"Little one?" Nariketh's voice was soft. She stroked the boy's fur, gently, holding a bowl of warm broth in the other hand, sitting on the floor beside his basket bed. "Are you awake? I've brought you some food, and a surprise."

Hanu smirked, holding a squirming Uluen in his arms. "We've brought a sister for you." Kneeling, he set the girl on the ground. "Say hello, Magdalene!"

Magdalene gave a sort of joyous wriggle as she was set on the ground near the basket. Bounding over to the very edge of the basket, she peeked in at the sleeping bundle.

"Hi hi hi! Why's he still sleepin', Nari?" she asked in a soft, childish voice. "Ev'ryone else is awake. He should be too! I wanna play with 'im... I can, can't I?"

She turned to look expectantly over her shoulder at her new Master and smiled winningly. Magdalene still didn't quite understand this business of getting a Master, but she wasn't worried. Hanu and Nari both seemed to be kind cheerful people. All things considered, she felt pretty lucky.

"He's not feeling well," Nari explained, scritching behind Rhiket's ears gently. "He's very sleepy, and we should let him sleep. That way, he'll get better faster, and then maybe he can play with you!"

She smiled at the girl and, setting down the bowl of broth, reached out to pat Magdalene on the head. "I'm sure you two will like each other very much. Just remember to be gentle with him, all right? The gentler you are, the more he can play."

Magdalene purred loudly as she was petted.

"Gen'le means careful, right?" Magdalene inquired, tilting her head slightly. "I'll be ver' careful with him. But why doesn he feel good? I wanna know!"

Magdalene sat, staring into the basket. The little male really didn't look up to the kind of rough playing she enjoyed. But maybe she they'd let her act out some of the story songs her father had taught her before he'd gone away and not come back.

"Can I sing to him?" she asked softly, bowing her head in the pretense of examing her "brother", so they wouldn't see her tear bright eyes.

Rhiket started to wake up - very slowly. First, his eyes opened, just a crack, just to see what was going on with his good one. His ear twitched. Newthing? His nose twwitched, too - gathering the scent, and trying to figure out what this new being was. Something like him? He moved a paw, and tried to get up, letting out a pitiful mew when the pain in his chest came back. He crouched there with his eyes open, then started to step out of the basket he was in - shakily.

Nari reached out a hand, quickly, putting gentle pressure on Rhiket's back. "Shhh... don't try to move right now, little boy," she purred, stroking the fur between his ears.

Hanu smiled down at Magdalene. "Yes, gentle means careful. See the way Nari is petting him? You have to be that gentle - like picking up a feather." He nodded, sagely, though even he had never seen an actual bird, let alone touched a feather.

"And singing may do him good! You see, he came from a place without music - we found him outside one night, all alone."

Magdalene gave the little male her most winning smile and reached a very careful paw over the wall of the basket. Moving slowly and with exaggerated care, she tapped her paw gently on the top of the male's head.

"H'lo! 'm Magdalene! What's your name? Wanna be freind's? Wanna song?"

She pulled her paw back and purred loudly, the sound vibratign from her tiny throat.

"Why were you all 'lone? Didja get lost? I wanna know!"

He didn't speak, and he also didn't get very far before he collapsed into a small, shaking ball of white. It was hard to breathe again, but he was attempting to get up and say hello - just... not suceeding.

Magdalene watched the pale Uluen try to move. It didn't look like he could move very far at all.

Looking from Nari to Hanu, she asked, "Am I allowed to get in the basket to say hi?"

Nari hummed, thinking. "Well, if you are very careful not to move him, I suppose you can."

Hanu smiled and nodded. "I second that." Then, he glanced at his wife. "I have to go for a bit, dear. I feel like I should check on Kanesakht - this is his first apprentice, and I fear for the girl he's been given..."

Nari laughed, and nodded. "All right. I'll stay here with the children. Just remember to get to the Hall on time, today!"

Her husband nodded and bowed, laughing. Then he turned to the Uluen, smiling. "Have a good day, you two! I'll be back in the evening, and I expect to find you very good friends!" He turned and left.

Magdalene smiled and gave a little wriggle before slowly pulling herself into the basket. With greater care than one would normally see in such an exuberant young creature, she crouched down by the little male and gently nuzzled his cheek with his nose.

"There!" she exclaimed proudly. "Now y'don' havta leave the basket if it's too hard for ya."

Beaming, she turned to Nari. "Was that careful 'nuff, Nari?"

Rhi nuzzled up to his sister, and slumped against her, arching his back against her side. It felt good to have someone curled around him. A big sister. He purred a little - the first time ANYONE had heard him do such since he was rescued. It was a faltering, tiny purr - but it was a purr regardless.

Smiling as she heard Rhiket's purr, Nari nodded at Magdalene. "Careful enough," she assured the girl, reaching out to ruffle her fur. Then she stood, stretching a little. "Magdalene, please watch over your brother..." She yawned. "I'm in need of a nap. I'll be in the other room - come get me if you need anything. Anything at all." Still smiling serenely, she bowed slightly and left the room.

Magdalene puffed out her tiny chest proudly. She vaguely recalled once seeing her father salute a neighbor and mimicked his actions.

"I'll take veddy good care of him! Pr'mise!"

She began purring as she ever-so-gently curled up against her "brother's" side. Absently, she fell to sniffling at some of his injuries.

"Who hurtcha, huh? When Hanu and Nari take us out for a walk, you show 'em to me and I'll scratch 'em for you, eh? You c'n go back asleep now. I'll take care o'ya."

Magdalene gave a firm nod and arranged herself to better brace Rhiket's weight.

Rhi had fallen deeply asleep again - but there were no more nightmares. His sister was there to chase them all away. He fell into a soft purr, and didn't stop, purring and nuzzling in his sleep.
