the mud with a long, black claw. She didn't pull her love's attention for now - he would return to her when he wanted.
