Nai continues to look around before looking at Ianna, "Matilda... I saw that name before..." Then he remembers, "It was in that book. Like a note to me from her. Who is she? What do you mean she's your daughter?" He points to the baby in Ianna's arms, "Is that her?"
Right. Like the hairy football could make all this.

"No, Matilda is my eldest daughter, she also came from a wand - but she's the one who trapped the soul there, and all the souls. She's the one who CREATED this place...." she looked a little distant. "She grew up too fast, though. And then Coailiann came along." a smile lit the woman's face and she looked at the side in her arms.
"So I'm occupied with her and the other guardians almost all the time now."

Nai nods to Ianna as he continues to look around at stuff he's never seen before. Then he returns his gaze to her and asks, "So this Matilda... She came from a wand? Like this one?" He'd been holding the little match wand in his pocket the entire time, hand not really straying from it. While this might make no sense to him, and it might not seem to be the best idea, but he's not going to be letting go of that want any time soon.
He turns to the woman and asks, "You keep talking like I should know thist stuff. What's a guardian?"

"Yes, She came from a wand like that one. A silver and blue one, though the wand was made of crystal and metal...rather than wood and ribbon. She was a witch who was burned at the stake." she paused. "You are a guardian, Nai. A guardian is someone who was trusted with the soul of a child.
You have been trusted with a child. SHE chose you."

One day, Nai reasoned, this will start to make sense and every reference won't need a question wondering what it is. But today is not that day, apparently. He asks, "Who do you mean by 'she'? Matilda?"

"She. The spirit in your wand." A nod of the silver-haired woman's head as she leaned against the counter, shifting the little girl, who had fallen asleep, in her arms yet again.
"I don't QUITE understand it myself...Matilda doesn't like to explain things to me. All I know is the spirit chooses the guardian."

Nai takes the want out of his pocket and looks at it, twirling it in his hand left and right. Amazing how that ribbon spins in the air... He looks up, breaking himself from the mesmerizing sight, and then asks, "The wand chose me? But... I didn't even know about wands or anything! How are you sure that the wand's the reason I came into the store?"

"That's just the way things work, Mr. Nebel." she answered, giving a light shrug of her shoulders. "Nobody else had known about them either, but their wands chose them. Nobody knows how they do it, but the soul chooses the guardian they think would be right for them."

And that's where the big question comes in. Nai looks across the rooms, making sure not to look towards the woman that had first come across as insane to him, and asks, "What if I'm not the right one for her?"

Ianna was quiet for a long time before choosing her words, saying them with sincerity. "Don't most parents ask that to themselves, even when they have their own children? Did they do the right thing? Are they the best for the job? The answer is yes, Mr. Nebel. You were chosen because she believes you to be right for her...Only she can know what is right for her at this point."

"And in the future? She may know if I'm right for her now, even if I don't. But what for the future, when she may be like the child you are holding in your arms?" Maybe most parents think this, but it's still a problem no matter how cliche. "Somehow, I don't think there is an adoption choice if I'm not right for her."

"But you are, Mr. Nebel. However, if you feel you are not or no longer wish to take care of her...Well...We can always TRY to rehome her...She may not be very happy, because well...the bonds are rather strong...but to be honest, you'd have to die for her to truely take to a new guardian and...not suffer psychological problems..."

Nai nods a little bit and twirls the wand between his fingers for a few more moments. Then he looks around. Another question for the lot, "Should I want to, how do I leave? And if I need to return, how is that done?"

"The door is there" she pointed to the door to the side of the large counter. "Goes into the wand shoppe, and you can leave through the normal door...there's a matching door in the wand shop that you just walk through to get here, to the side of the desk." a grin. "I just like using the paper portal for new guardians, gives myself something interesting to do."

Nai's palm connects with his forehead while he grumbles angrily. He shakes his head and growls lowly, "For future reference, I don't like anyone doing magic on me if it's not needed. Being on the business end of a magic spell doesn't always end up feeling good, hmm?" Then he moves towards the door to leave, to think about things back home with the wand in tow.
