Sanguina Cruenta Rather than make another tarot thread, thought I'd bump this one ^_^ So I changed the "or" to an "and" in the title, sorry Corabella. I'm interested in buying a new oracle deck (rather than a new tarot, as I have three and don't use them often enough) and was wondering about what others would recommend. I've been looking through Aecletic Tarot's oracle decks but haven't gotten far yet. I quite like this one's art but I don't get a tug from it or anything so I think I'll keep looking. What kinds of things do you like in a deck? All my decks have a similar color scope and line qualities. My spouse's decks have similar themes.

I'm thinking of getting This Deck I love fairy tales and have a rather large collection of them already, so I think I should be able to get more from them then the RW deck I have. I can use it, it's just really hard and I spend a lot of time referring back to the book for what the symbols are supposed to mean.

Shearaha I'm thinking of getting This Deck I love fairy tales and have a rather large collection of them already, so I think I should be able to get more from them then the RW deck I have. I can use it, it's just really hard and I spend a lot of time referring back to the book for what the symbols are supposed to mean. I always read with my book handy. There's often a lot more to the card generally than I read from it symbol-wise, particularly since all my decks are quite different, and I think reading the card has more to do with understanding what it means in this situation than a meaning you can memorise. But I'd have massive trouble with RW. The deck doesn't do anything for me at all. Quote: What kinds of things do you like in a deck? All my decks have a similar color scope and line qualities. My spouse's decks have similar themes. All my decks are quite different. I really need it to be aesthetically well-formed, and well-illustrated. Other than that there's no particular theme that jumps to mind.

Sorry for dragging this back up but I has a question about this. Sanguina Cruenta Quote: What precisely is an oracle deck? Essentially any deck used for cartomancy that isn't either a deck of playing cards or a deck of tarot. If you use a deck of playing cards for cartomancy does that mean it has a different name than Oracle or Tarot? And if so then what if you have an oracle deck that can be substituted by playing cards? Example: There was a book published, I believe only in Japan, that explained how to use Clow Cards for oracle readings. I had found a site that had started translating the book into English but it shut down before it could completely finish. But they had said that within the book it divided the cards into suits and each Clow Card had a corresponding playing card so if you didn't have the deck of Clow Cards you could use the playing cards.

I distinguish them myself because playing cards seem more like tarot to me than oracle cards, and they weren't made with the intent of being read. They're just called playing cards. I don't think your bearing has an effect on what you'd call either deck myself.

Ok I was just wondering since when I had started doing the readings and still learning the cards I had set aside a deck of playing cards for when I would do the compatiblity readings since I still didn't have memorized which card was in what suit.

I saw this deck at the new bookstore in our mall and got excited. I love this artist and I'm looking for one of her how-to books, so when I saw this deck I was all "OOH!" even though I'm not a fan of tarot. Just thought I'd share smile

I don't know why, but I'm not a fan of that deck myself. Peculiar, I know. Anyways, I am on tumblr which at first I thought was lame but turns out there's some interesting stuff shared on there. I came across this tarot spread. Am going to try it out tonight - I'm just trying to work out what deck I'd like to use.

Sanguina Cruenta I came across this tarot spread. Am going to try it out tonight - I'm just trying to work out what deck I'd like to use. I'm totally going to try that. It's funny because I thought about bringing my tarot cards with me to school today as something to do outside of class and read the book while I was waiting for my doctor's appointment(yay for finally gettin my shoulder looked at after almost 2 months!!!) and I've actually been sleeping with my tarot cards close at night. Not sure why I felt like doin that.

Question! Can spreads be used for either tarot or oracle readings? Like a spread found in a book on tarot, can it be used with oracle decks? And vice versa? Or does it depend on the spread?
Like I favor the Moon reading spread that I found for my Clow Cards. Would I be able to use it with tarot cards?

Oracles tend to encompass different energies or purposes than the Tarot - the Tarot itself now has a well-founded ritual resonance for each of the cards, and the cards tend to bear a universal meaning despite the differences between individual decks. Oracle decks don't connect to that.

If nothing else, Cora, I find it's a good place to advertise your blogspot posts wink
I tried the spread last night, using my druidcraft deck. It was quite difficult, but really interesting in that you have to read the cards in a new sort of way. For example, the "where did you live" card, I picked up the four of pentacles, the meaning of which didn't seem to be too relevant, but the image on the card was of a man in a darkened room, turning a lock in a large chest. So perhaps I was confined, or in some form of bondage, or a situation I could not escape. While other cards didn't appear to be at all relevant when I looked at them, or called to mind the traditional meaning, but when I looked in the accompanying book the authors mentioned a few things that were very relevant.
So it was more of a struggle for meaning than I usually come across as far as interpretation goes, and more of a different way of reading, so a good exercise as well as revealing. I actually knew a bit about the life I was asking about already, so I was able to expand on that knowledge - but my reading might have been tainted by that other knowledge, so perhaps a reading on a less familiar life might be more interesting, or easier or more difficult to interpret.
