Hasty Departure.. Word Count: 614
The newest issue of Shounen Beat slid off his nose as he shifted in his sleep, reclining back on the couch. Rikhter Knight, asleep, was a sight to see with his head tipping back over the arm-rest, feet dangling over the other end, right arm hanging over the cushion, and the other arm draped over his eyes.
The slap of the manga issue hitting the ground woke the light sleeper. "What time is it?" Rikhter groaned, stirring awake. A quick glance at the digital clock revealed it to be 8:01 PM. Raking a hand through his disheveled hair, he glanced about the room with his eyes half open. Bleary-eyed and half-focused, he could barely make out the various outlines in the dark room. Straightening up, Rikhter took a step forward only to knock over a stack of books. “Jesus.” He mumbled, as he bent forward to pick up a few of the fallen books. Precariously, he made his way over to the other side of the room where the kitchen was.
Looking back over his shoulder, some cleaning would need to be done, or so he vowed to himself.
As for right now, food was of the higher priority. Stomach growling, Rikhter glanced curiously around for something to eat. The pizza box from about six hours ago sat on the kitchen counter, only a few pieces remaining. "Hm." With a careless shrug, he tossed it into the micro-oven. And always accompanied by the meal, was a cup of coffee. A sort of tradition (or necessity), one could say. Waiting for the coffee to brew, Rikhter took a seat at the table. Picking up the paper, he browsed over the news section with vague interest.
Though he usually skipped straight to the politics section, a particular article caught his eye. The headlines read, "Destiny City Plague", leaving him with sinking feel of dread as to what he was about to read next. Destiny City? The memories of the quiet town flooded back; memories of his parents, his sister, and his friends. s**t, this was his hometown they were talking about.
Destiny City has been temporarily quarantined..The CDC has also come in to investigate the epidemic. The current working theory is rumored to be some kind of anti-personnel bomb set off around the area of the Museum of Art, but no official statement has been released. .
News pundits are suspecting overseas terrorism; fundamentalists claim the Rapture. The President has made a television appearance urging the nation to remain calm.
Rikhter didn't seem to notice as the paper slipped from his fingers to the ground. He had no comprehension of what he did next, it was as if someone had switched him on to automatic mode. As he stood up, he threw back his chair back with an abrupt thud. He stumbled from the room and went along the hallway with swift strides. Flinging the door to his room open with a rough slam, he sat himself down into his black computer chair. Propping himself up at the computer screen, he hastily scanned the dates and times of all outgoing flights.Quote: DEPARTINGWed, May 26, 2010 San Francisco, CA (SFO) to Destiny City, DC (XXX) 09:50 PM - 06:15 AM NON-STOP HA 2 Flight Info One hour to pack, and leave for the airport. If he missed it, the next plane wouldn't be for another two days, he noted with a grim look.
Two days he would wait would be two days gone to waste.
Though he hated to leave his school and work in such an adrupt fashion, he had no other choice. He had to leave. Now. He would send them a email later. Dragging his mouse to the top left-hand corner of his screen, he clicked 'File', than 'Print'. The ten seconds it took was nine seconds far too long, for the damn thing to print. Impatiently, he rose from the chair to grab his jacket, then to crumple and stuff the newly printed paper into his pocket. With that, he was out the door.
Beep, beep, beep.
Behind him, the faint sound of a coffee machine could heard. But by then, he was long gone.
