Knew I'd found something relevant at Georgetown University...If anyone's looking for manuscript transcriptions...

On a side note, if you want to get more specific English is classified as a north Germanic language (which puts it with Norwegian, Swedish, Icelandic, etc.). German is a west Germanic language. Only east Germanic language known is Gothic, but almost nothing survives of that language today.

What caused ancient English to change to modern English?
My answer isn't nearly as sophisticated as Kaji's, but, it was primarily foreign influence. From French, Latin, etc. domokun

What caused ancient English to change to modern English?

There are a variety of reasons. The change from Old English to Middle English came when the Normans took over England under William the Conqueror in 1066. This caused Old French vocabulary to be introduced to English, creating Middle English. In a sense you could say that Old English persisted for a number of years more because most of the Norman vocabulary was used by the upper class, while the Saxon vocabulary was used by the masses. By the time Chaucer wrote the Canterbury tales it was pretty safe to say that everyone was speaking Middle English though, partially because of the fact that the Normans had separated from the English under the rule of King John I.

Modern English is generally assumed to have come about around the time that the King James Bible and Shakespeare's works were published, and soldified as the industrial age came into being, which caused the English vocabulary to grow faster than ever before.

There was also the interactions between the various kingdoms in England.

See, what happened was before 1066, there was one dominant group in England and they set the literary standard. So everyone wrote in something close to that and it kept the country together a bit. But when the Normans conquered England, if anyone wrote anything, they wrote it in French. So the individual English dialects separated a great deal during that time. When English became popular again, they had to re-meet each other and a lot of sound shifts took place at that time.

I'm studying this at the moment, actually. I'm taking a course called The History of the English Language. I found it so interesting that I went out and bought a book. I'm about half way through it now. It's a little dry if you don't like phonetics, but it's really quite thorough. It's called The English Language: A Historical Introduction by Charles Berber. My professor recommended it to me and I will recommend it to anyone with an interest in this sort of thing smile

Does anyone know of universities offering courses in Old English? Or better yet, good books or other resources? I'd much rather learn Old English than Latin in the future wink

Sluvotsky
I remember reading this li'l thing and it was all.

Hast thu hafoc? - Do you have a hawk?
Gea, ic habbe - Yes, I have (one).

Und kannst thu theiman hic? - And can you train him?
Gea, ic kann. - Yes, I can.

gonk

If anyone actually knows any German, that is so similar, it's not funny.

Hast thu hafoc?

I made a mistake too....."korrekt Wort" I believe. Since Wort is a neuter word....

What's the grammical difference between thy and thou? As I understand it, they both mean 'your.'

It depends on tense: thou is nominative nad thy is genetive.
