Aduial craned her neck, curiously peering up at the tree, attempting to see what Cern had pointed out. Being not as well-practiced in the art of bird-watching, she did not immediately see it, and her brow furrowed over pale eyes with extreme curiosity. A moment ago, she had been only politely interested in the activity for the sake of her new friend...but now, she had to admit, she was intrigued.
Stepping forward with her usual grace and aplomb, the dainty wolf crept toward the underbrush, still staring up at the tree, curious as to what she was looking for.
Then -- there! -- she saw it, nestled amongst the leaves; her tail gave a slow wag and she padded further forward, tentatively raising herself to her hindpaws to settle the forepaws upon the tree trunk, sniffing at the bird.
She stayed there, a few moments, before lowering herself to her haunches -- and in the process, delicate paw-pad slid across the bark, lodging a splinter between her toes. Surprised by the sudden stabbing pain, the pup yelped, toppling back from the tree trunk.

Cern was more than thrilled to see both pups taking an interest in the bright little bird above their heads. It was exciting to share what he loved, and just barely stilling his contentment he began listing off everything he knew thus far on the twittering oriol above their heads. “Oriols are relly pretty birds. In some species I’ve seen that ladies and fellows are colored sorta different, but not oriols - ladies are a little browner, is all, so they’re sorta hard to tell apart from a distance. And they can mimic other birds sometimes, so trying to identify them just by sound can be a little…”
He had seen Aduial approaching the tree, noticed the curiosity in her eyes, and didn’t say anything, for fear that he might accidentallt distract her - but when she cried out, falling away from the tree in obvious pain, Cern quickly forgot about the quickly fleeing bird. “A-Aduial!” he barked, sudden shock bristling the fur all along his spine. “What happened? What happened?!”
Quick on his paws and only just swallowing a snarl at whatever had injured his new friend, Cern sniffed out the dribble of blood coming from one small paw and, unsure exactly what to do, he turned to his sister. “A splinter! Athena, how do we get rid of a splinter?” he asked, voice growling with worry. “We gotta get it out!"
For Cern, there was no exaggerating. No matter the size of the splinter, it might as well have been a mortal wound or a missing limb; he knew the dangers of infection well enough for a pup.

The cry ripped through her as if she herself had let it out. To know that the daughter of the Alpha's was in pain meant she had to leap into action to amend such a mistake. It was partially her and her brothers fault for letting Aduial come to harm. Moving forward she looked at Aduial's paw. There was indeed a relatively good sized splinter lodged in there, the small trail of blood added to the urgency of the situation.
"I can get it out." She told them both confidently, through honestly Athena was not exactly so sure of herself. "It will hurt greatly." Moving slightly she got into a position where she could better see the paw and splinter. "Cern, please hold her still." Her eyes held firm on her brother for a moment to make sure he would do so. Looking to Aduial she could see that the pup was clearly in pain, she had to act fast. "Aduial you need to not move. I need to force the splinter out, it will require a great deal of pressure and will hurt. But it is better than having that splinter remain in your paw."
Waiting a moment to make sure she complied with those orders, Athena once again studied that affected paw. "Okay, brace yourself." Leaning down Athena took the paw in her mouth, using her teeth to push against it. She could feel a small trickle of blood run into her mouth but she refused to let that stop her. The splinter was moving now, and so she pushed more, shifting her teeth slightly to ensure that when it slid out it would not leave any pieces behind. When it finally slipped free Athena took it in her teeth, pulling her head back to look at the wound. It was small and would heal well if it was kept clean.
Spitting out the splinter Athena looked at Aduial. "It's out, all of it. We will need to get you back to the dens though, it needs to be cleaned out." With her and Cern to help Aduial should be able to get back without putting to much weight on the offending limb.

Another wolf may well have been embarrassed by this sudden influx of attention, but Aduial accepted it with grace and dignity.
Lying back upon her haunches, half-crouched to allow her injured paw -- which, in truth, didn't hurt half as bad as she'd first thought, now that the initial sting was gone -- to be investigated.
Interesting, she thought, as she watched the subtle dynamics of the siblings, their willingness to spring to action, the comparative reticence of Cern and the way his sister pushed her way immediately to a leadership position. How very interesting indeed.
"I think I'm alright --" she began, as much as a test of their comprehension as anything else, but Athena was already halfway finished with the splinter removal.
She cast a fleeting glimpse at Cern, interested to see his reaction to this sudden turn of events. Her paw was stinging, to be sure, and she was delicate and quite unused to any sort of discomfort. It certainly wouldn't do to go blundering along through the woods and introduce herself to any further harm. No...no, it would be best to lay back, and see what would happen.
And so with that, and with the slight air of a talented dramatist, and allowed herself to remain quite limp, and to await further rescuing.

There had been no doubt in his mind that Athena would know exactly what to do - thus, he had no qualms about allowing her to take control of the situation, listening to her every order and doing his darndest to follow them to the T. When told to hold Aduial still, he was gentle - yet firm - when he placed one paw under her elbow and the other near her ankle, knowing that the less she moved about the easier it would be for Athena to pull out the splinter. His sister ducked in, began working the splinter, and keeping his foot stiff Cern braced himself; the advice wasn’t just good for Aduial, after all.
He willingly admitted that he was impressed with how calm Aduial seemed to act now, and how well she handled the extraction. She was definitely the alphas’ daughter, with a great deal of self-control and trust toward the sibling duo who really weren’t that much older than herself, and Cern was more than pleased that they had been able to help without needing to run all the way out for the assistance of an adult. But an adult would eventually be needed, and nodding at the necessity of returning to the dens he suggested, “Lean against my side, Aduial. Try keeping off your paw, if you can. And Athena, if you could walk along her other side? Between the two of us… between the two of us, we should be able to get her back without too much pain.”
Cern might not have been big for a male pup, but he did have a little more bulk to spare than his sister, and it seemed a good idea that he handle the most weight; but if Aduial was to get back to the dens without incident, he needed to know that his sister would be there to support what he couldn’t. It also came to his mind, ‘what if she was to step on another thorn?’ That would be absolutely horrifying, and making a mental note to watch her every step, he waited to hear if either had a way to better his idea.

Nodding to her brother Athena then turned her attention back to Aduial. "Let's get you home." Moving in beside the younger pup she leaned down and gave her a slight nudge with her body and kept her side pressed up again Aduial's to provide her with all the support she would need to stand up. The good news was the wound really wasn't that bad, and at this point it was more important to keep it clean than rush back to the den. They would be able to move slowly to make sure no other harm came to the alpha's daughter or to either of the siblings. "Just take your time." She said in a calm voice. "No need to hurry." Hurrying would only lead to that paw getting dirty, or one of them tripping and that could turn the situation from not to bad to worse.
Glancing over at Cern Athena gave him a small smile. "Alright, let's get moving." With her and Cern providing support on each side there was no doubt in her mind that Aduial would make it home safe.

Now, this was an interesting position to have found herself in.
Truth be told, her paw had long since stopped hurting entirely, and if it hadn't been for all the fussing, she would've forgotten the incident completely. Now, she was rather enjoying the attention -- it felt only natural for a few others to be fawning over her -- but at the same time, she wasn't sure what sort of reception she would receive at home. What if she wasn't allowed outside to play for fear of further splinter encounters? That wouldn't do at all.
She obligingly took her position between the others, relishing the warmth and proximity of fellow pups (it being, after all, a pup's natural inclination to bundle in close to its peers), and tried to think of how to gracefully guide this interaction to a different conclusion.
"No, no need to hurry," she echoed Athena, and glanced between the two of them. "I'm really feeling much better. You've both done wonderfully in dealing with the situation...I don't think we even need to involve the grown-ups, really."
Was the princess feeling a little embarrassed by all the attention? Well, perhaps, and that was an odd feeling for her indeed.
