Athena, who had been admiring the wonderful colors of the sky, stopped her appreciation abruptly as the rainbow goddess made her way hurriedly towards the golden city. "Iris, my dear, what is the rush?" As she drew closer, Athena noticed the letter clutched in the woman's hands. Iris explained how she had come to finding the letter and how she had read it and who it was from. Taking a deep breath, Athena took the letter and assured Iris that she would take care of the siutation. "Ease your mind, all will be well." After reading it, she tucked the letter safely into her pouch and made her way to earth. She chose a secure location, a small clearing between two mountains that surely no one would be able to find before calling out to the sender. "Hades." She knew he would be able to hear her, weither or not he would answer was a mystery.
[[I wasn't sure how to go about having her contact him so there lol]]

Oh, brother. Hades took a deep breath, composed himself, and prepared for an ascent. He should have known that Athena would be suspicious. Hades' preferred mode of travel was his chariot, drawn by four black horses, but he decided that looking as though he was riding off to war wouldn't make a good impression. And like it or not, a good impression was what he needed to make on his niece. So Hades decided to blast a way through the earth without his chariot. It wasn't as easy without the chariot - there was an awful lot of dirt and rock to blast through. But within a few minutes Athena would feel the earth shake, and an abyss would open at her feet as Hades rose to the surface. Hades stood on one side of the abyss and let the opening to hell close little by little. "You called?" he asked courteously.

She ignored his mocking introduction and crossed her arms over her chest, studying him. "Since when are you so kind to your brother?" She had to admit, she was rather cautious about his request, even though she felt that sticking Hades with ruling the Underworld was a low blow. "Or any of your 'comrades and siblings,'" she quoted the letter, her gaze unyeilding. "Perhaps you think Zeus to be foolish, but you insult the rest of us in thinking the same." She would probably pay for the comment later, but it was best to be blunt with Hades.

Artemis always had been the most suspicious of his nieces and nephews. Hades supposed it came from her determination to be so, ah, against the status quo. Even so, he was a tad annoyed that she had used the tone of his letter as an excuse to interrogate him. She should know by now that he always referred to the Olympic court as his "comrades and siblings." Speaking like that had always been a habit with him. Hades decided it would be best to not act threatened. "You accuse me unjustly, Artemis! Under what circumstances do you condemn me to false cordiality? I don't mean to mock you." Actually, he didn't. The letter itself wasn't meant to be mocking. His contempt for Olympus had nothing to do with their intelligence.

Her eyes grew dark as he spoke to her, changing from a cool breeze color to a dark, stormy shade. "But you mock me still by call me someone I am not. Perhaps, uncle, you should realize who you are speaking to before phrasing your sentences. I am Athena." She set her hands on her hips, squeezing them slightly to release anger. "Your message will be delievered but I cannot say that your request will be granted. Why the sudden interest?"

[[{palmface}Holy crud! Sorry about that, I completely slipped up there. I'll try and keep characters straight... Oy, that's a bad one, even for me...]] Mentally slapping himself in the face, Hades decided to ignore his complete slip-up. Maybe it had been a while since he'd gone to Olympus... "To be completely honest, visiting my family on Mt. Olympus is the closest thing to a vacation I ever achieve," Hades said. "Call me selfish, but a visit would be a chance for me to take a break from the running of the underworld. I recently finished a project involving new torture methods and fixed a few loopholes in the judgement system, and I'm ready to take a breather." To his own ears he was starting to sound too relaxed. This was not going well.

[[lol I know what you meant but I decided it would be okay to just go along with it. haha Athena and Artmeis are pretty close. ^_^ ]]
Athena frowned slightly, her eyes growing soft once more. "It's fine, I don't get out often so I can't expect anyone to remember which one I am." Her posture loosened as she looked down a bit, slightly ashamed of herself for jumping to conclusions. "You aren't selfish, I sympathize for your posistion and wish there were some way for you to complete your duty and live in Olympus with us instead of being in the Underworld. I've never been, myself, but I hear it isn't easy on the eyes." She looked him in the eyes once more, her expression reflecting knowledge well past her assumed age. "Perhaps I can persuade Zeus to allow a visit."

Hades was about to bow in gratitude, but stopped himself. If she thought his letter was mocking, she might think the same of a bow. So instead he took her hand in both of his and smiled. Just as courteous, and too personal to be mocking. He hoped. "You have my thanks," he said sincerely. "It is good to know that you would be welcoming. I appreciate your understanding." It was almost enough to make him feel guilty, knowing that he was planning to try and take over Olympus. Maybe he should enjoy his visit for a while, and then approach his brother and ask once more for his birthright. Things could be arranged... perhaps he could set up a communications system between the underworld and himself on Olympus... It wasn't necessary to use extreme measures if the Olympians were willing to cooperate.

[[haha Hades is like the cool uncle now rofl]]
"But know, should I be able to persuade Zeus to allow you into Olympus and you make a move seen wrong in his eyes, not only would you be punished for it, but I as well." She looked up at his face, going through the different scenarios in her head, most of which ended in her banishment from Olympus. Not quite what she had in mind, but if that was the price for standing up for her beliefs, than so be it. "Tell me, Hades, how did it come to you ruling the Underworld instead of Zeus. I have heard his side of the story many times, but I have yet to hear yours."

Hades was trully starting to respect his neice more and more. Defenitely, defenitely he was going to go about this diplomatically first. But he would not be denied his birthright for another eon. It would have to happen eventually, one way or another - and with Athena in trouble or not. But Hades returned to the present. Incredible as it seemed, an Olympian was asking him about the bane of his existence. Hades shrugged. "It happened after Zeus rescued us from our father's stomach and united us in an army to defeat him. When Cronus had been defeated, Zeus, Posieden, and myself gathered to decide on how we would rule creation, now that our father was overthrown. We debated and thought for many long hours, but we could not form a plan that all three would agree upon. Zeus wanted Creation to be split into territories, and each god given a territory to rule as he would; Poseiden wanted the world to run for itself, and for us to merely assist it as equals; I believed the best course would be a systematic approach, a kind of government, if you will, that treated all Creation equally under the same laws, with all gods having their duties which best fit their abilities. Eventually we decided to split Creation into territories: Sky and Earth, Sea, and Underworld. I agreed to this plan because I feared a generation of power-hungry and lazy gods fighting each other to completely control the entire Creation, were my own system to be adopted and then modified to the other gods' whims. At least, with Creation split into territories, all gods would feel a sense of power and a sense of duty, and all would be content to stay with what they had. The remaining problem, of course, was who would rule which territory?" Hades took a deep breath here. It wouldn't be good to show too much anger in front of his niece. "When no decision was reached through debate, Zeus came up with an idea. He produced three straws, one tall - for the sky - one short - for the Underworld - and one between the two, for the sea. We were to draw straws. I had no choice in the matter. Zeus had the support of Posieden and our sisters on his side. If I were to refuse to pull straws, the debate would continue for eons until it developed into a war, and I feared that the war would destroy the world. Zeus held out his hand to me, with the straws clasped tight in his fist. So, reluctantly, I closed my eyes and pulled the straw." He shook his head. 'I felt the straws move as I touched them,' he thought. 'I know I did. And when I opened my eyes, the top of the tallest straw had fallen until it was hidden inside my brother's hand, impossible to touch. It was rigged. He rigged the straws!' But, because Athena was Zeus' daughter, he said none of this aloud.

Athena nodded as she listened, taking a moment to think before replying. "Not a very good way to decide the fate of a god." She noted, frowning a bit. She couldn't help but wonder what hand Zeus had at sending her uncle to the underworld, but decided that even he wouldn't stoop so low as to trick a god. Would he? . . . "What about sharing the burdens? Switching turfs every few years?"

Hades threw his head back and laughed aloud. "Sharing the burden, maybe. But switching turfs?" He laughed harder. "After this long, it would be a catastrophe. I know nothing about the underwater kingdom, and neither does my youngest brother. Poseidon knows it - and rules it - well. Zeus would never willingly leave the luxury of the sky kingdom. And as for my turf..." His smile got smaller. "My servants and soldiers only listen to me. They have learned obedience through eons of hard lessons. Under the control of Poseidon or Zeus, we would go through eons of training all over again. No, Athena, swapping turfs would never do, not after all this time. The birthright of a god is to live with my kin, in the sky, and to share all turfs with them... some turfs in a more general sense than others, of course, since we all have talents in certain areas that others shouldn't intrude upon. It is not meant for one god to rule a whole turf, isolated from his family, but neither can the turfs be interchanged through cycles." In a perfect world, Hades, Zeus, and Poseidon would have, all three together, ruled Creation jointly. Perhaps Hades would expertise in the underworld and Poseidon expertise in the sea, but none would be shut out from the others. That was what hurt Hades the most - being locked underground.

Athena laughed and shook her head. "No, no I meant before the eons and eons. They refursed to share the burden? Did anyone suggest sharing? I mean, I know as gods some may find it hard to 'share' but in certain situations, such as a neice never getting to see her uncle, sharing is a good thing." She wasn't emotional about being split from family, but she liked to know people. It was, after all, one of the things she was best at.

"Oh." Hades thought hard, back to that day. "Let's see... I think it might have been brought up once or twice. But there were problems in agreeing as to how to share. Do we all get a share in the work? Or do we all have to do the same projects together? Do we rotate responsibilities, or give each of us a set of duties - meaning, one guy deals with the economics of all three territories, and the other deals with the communications for all three territories... Sharing, actually, was how Zeus got the idea of splitting Creation up amongst us like this, now that I think of it. And it seemed like the only situation that could possibly work at the time..." He shrugged. "It would have been an interesting debate for you to witness. I wish we had included our sisters in the discussion; they may have brought a word of wisdom none of us had."
