He watched her move to the bank and give a sweeping dip as she curtseyed for him, lifting up is ripped skirts and pointing her toes delicately in refined, practiced grace. After pushing side the necessary gestures of introduction, she became casual and – before he could stop her – intrusive!

Slender fingers began to pluck the sticks from his hair. One would think that with all his hair, the sticks would be firmly stuck in place, but it only needed a gentle pull and the silver horsehairs unraveled around the stick, handing off their wooden baton to the next recipient. The witch did not reach her goal to make him twig free, as the young male jerked back and covered his head as if it would suddenly hail stones. “Doooonnnnn’tttttt.” He whined, stepping back and into the water. “Don’t say that, and don’t ..try making it neat.” He looked at the sticks she collected and regarding them with a sense of ownership he didn’t care about having a minute ago, he reached out and snatched them from her. To spite her efforts, he shoved the bundle of sticks directly into his hair, creating a mass sticking out from one side of his head. They started to droop and he pushed them in more to see a few fall out.

He grumbled to himself as he tried to get the rest to stick in. “ It’s not the swamp water – I don’t think. I just have it.” It being sleek, slivery white hair that was glossy wet and silken to the touch. “My dad and mom both have nice manes.” Much to his annoyance. How was he suppose to be intimidating and respected as a monster with such nice hair? He didn’t need people calling him pretty – people like Belladonna. “Don’t call it lovely. It’s just hair.” He released the sticks and watched them sag. Usually he didn’t intentionally put them in. Swimming got them tangled in and he let them stay – a kelpie version of a messy bed head look. If he worked to keep putting sticks in his hair, then he’d be dressing up in some way, and he wasn’t about to take time to play with his hair. The more junk in there, the more he hoped it would be unimpressive.

He crossed his arms, frowning at her for going so far, and then looked at her hair – and the massive hat on top. “Do you always try and tidy people up?” He reached over and plucked the hat off her head, setting it on top of his own and then reaching out to ruffle up her hair. “There! How do you like that?” For extra measure, he reached into his own hair, pulling out a stick, and pushed it right into her red, now-messy locks. See how she liked THAT!

"Oh! I didn't mean to--" She began when he first objected to his embellishments being pulled from his hair. Surely, she should have realized they were there for a reason and if he wanted them out, he would have done so himself. But to get so angry and to-- TAKE HER HAT?!

Belladonna screamed out, loudly and in her highest pitch, snatching back her hat and running a few steps up the bank from him.

"I'm sorry about your-- your sticks! I didn't know! Yes I like to tidy people up! Just because we're scary doesn't mean we can't look CLEAN!" She screeched, having her hat firmly on her head gave her a bit more room to think. It had been given to her by her favorite grandmother (the one on her father's side) and made all the more special because Granmoonie was gone, lost to the human world.
"Sorry about your hair. It isn't lovely. Its very... kelpie-like. So... there!"

She stopped after her tirade, glaring at the ground as she once again removed the hat to untangle the few remaining sticks from her hair. Now she'd have to rebrush it and she didn't have a brush and Binx seemed to have slunk off and her first attempt at making a friend was officially doomed. So it only made sense that she heaved a heavy sigh and half turned back to the kelpie.

"Do you just not like people in your space?" She didn't want to give up yet, she didn't want to be alone...

The two of them stood there, both guarding their heads and fixing their hair to return to it’s previous state. Calder gave up on returning the sticks back (he’d just take another swim), and Belladonna had to wait to get a brush from her room. While Belladonna changed her compliment, Calder inspected a lock of white hair with a deep from. “Yeah…kelpie-like is lovely.” He sighed, letting the hair drop with a wet flop against his head. For all that he was trying to protect his hair, he seemed generally displeased with it. Twisted and littered with all manner of things collected from swimming, it would only take a simple wash and brushing to return it to a lovely state of gleaming, shimmering beauty that could easily be featured in a Horrible Essences ad. His father’s hair, while black, was the envy of most everyone who cared about that sort of thing. It was the looks too, the haunting beauty of his parents that got people talk. Even in dirt, as his mother was often doing some hard labor to occupy herself, it showed through. He had been trying his best to suppress it – but it was hard to hide when he changed into a horse.

“I just don’t like it being messed with. My dad does it all the time.” He could already hear a lecture from his father, an effeminate man with a hand on his hip waving a hairbrush as he went down the list on the importance of kelpies and their appearance. “I get enough looks at the Monster Dorms as it is. I don’t need any more.” He was clean enough anyways. There wasn’t anything wrong with a little dirt and random insects crawling about.

Then again, she was a witch, and a very nicely groomed one at that. Her hair had a nice sheen that meant daily brushing and attention, and her clothes, while torn, still were nicely put together on her petite frame. “Do all witches wear pointy hats? Is it for any magic or anything?” He asked, looking at how firmly she pressed her hat on her head.

It seemed Calder wasn't against calling the quits on this meeting either. There was still hope to salvage their rather rocky introduction.

It took a moment for Belladonna's emotions to settle down before she could focus her thoughts on understanding Calder's. And once she did, she understood exactly what he was speaking of.

"Your Dad make you feel like you're not doing everything right?" Belladonna asked, dropping the final sticks from her hair and readjusting her hat. She definitely knew how important it was to make one's parents happy and how very hard that job was. Witches weren't chipper. They were mysterious. They didn't give all their secrets away and Belladonna hated keeping secrets. Her father, a powerful warlock, just couldn't understand his daughter that would skip down the stairs for breakfast while her two older sisters effortlessly glided. For that matter, Belladonna couldn't either and maybe that was worst of all.

"A witches hat is a symbol. When we cast spells... And not the kind to turn people into frogs... The ritual kind that attune us to nature and get us closer to our FEAR... We cast circles and raise the power within that circle, so it has a brim and a cone of power. So we wear witch hats to show that our cone of power is always with us." Belladonna said, smoothing out the skirts of her dress as she explained. It was a very dear concept to her as it had been passed down through her family, from their earliest ancestors all the way to her. It was important and she held that knowledge.

After a moment she bent down and collected the sticks she had removed from her hair. Slowly moving back down the bank she paused a good distance still from Calder, holding out the sticks.

"I won't try to tidy you up, but if your sticks are as important as my hat, you'll want them back." And with as much effort as she could muster, she offered Calder a very small, very hesitant smile.

Magic was a strange concept for him. True, he had his own brand of it, but it was something else to lure someone to you than it was to actively weld magic and do with it as you please. While witches were interesting in that he was curious about them, they were also strange in that he felt he had little in common with them. While Belladonna explained the symbolism behind her hand, Calder's head started to ever so slightly start turning to the side, ears flickering as he looked at her hat and tried to imagine it as a cone. It looked too floppy to be a cone, and it didn't look powerful enough to hold in magic. Part of him expected it to glow or even talk, but instead it was just a hat, slightly droopy, and not bedazzled in gems or magic rubies.

"So it's like a lid…to a magic box - Or a cap to a bottle that holds magic powers in?" A cone of magic seemed weird. Why not just let it spread all around? If he kept thinking that, he'd expect a big cone head on top of every witch and wizard.

As she approached and handed the sticks, he reached out and took them, knowing that the sticks themselves were not important (the things sticking in his hair came and went all the time with each dip in the water), but the gesture she was showing was what really mattered. "Thanks." He mumbled, looking back at her. "It's not the sticks. Just taking things out of my hair." He didn't want to get into the whys, but he stuck the sticks behind his ear anyway.

Seeing as they gave their name, he felt their introduction was lacking. "I'm in the monster dorms. Where do you live? Do you always go to school?" He didn't know. This was his first school ever. Did all the kids here go to schools before this one?

For a long moment Belladonna stood staring at him, trying to get a handle on exactly what it was Calder was saying about her hat. She took in his words, she examined his [removed](especially the head tilting that was making her squeal a bit on the inside, but she restrained herself from saying anything since he seemed a bit... on edge) and finally she took a deep breath and let out a large laugh. Oh! He thought the hat was the ACTUAL cone?

"Oh goodness no!" She said, still chuckling to herself. "No, no, the hat is just a symbol. It represents what we do. We don't carry our cone of power around with us. We just build it up during spells and let it go, we let it wander and do what it will. I very much doubt anyone could walk around with their entire power perched upon their head and be totally normal." This young man was so interesting! Why, he didn't know a thing about witches and Belladonna didn't know a thing about kelpies, so it was all turning into a great bit of fun for her.

"Do all kelpies like having things in their hair?" She inquired with a smile, hoping that he wouldn't misinterpret her laughing to be directed toward him. She really just found the image of herself walking around with a sparkling cone of magic atop her head absolutely hilarious.

"I live in the reaper dorms. And this is my first year at Amityville. I've been to other schools, but they were more like prep schools. All the teachers were always talking about FEAR and now that I'm here to learn it, it seems so immense!" And it was true. At her first school, her teachers had taught them the basics of math, of literature and the history of Halloweentown, but they always talked of FEAR. Of how thrilling it was to be learning one's FEAR, what it was like when you discovered your FEAR; FEAR, FEAR, FEAR!! Belladonna would have been sick of it if she understood it, but because it was so new to her, so bright and full of possibilities, she was all the more curious to figure it out. "How about you?"

It was true he didn't know a thing about witches, but it wasn't like they parked their broomsticks at his house all the time. Most of his neighbors were far away, and whatever witches were about had no interest in kelpies aside from maybe wanting to sneak in and take some of their hair. His mother typically warned him never to go around a witch because they would steal your hair or snot to make a potion to kill you. You didn't so much as leave your hairbrush out in the open unless you wanted to be someone's puppet. Belladoona, on the other hand, did not look like a thief or cranky woman wanting to make him into soup.

Instead, she was generally curious and seemed to be a normal school girl. At least she was more comfortable at this school than he was. She was probably popular too.

Touching his hair, he looked at it a moment before shaking his head. "No. My mother and father have very lovely, glossy manes. They sometimes put decorations in their hair. Ribbons, barrettes, or flowers, but nothing much. Not like this." He pointed to his own hair, which had things that had just gotten stuck into it when swimming than actively decorating it with beautiful little ribbons and ties. The farthest he even went was putting on a skull barrette, and that was to keep the hair out of his face. It was the farthest his dad had managed in taming his son's hair and getting him to care about it. They were constantly butting heads on the fact that Calder did not take care of his appearance and should use his assets to his advantage. It was actually nice, now that he thought about it, not to have his father around to brush his hair and try and 'tsk' at his torn clothes. ..he sorta missed it.

"This is the first time I've ever been to school. My parents used to just teach me anything I needed to know. I've been home schooled since now." He looked around at the woods, the river, and the various campus buildings poking from the trees around them. "This is the first time I've been a student." It was strange, but exciting. The word student had such a refreshing ring to it.

For a moment Belladonna studied the sticks and remaining leaves still stuck in his white locks. While she at first thought she would enjoy his parent's hair better, she took the time to think it over. What were kelpies like, really? She'd never met one before and this was her chance to figure it out. But what all should she ask?

"I quite like your hair like that. Very natural. It'll always look like you've just taken a swim! And you seem to love the water very much." She smiled at him, hoping to have mended their encounter that at first seemed to be going all wrong. "Do most kelpies put things in their hair. Like ribbons I mean. Or are they like you and just keep the swamp things?"

"Oh! Well welcome to Amityville Academy then! I've never been here, but as a fellow student, welcome to our ranks! Do you have others around you when you grew up?" She questioned, suddenly realizing that Calder very well may have been all alone as a child. What an awful thought! Even if Belladonna didn't really like her older sisters, they had at least been fun to play with. "Did you live with lots of kelpies? Or do they only as small families? Witches tend to have a lot of family members living together!"

Was she being too chatty? Being too inquisitive? She couldn't tell because there seemed to be no filter in her mind for that sort of thing. Besides, if she was quiet and demure she'd never find out anything and its much more fun being outspoken and having all of one's questions answered. And wouldn't this earn her more friends? Didn't others love to talk about themselves? Of course they did! And Belladonna loved to talk about them too! Calder was so sweet to listen to all her questions so kindly!

The recovery between the both of them to return back to attempting friendship had then turned to a 101 course on kelpies. It was the first time in his life that he was meeting someone who had never seen a kelpie before and had no idea about them. Whenever he had met someone new, his parents had introduced him to them first, meaning they already knew of his parents and kelpies in turn. He didn't even know where to start. He knew his race was small, a select breed from a specific area of Halloween Town, but it was strange to think that maybe he'd be the only one at the school.

As representative of kelpie kind, Calder took down her questions. They were all strange and random, but maybe this was important to know. Did everyone talk about hair? He had to know how to answer these questions if other kids wanted to know the same things. "Well, my dad really liked to decorate his hair. He uses ribbons and even gets carved hair ornaments as gifts. Sometimes he puts a water lily." He placed a imaginaty flower behind his ear like his father sometimes liked to do. "My mother likes to keep it brushed but free. Her hair is really wavy and she likes to run her hands through it. When she's working, she ties it up and sometimes keeps things she needs in the bun. Uh, knives or wooden spoons or a pen. My father yells at her when she does that." He considered his own habits. "Most of us keep our hair very tidy. Our attraction is our asset when using our talents. We're supposed to look beautiful." The last word made him glance away, feeling warm about the ears. He was reciting what he was taught and what he was ignoring.

"I live with my parents. I don't have any siblings. Usually our families are small, unless you want a big family. I heard there were a few groups, but we pretty much keep to ourselves. I visit my relatives sometimes, but they usually come over. There really wasn't much of anyone where I lived. They were all far away." He looked back to her. "There were plenty of leeches though." They were good friends after all.

He licked his lips, hesitant to ask his own questions. "Why do witches have big families? Doesn't it get crowded? Do you all teach each other magic and ride on broomsticks? And do you all have black cats?" He glanced at Binx, who didn't look happy to have his mistress talk to a kelpie. "Do the cats help? And do you guys steal people's hair to make potions?" He wanted to know all that a witch did. The idea of being able to use magic and fly seemed amazing, and having a little cat wasn't half bad. Calder would have liked one, but it wouldn't have done well when going to swim. "How old were you when you got your hat? A baby? Does it grow with you or do you get a new one?"
PostPosted: Wed Sep 22, 2010 9:53 pm

It wasn't everyday that Belladonna met a creature she didn't know much of, and it certainly wasn't everyday that someone didn't know about witches! A quick glance behind her showed Binx had come back, though he didn't look particularly happy about the blooming friendship. Surely the cat would get over it, these two had important things to discuss!!

"Leeches!?" Belladonna cried out, her voice high and full of a great deal of happy interest. "Did you keep them as pets? I've never had a leech before. I've heard they make wonderful friends as they really share a special blood bond with their owners!!" Always on the lookout for new and interesting animals in which to bond with, this was a perfect opportunity to discuss all the unusual pets Calder had growing up. Did that mean he was alone mostly as a small kelpie?

"Oh, well, let's see..." Belladonna paused, unused to having the attention turned on her in such a manner and needing a moment to think her reply over. "Not all witches have big families, I mean, there are only 3 daughters in my family and I've known families with many more than that! Everyone is just really into family values! It does get crowded and most of us ride on broomsticks! We do teach each other magic, but we're not always good at it. I'm not very good at making potions, but I'm good with divination! Sometimes people have differently colored cats, and they like to help us, but we don't make potions with people's hair... That's kind of gross." Here she paused to take a breath and laugh a bit. "I was given my hat on my 16th birthday by my Grandmoonie. It'll stay with me since my head should have stopped growing by now."

Now it was her turn and already she was thinking of others. "Did you get lonely when you were little? What kinds of pets did you have? Does your dorm room have water in it? Do you swim everyday, or every few days? Why did your Dad get so mad? Can you turn into a scary horse, or is that something you have to learn? What kind of fear do kelpies have?"

It was a great surprise to find a fellow leech supporter and he jumped in place and clasped his hands to share her excitement. "Yes! Leeches are the best companions. They form a close bond. Fester is my best friend and I have plenty more in my dorm. You can come over any time and meet them. They would love the company!" And the new blood as most were prone to sample his living friends – not that he had much opportunity to show them friends that weren't leeches too.

As soon as his questions were answered, leaving him wondering about other things, it was his turn. A 'tag' of questions to which he was left somewhat overwhelmed over but tried nonetheless to answer. "Uh….I was lonely, but I made due. I sometimes liked being alone, and you can find lots of friends. Leeches, toads, fish, rocks. Oh, there was this really great rock where I live." It seemed being alone also had some negative effects on the kelpie and made his imagination work in full, desperate, borderline-crazy, force to invent new friends to fill up his otherwise empty days.

"I don't really have pets. Fester is my friend, as are all the other leeches. I have some plants too, and I guess the school supplies I own are sort of like pets." It was hard for him to call Fester a pet. They had been together forever! They were BONDED! Pet sounded so …degrading.

"I go swimming every day if I can. I don't need to, but I don't feel right if I don't. I've been looking at all the rivers and pools they have on campus to see where I can go for a private swim. My room also has water. A pond in the back, and my bathtub is always full. I don't like sleeping unless I'm submerged." It made him feel nice, wrapped up in the darkness of murky water, resting. "It's very weird to sleep in a dorm than at home. We had a big river next to our house and it had the nicest spots to really sink in and get the deepest sleep." The river bed was full of decomposed leaves, making it squishy and soft.

"My dad get mad when we don't take care of our hair. He's very proper about that. He thinks our looks are very important and he doesn’t want my mother to pull out a knife she was keeping in her bun and accidently shop it off. I don't think I'd like it either. It's the nicest shade of dried blood." Vibrant and almost rusty like a neglected knife. "I can't change yet. I'm learning. I can only turn into a white horse right now. I'm working on learning to change into my other form. It's a lot of work and requires a lot of FEAR and control, but when I do, it will be amazing. I'll really be scary, instead of just…" What was the word? Pretty? "…not."

His turn! "Why do the cats like to help you? When did you get Binx? Is there a place all witches get their cats? Why is Binx all the way over there? Did you bring a broom with you to school to fly on? Can anyone fly on a broom or just witches? What's it like to fly?" He wanted to know how it felt to be above it all, looking down and feeling the wind. Being a creature that submerged itself under water, the air was an unattainable thing. The closest he ever got was running real fast that he almost felt like he could kick off and take off.

Previously, Calder had been standoffish and a bit testy when it came to Belladonna and her general excited-curiosity about people, so when he began jumping up and down and clapping his hands in glee, Belladonna very well did a back flip. That is, she would have but wasn't very good at jumping high enough for it. Which is why she preferred riding brooms... Regardless! She was getting a bit excited as well, bouncing on the balls of her feet as they talked.

"I would love to meet your leeches. And Fester is a wonderful name for a leech!" For a moment Belladonna gave pause to the idea of a rock as a friend with sentient being, but she quickly dismissed it. "Oh, I don't mean pets in a bad way. Its just a word, you know?" With a great deal of interest (her hands were clasped under her chin) she listened to his words, channeling them away into her mind so that she could remember them for the next time she met a kelpie. She'd be able to talk to them about all the pretty things they put in their hair and all their rocks friends! AH! So much fun!!

And all of a sudden it was her turn. Belladonna had to think a moment, processing the questions first, but she replied with as quick enthusiasm as Calder had previously shown. "I don't know why the cats like to help us, I guess because we take good care of them. We feed them and keep them safe and a lot of them like to fly on our brooms. I got Binx when I was 14, just a few years ago. I got him from a really nice witch who breeds cats. Traditionally our cats are black, but the current trend is for black and white cats, but I loved Binx's long tail!" Here she paused to turn around, seeing him frozen a few feet away on the path, his unusually long tail straight up at Calder's question. Why was he always so uptight? Sheesh!

"And as for flying on a broom, I know witches can do it because we channel our power through the broom. If others can do that, then maybe!" As for his last question, that was a bit harder to answer. What WAS flying like? Well, it was like running faster than the wind; like a first kiss while jumping from the top branch of a tree; like-like-LIKE!!

"ALRIGHT. I have an idea. Do your leeches mind being from your room for a bit?" She turned away, preparing to dash off. "Go get Fester, I'd love to meet him. I'll be right back, so meet me here in ten minutes, ok? It'll be fun, I promise!" And with that she dashed off toward her dorm room.

He had no idea what to expect of Belladonna's sudden request, but as she darted off into the darkness, he was left with 2 options. He could either walk off and loose a friend, or he could run as fast as he could, gather his leeches, and race back here. Well, he had always been a fan of running.

Turning tail, the kelpie changed and ran the distance across campus to the monster dorms, only changing when he was in sight of it, and then ran down to the lower levels to where his room was. There, he looked about, trying to locate as many leeches that he felt would want to come with him on a wild race back to a river. He looked into his bathtub, dipping his hands in to scoop up what leeches were there and thrown them into his pocket, water and all. Then he looked in the small pond at the back of his room, fishing out a few that he saw, and then tipped stuff about until he located 3 more plus Fester, who seemed confused by his panting owner but went with it. Placing Fester on his head, to which the leech latched on by biting Calder's ear, the kelpie turned about once more. "If there is anyone who wants to go with us for a quick run, come out now." Two more leeches crawled out; giving whining squeaks that were the wormy equivalent of 'Take me! Take me!'

Scooting these last two and putting them on his neck (he ran out of pocket space), he ran out of his room and ran the way back. Since he was holding leeches, changing into a horse was out, and he made it back to the river, panting, but in good spirits. Whatever this was, he hoped his friends would like it. If they hated the surprise, he would be hearing their complaints the entire week, not to mention they tended to bite hard when they were angry with him. It made feeding time especially painful.

Dashing from her spot near the river up the bank and to her dorm was a bit difficult and she slipped numerous times, only falling once (and that was because she took a corner too quickly). Binx was extremely Not Happy with these turn of events, running after her and doing a combination scold/interrogation on their run. He was mostly ignored by the red head, but a few choice words got through.

"What are you doing?!" That seemed to be his mantra as he was screeching it at intervals. "I know you're not running from him so what are you running to!?! He tried to DROWN you! You do realize that, don't you? What are you doing?!" It was at this point that Belladonna mounted the stairs, making a great deal of noise and hoping no other Reapers would get mad at her for the commotion. Well, even if they did it wasn't like she was going to be doing more than a few more minutes of running. With some more rumblings around she banged into her room, tripped her way to the closet and wrenched it open, wrenching because there were boxes in front of it. Triumphant hands grabbed for her broom whereupon she turned and fled back to the river.

This was rather unsettling to Binx as now he began screaming in first language: Cat. Belladonna didn't understand cat very well (um, AT ALL) but she knew a curse when she heard one and he was uttering just a long line of curses. The only thing to do in a moment like this was to pick him up, plant a kiss on her forehead, drop him back into her room and dash back toward the river. With broom held high in her hand she looked more like the last member of an angry mob who could find nothing else to wield except for a rather girly broom. Flying would have proved useful, but there was no way Belladonna could land properly with herself, so she decided to save all the good landings for the future...

"I'm--back!" She wheezed out as she reached the bank, sliding now toward the river and bending over double to inhale deeply. That was the most she'd run in a good while and she was winded, so it would take her a few moments to collect herself before addressing Calder again... In any event she kept swinging her broom around as if it were to indicate something...

Calder watched as Belladonna ran and then slowed into a panting fit before him. Kneeling over, she gasped and gulped for air, and he had to wonder if she ever ran a day in her life. Maybe being on a broom all day did nothing for your body. "Wow. You're really unfit. Don't you ever run?" Coming from someone who HAD to run based on being a kelpie, and kepies doing what they did had to run to carry passengers into rivers, he puffed with pride that he really hadn't been out of wind. It was the worry of dumping a leech that had slowed him down.

While Belladonna was STILL breathing for air, he grew even more impatient. He wanted to know what all the running was about, and instead she just waved her broom. "Belladonna, I don't need to sweep – Oh." Duh. Witch. Broom. This was her flying broom. "Ohhhhh. This is your broom. A witch broom." Well, for a broom, it didn’t look like much. It had a wooden handle, bristled at one end, and probably could sleep up the dirt from your Unwelcome Mat rather well. He tried to get a better look at it, but she kept waving it.

Not waiting, he reached out and held it still. "Hmm. It doesn't look super special." Fester was looking over at the girl and the broom in her hand. "What do you think?"
