Jove almost rolled his eyes at Antares' quick disappearance - but it would be better to let him see for himself that rash actions could have consequences if he moved to quickly and scared the herd. Often the best lessons were the ones which stun pride or paw - or at least, they were the best remembered lessons.

He schooled his face to be bland before looking down at Dubhe, though, giving him a soft nod as if to say he'd been correct in staying where he was and then motioning, with a flick, for the dark pup to head forward. His own body was rippling with muscle under the dense fur as he started to slink forward in the dense grass. Although much taller than the pups he could keep a fairly low profile - only his ears poked above the grass.

Mu'sha was amused by Jove's silently pained expression at her grandson's quick departure. She knew he really enjoyed it when he had pupils who were a tad on the wild side as the yoften turned out to be pretty good hunters so long as they could reign it in and, of course, he could lecture them profusely on what they'd done wrong. She'd had plenty such lectures...

Following suit, she crept froward. Stalking had never been her favourite thing - she loved the hunt, the chase and even tracking prey which was not within eye-shot but her bright white coat had always been a handicap when getting up close and personal with prey. She'd struggled, truth be told, when she was younger. It had probably made her a better hunter, but it didn't engender much love for this part of the hunt in her.

Dubhe tensed, regretting for a moment his decision to stay still -- what if Antares got there first?! -- but the look from Jove put him at ease. Aha! So he'd done it right all along.

That was enough to swell the pup with pride, and focusing every single inch of himself on the task at hand he crept forward at a snail's pace, eagerly looking over at his teacher every few seconds to make sure he was doing everything he was supposed to.

Antares got a little bit away from the others before he figured out that his brother wasn't following him. Pausing he glanced behind him for a few moments - he had been sure that Dubhe would have been hot on his tail by now...but maybe he'd found a different path...perhaps he was going to get closer! That thought spurred the pup along again, he simply couldn't let Dubhe beat him in this competition...not in front of grandma and Jove!

Slinking through the underbrush Antares felt his heart beating against his chest in excitement, he was close he had to be close..he'd been stalking this way forever now and he was pretty sure that the deer would appear in front of him at any moment and each time he pushed through the brush only to find more brush in front of him was confusing. He was starting to fret... perhaps if he just jumped up to take a quick look? You know...just to make sure he was on the right path, it seemed like a good idea to him and rearing up on his hind legs he tried to take a little peek over the top of the brush...

Annnnd there it was, he thought, as Antares gave his position away - even his naturally tinted coat wouldn't stop the animals hovering at the water's edge from noticing a bold little wolf pup who stuck his head right up. His appearance made them look for others, too, and they quickly found the shapes of the other three waiting in the grass- especially the birds who rose up cawing and whistling the alarm.

Jove sighed a long-suffering sigh and relaxed back up onto his haunches, looking the perfect picture of the disappointed teacher, trying to ignore the glint of amusement in Mu'sha's eyes.

"Well, that didn't work so well, did it?" he asked, his tone belying his baleful look.

She almost felt sorry for Antares - making that kind of mistake happened often in such lessons but it still always hurt to be the one who did it first - she should know. She gave up the pretense of sneaking when Jove did and moved forward to give the little one a bit of comfort.

"It's not easy seeing over the tall grass when you're little, is it? Perhaps next time you'll have grown some" she grinned. Her tone was teasing, but only gently. Pups at this age did tend to grow quick and he wouldn't be shorter than the grass for very long. They really did grow up far too fast she thought wistfully.

Closer...closer....dammit! Just like that, they were gone -- scattering in a flurry of dust and grass and hoofbeats. He snarled in frustration, and before he knew what he was doing, he was running.

The grass managed to conceal all but his ear tips as he bolted forward, moving slower than he should have liked through the tall grasses. He didn't know, precisely, what he thought he would accomplish. He hadn't even made a conscious decision to chase after them.

But now he was, and there was very little point in stopping now, so he continued to run full-tilt toward the fleeing herd.
