"I always wondered about starting my own pack." Shannah said it so suddenly and forcefully that it startled even her. "don't know how in the world I'd do it, though," she continued, more subdued after her outburst. What was it that was bothering her so much? Was it that no one bothered to follow her when they split? She pondered that while she waited for the male's response.

Peregrine looked at Shannah with surprise, not having expected that reaction. For someone who seemed as... childish as she did at first, Peri couldn't equate the perfect image Shannah would present as an Alpha with her spontaneous personality. At least she could look the part.
And, on the other paw, he couldn't say starting a pack wasn't a good idea. If he was older and had the experience, or the wolves to join him even, Peregrine couldn't say that running his own pack wasn't a tempting idea. Being the Alpha was the one way he could guarantee fairness for all the wolves in his pack. He would never want it to end up in the state Agua Azul was in. "I'm not sure either. I think, though, the first step would be to decide what you wanted your pack to stand for, and the second would most likely be to locate wolves who were interested in helping you build one."
Thunder rolled above them, and Peregrine looked up, his eyes catching on the edge of storm clouds rolling in from ahead of them. He had traveled in poor weather before, but since it was early yet and they had time, there was no reason to stay out and get a sodden coat. That looked like it would be a heavy rain, although he wasn't sure if it would be a long storm or not. Best to find shelter now.
"We should find some shelter for the day." He looked away from the sky and back to his companion, his steps slowing. "We can wait out the storm and continue traveling tonight. I might be able to point you in the direction of some packs that will gladly take you, even if it's only until you find a way to begin your own pack."

"Hmm," she replied thoughtfully. "Thank you, and you make a good point." She snapped at a bothering bug, catching it in her mouth. The flavor was so bad that she 'ptooed' it out inside of a few seconds, looking rather disgusted. "Shelter does sound like a good idea, too."
Now that she had a companion, however temporary, her urge to act impulsively died down to an easy smolder. It could resurface, but for now she was content to kick back. "You know any good places around here?...and how about tracking down some dinner?" she added as an afterthought.

"We can find food later. Any prey would take shelter with the oncoming storm anyway." He glanced up again before redirecting his eyes to the area around them. "Let's try this way."
The sky had begun drizzling on them, a warning to find shelter or risk a drenched coat. To their left two trees had toppled onto a fairly large rock, forming an odd kind of cave. Peregrine couldn't be sure it would be large enough for two, but when the rain dropped down in a gush on them, he didn't have much time to consider it.
"There!" He led the run to the large trees, pausing to let Shannah enter first. The cave was large enough to fit the two wolves comfortably with a bit of wiggle room to spare. He shook very slightly, just dislodging a bit of the water without spraying her, and peered at the rain for a moment before turning back around. "At least we got out of the worst of it. We can wait until it lessens or stops to try to find another place."

Shannah had slipped and planted herself in a rather large puddle in her race to get in, so she stood outside for a moment to shake - except that the rain had decided to pull one of those dump-a-bucket-on-your-head sudden downpours, and it didn't help. She hmphed and went inside, still dripping. "Sorry about getting the floor all wet," she smiled apologetically, curling up against the side.

Peri didn't even have time to smile at her apparently normal (for her) clumsiness. He was so close on her tail getting into the dry space that he almost ran into her several times and only barely managed to keep himself from being so far in her personal space that he was her personal space. He stepped back an inch, tucking his tail to the side to keep it in the shelter.
"I'm getting it as wet as you," he replied, shaking his head and settling down near her without touching her. As best as he could, anyway. "We'll dry as long as we aren't out in it."
A drop of water fell on his paw and he instinctively jerked it slightly before he realized what it was. He directed a small, rueful smile at her. "And if our shelter doesn't leak it all on us."
The logs seemed to be holding up fairly well against the rain, though, as there were only a few spots leaking yet, and nothing too serious. Peri didn't know if that was from the angle of the trees or something else, but he usually didn't get hung up on those kinds of questions. They were dry for now, and that was enough.
He wagged his tail slightly, flicking water away from it. He debated mentioning the packs he had thought of earlier, but uncomfortably pushed it aside for the moment. He turned his attention instead to observing her sodden form, trying to puzzle out the female. His tail continued absently wagging as he just looked at her, oddly silent considering their conversation moments before.

It was odd, really. Shannah found herself not minding the closeness at all. "Hmm," she said thoughtfully at the drip that had made Peri jump. She smooshed her way carefully outside and soon came back with a rock, jamming it into the hole with her feet and muzzle. "There," she murmured, satisfied. "That should do it." Then it occurred to her that she'd tracked in even more water. She rolled her eyes in vague amusement of her own idiocy. She sighed, letting all the tension go. A soft smile of contentment formed. "Thanks for letting me hang out with you."

Peri pushed against one of the logs as Shannah squeezed back out into the rain they had just escaped. What was-- He leaned forward, peering out into the overcast, rain-blinded forest. He could just barely make her out in all of it, and when she came back he found there wasn't nearly enough room for her to get back in without getting him wet as well. He swallowed back a sigh as she got water on him, seeming to return to her former silliness. Why had she done that? Now they were definitely wet.
He didn't get a chance to ask her what she was doing. The rock she was holding suddenly made sense as she blocked up the hole, and as she rolled her eyes Peri found himself grinning at her. Without noticing, his tail took up a rhythm, beating on the ground in amusement. Her thanks took him by surprise, and the grin faded to a smile as his amusement dipped into something closer to comfort. Peri was naturally serious; it didn't mean he couldn't have fun and be relaxed, he simply had a mature outlook on most things. Thanks being one of them, clearly.
"You're welcome." He was studying her again, and he wasn't sure what to make of himself for doing it. "It's nice to have company when you've been alone." He wasn't really sure if he was talking about him or her.

"It sure is." Her voice took on a natural warmth as she contemplated that fact. But then, there was that....she turned her face away, toward the wall. 'Dangit, as much as I want to be good about this...I don't want to be alone again. I don't!" Shannah made a good strong effort not to start crying, but she partially failed. It showed in her voice, even if the solitary tear was hidden by the wetness that already existed. "Gosh, I'm sorry. I shouldn't make you suffer for my problems. It's just....I'm wondering why everyone kicked me out in the dirt when the pack disbanded. No one wanted to bring me along. And I just can't figure out why. And...And....it makes me so lonely!" She bit her lip, trying to regain control of herself.

Peregrine's countenance immediately shifted into a frown and he moved closer, ignoring his previous desires to give them each their own space. "Don't be upset. I know several packs that would be good. Safe. I can take you to one, if you want. They aren't far from Agua Azul..." That thought did nothing to lighten his expression, "But far enough to be safe."
Here was a female in need, one who had been slighted but obviously needed the pack feeling. She wouldn't make it as a lone wolf, that much was very obvious to Peri from everything he had seen of her personality and heard from her up to this point. Her last words did nothing but confirm it. "I'll take you to a pack. You can travel with me until we get to one you like."
Would he abandon his sisters? Would he ever sit idly by while somewolf was being mistreated? Never. And if he abandoned Shannah, he'd be as good as committing himself to being no better than everything he disliked.
"I'll make sure you aren't alone. Okay?" He nudged her to make sure she was paying attention. "Okay?"

Shannah couldn't say anything without losing it again, but as she turned her face to his, suddenly lit up with this new hope, her eyes said it all. Thank you, so much, they said. You have no idea what you've just done for me. She leaned into him, feeling warm even though her fur was cold and wet. In the back of her mind there was the nagging thought that he might not like the contact, so she was alert to changes in body language that would signal his preference, but beyond that, she shoved the world from her mind. If only for the moment, things felt like they could once again become right.
