Austin was completely oblivious to any tension or dislike coming out of the stranger. He simply smiled at the smaller person. Just as he was about to ask the child a million questions about anything in particular, Austin remember something his mother taught him. It's impolite to not introduce yourself, she would always say when they ventured into public places.
"Hi, I'm Austin! I'm a boy!" he blurted out happily. He was content knowing that his mother would be proud.

Tarot blinked, somewhat taken aback by the sudden change of topic. Sev had managed to pound some manners into her though, so her response was automatic, if unwilling. "'M Tarot." She did not include her gender, since she felt it should have been perfectly obvious, nor was it required.

A wide, ecstatic grin stretched across Austin's face. Sissy always teased him, saying that he couldn't ever make a friend even if his life depended on it and he was one of the last people on the planet. He showed her! Everyone knows that a name exchange is a friend contract. You know my name; I know yours; now we can play together. Austin couldn't contain himself. He had to let out his feelings! Stretching his arms as wide as he could, he moved in for a hug with his new buddy.

Tarot shook her head and said "No," at the same time. She skittered to the side a bit to make sure if she had to retreat something solid wouldn't be in the way. "Didn' your momma tell ya ya gotta ask b'fore huggin' peo'le ya just met?"

Austin forced his heels down onto the floor to stop himself as his new friend moved away. He was confused. Everyone liked hugs, except for Sissy because she's always cranky. Why would Tarot be any different. Titling his head to one side and scratching at his hair, he questioned her.
"I thought we were friends?"

Tarot regarded Austin with her dark eyes. She was slowly getting the measure on this kid. Explanations probably wouldn't work for him the same as they did for others, but she figured at least she should have the excuse of trying in case Sev came around and scolded her for bullying.
"Just knowin' names makes you acquan'ices," she said, a little proud that she was able to use such a big word. "Fr'ends is people who know each oth'r for awhile."

Austin frowned at Tarot's response. All the adults he meet were his friends; they'd always pat his head and smile at him. Why wasn't Tarot his friend? What was an aq....aquin.... that word! Besides, both of them had known each other for.... like, 10 minutes? That's a long time! It's almost as long as it takes for him to get dressed, which Mommy always complains about taking to long. Mommy wouldn't lie to him!
Austin wasn't satisfied with this at all. Huffing his chest out, Austin folded his arms across his chest as best as he could, giving off a displeased face.
"Why aren't we friends? Do you not like me?"

((I apologize for Tarot's bluntness >.>))
"Nope," Tarot responded, not even taking the time to think about it. Stranger, high energy, touchy-huggy. All of these were some major strikes in the toddler's book. She folded her own arms, mirroring Austin's posture. If he wanted a stare-down, she was sure she'd win. Even if he didn't intimidate, she was willing to bet she'd win at patience.

Wuh...... What?
Somebody.... didn't.... like him?
But... he was so nice....
Austin didn't understand this... person's idea of him. He never did anything wrong, why did this Tarot fellow not like him? And now..... the stranger.. was staring at him... as if it were a contest. Austin was furious, not only with the stranger but with himself. It was his fault Tarot didn't like him, but it was Tarot's fault for not liking him. It was so CONFUSING! So FRUSTRATING! Enraged, Austin decided to take this person's request for a duel. He stared directly into Tarot's eyes, motivated by his frustration.

Tarot watched Austin's face go through a range of emotions. He looked like a mini war was going on in his head. Shame the two sets of blue in his eyes couldn't hold an emotion each, then his glare would have more power to it.
As it was, Tarot doubted Austin could be her. She could stare down Sev even, or maybe he just got bored and wanted to do other stuff. She didn't know. Either way, those midnight-blue orbs remained calm and intense. She wasn't even blinking, something she practiced specially!

As he realized that the non-friend named Tarot was going to put up a fight, Austin instinctively switched his approach to the situation. His body relaxed and his brain cleared, almost in a zombified state. Even his eyes seems to tone down slightly, going from an angry stare to a lazy one. The only focus were to keep staring.

Cheater! Tarot knew that trick, you just unfocused your eyes juuuust enough to lessen the power of the other's glare. She knew, she'd had to use it in the beginning. Sev had taught her much though. So she pulled out one of her more special glaring twists. She propped her hands on her hips and lifted an eyebrow. It was very reminiscent of a parent staring down a child who babbled excuses until they broke down into a pile of mildless mush and guilt. If only she had some height on her, it would have made the glare even better.

The sudden change in Tarot's posture snapped Austin out of his current state. The pose seemed familiar, but the child's body made it to hazy to notice. His eyes weren't necessarily sore yet, but this contest was to boring for him to keep up. Austin didn't want to lose, mind you, but he wasn't sure how long he could keep up. He would have to change tactics... maybe get a little dirty..

Hmmmm, it appeared she'd need to up the ante a tad. She began to tap her foot in that slow, onimous way. With her flat shoes and the tiled floor, the tap was just the perfect about of echo and volume without being cheesy.
Not that Tarot noticed, focused on her new contest, but strangers were slowly edging around them, backs almost pressed to walls. Apparently she and Austin were putting out more sinister vibes than they'd anticipated.

What was that noise?
Austin didn't want to look for the origin of the noise; he was afraid it might make him blink. The resistance was fruitless for he became to irritated by the noise to care. His eyes carefully traced the tapping to Tarot's foot. Dirty little.. Austin's eyes shot back up. He was only considering it earlier, but now it seems time to do it. He was sure his mother would scold him hard if she found out he did this, but he wanted to win!
He started to let his instincts take over. Not to much though, maybe Tarot would decide to lose after seeing him all scary ("scary" is what his sister claims, but she was already scared of him). Besides, he always lost his thinking after he went all scary, it was a control issue. Austin's eyes started to dilate to cover up the whites of his eyes; his lips pulling back to expose his sharp teeth. A low growl emitted from the depths of his throat.
