@Sakakikala: You have a point. Personally, the idea of a large corporation producing vat meat gives me jibblies the likes of which are rarely found outside a Lovecraft novel. Not that I expect a giant lump of vat meat to suddenly gain sentience and crawl off or anything... but...

Hoshioni
oni"]people treat me the same way on HFCS, horomones and gluten.

i hate when people treat it like an insult to ask whats in it but people with allergys and diebeties get special treatment, granted i see the other side its still annoying to have double standards

Ugh, I know! Then they give you this disparaging look and say "A little bit won't hurt you!" As if they have any right to make that call for you!

You could tell them, "I'm allergic to HFCS. It makes me break out in fat." XD

This is why I don't like most vegans. Having fat on your body is not a crime. THIS is why I don't like most vegans.

It's just the attitude. I know she probably didn't.

Many omnis complain that I'm TOO thin... ;_;
Thing is, my weight hasn't changed at all from when i was an omni OR vegetarian!
I worry about people whom you can tell that it "too much"... but if they're bouncin right along and are perfectly capable of doing all they love, more power to em.

I know I was fatter as a vegetarian but that's because for the six years I ate no meat I ate a lot of crap. It was during middle and high school so eating Skittles and french fries was a perfectly acceptable lunch.

Oh, yes... the ones that act like you're overweight if you're not Twiggy. I've noticed PeTA loves spreading fatphobia, whatwithall their "save the whales!" campaign and a "reasons not to eat meat" video in which a svelte vegan spits, "meat mats you fat!"

And then PeTA has the gall to go and create their "I can't believe it's vegan!" site, which is full of center isle foods - the stuff that will make you fat due to being made almost entirely from refined carbohydrates.

And no, I didn't mean to insult anyone. It is, however, quite difficult to get the ordinary folks to stop looking at you like you've grown a third eye because you want to try something to make yourself healthier.

Wait, what? This is a parody of the original HFCS ad. Finally, the anti-HFCS person isn't made to look like a sputtering idiot! xd

Uhhh... poor nutrition in general makes you fat, and that has nothing to do with whether or not you eat meat and/or other animal products. And veganism doesn't prevent one from becoming a body builder either. I actually have an acquaintance who is one, and my previous personal trainer is a vegetarian kick boxer. It all boils down to knowing how much carbs, protein and fat your body needs. So yes, you can be a very fit and healthy veg*n as well as an obese veg*n.

As an omni, it's a bit more difficult choosing restaurants with my veggie friends but beyond that, we don't encounter and huge problems nor do I feel the need to question them about their nutrition choices because it's "alternative". Even with long outings, it doesn't take much to have an extra tupperware container of vegan-friendly food separated from the rest. We have to separate other foods because of allergies anyway. I don't see why it's a big deal.

As I understand it, we have a large problem with people who are over-caloried and under-vitamined, which has been caused by various factors including...

-Cheap foods made of refined carbs. Not only are they lacking in vitamins unless fortified, but refined carbs have... side effects that cause people to overeat.
-Artificial flavors that give us the taste of fruit, but not the nutrition, which messes up our own body's ability to know what it needs - IE, we try to satisfy vitamin cravings with an orange soda instead of an orange, because all we know is that we want something that tastes like orange.
-Fruits, vegetables, and grains that have been bred for size, starch content, and/or sweetness instead of nutrition and flavor. (Just look at the corn section in a gardening catalog, and notice how they brag about having the SWEETEST SWEET CORN EVAR!)

Furthermore, people whose ancestors spent more time hunting than farming/gathering are, as I understand, much more susceptible to diabetes/obesity/etc. from this type of thing - that's why there's such high rates among the native Americans and blacks.

How did i justify anything? i noted, fat if fine unless it impedes your ability to do anything you want to. If one is so overweight they can't get around, you want me to not worry about their health?

I never said i get in their face about it, heck, I know someone whom is VERY obese, and can't really get around, but all she wants to do is eat doughnuts and such, and watch tv.
But I never say a word to her, despite worrying for her health... >_>

SO please define how I justify your said argument on how vegans think having fat on your body is a crime? I'm not trying to start anything, I just really want to know. I hate being disliked by others, and would like to know how I am wrong in this...(aside from being vegan, obviously)

You're not disliked, but the "thinny thin thin" attitude that seems to be in direct relationship with how haughty people I encounter are about being a vegan or vegetarian.

I'm repeating myself every time a thread like this appears.

Being a vegan or vegetarian does not mean you're automatically a healthier person.

Being a vegan does not mean you're helping the environment and our current societal downfall.

Vegans have always presented themselves as the least healthy of anyone to me. Every vegetarian or vegan friend I've had has had a sort of imbalance that could have been resolved by eating a wholesome diet. I just don't understand why people would sacrifice their own health by not eating meat. I'm not talking about the steak you get at Super Walmart, I mean the real meat. The meat you get on a farm, you raise yourself, the meat that you can take pride in.

Maybe I have a skewed view on food because I live on a farm, and always had a job on a farm. When I return to my college house in two weeks, I'm not going to have a huge change in diet. I know where the farmer's market is, I know that the farm I work on sells a 3lb bag of picked-that-day-organic carrots for $2.

I think that those who chose veganism are those who chose not to explore food and food markets. Did you know there are state certified humane farms? I happened to strike up a conversation with the only humane pig farmer in Connecticut.

I'm not saying this to be negative, it's what I believe in with all my heart. I'm not angry at you, I'm also not trying to insult anyone. Things people say about these sort of topics can really grate on everyone's nerves. Food is a really sensitive subject.

This situation is a classic example of the preconceived notions people have about veg*ns and those we assume veg*ans have about omnis.

I think what actually happened is that somewhere someone read emotion into some words that wasn't actually there or they took something too personally.

Did you happen to get a gander at what they were eating?

There are those who do just fine on vegan diets... of course, I doubt they're living on center isle foods.

Not everyone has practical access to local farms, and some simply do not approve of killing animals for the sake of food.
