Emma was still clad in mourner's black when she entered, but altered from her usual gown into a tight-fitting bodice and loose trousers. Fighting gear.

Her rapier dangled at her hip, glinting in the dim light that the cathedral allowed in.

"So."

She had expected pleasantries or at least a few words before beginning, and was woefully incorrect. A blade bit into her shoulder, causing a hiss of indrawn breath.

The enchantress unsheathed her own blade and prepared herself.

The tall shadow that had followed her waited, watching.

"The least you could do is show a bit of respect before leaping into a duel," Emma pointed out, as patiently as one with a fresh scar in their shoulder could point out. "Weren't you taught that?"

Nathaniel tried not to let his guard down, but it was true; he had been taught better than that. In his was of apologizing, he waited for Emma to make the next move, and she did; a quick flash of her rapier cut a p***k into the exorcist's cloak and flesh. He would have avoided it, he thought to himself, if he wasn't so weighed down. He stepped back to recover from the initial shock, then gripped his smallsword and attempted to feint, though his form was a bit messy...

The enchantress cursed her weakened state as she parried another strike, thankful that the new exorcist's equipment slowed him down.

"I do miss the pleasantries, you know." she commented idly, bringing the rapier back around in a quick slash across his chest. He was stronger than her, even at her peak physical state, that was certain, but she was faster.

A wave of fatigue swept over her, and she quickly realized that this may have been a bad idea.

Nathaniel struggled to keep pace, and he could see Emma was slowing down. Probably just so he could keep up with her, he thought to himself, but he didn't feel patronized; he was grateful. Emma swung a swift blow, which Nathaniel managed to parry. She attempted a number of stab-strikes, and the exorcist was able to deflect these with notable agility; though his footspeed was hindered by his gear, he was quite agile otherwise.

When Emma swept her rapier once more, he stepped back to dodge; but again, he brought his footspeed into play, and the strike opened a line in his garment, revealing a red line in his flesh. Emma would have seen him wince, if his face were not obscured.

He was good. Good enough to keep pace with her (though that may have been damning him with faint praise, crippled as she was). Despite her state, Emma still had centuries of experience behind her that Nathaniel did not, and elven reflexes to boot.

She sensed the wince; motherhood had given her that new power (to compensate for sapping her strength, she thought), and the pain registered as a dim echo in her web of senses.

Despite the knowledge of his pain, the Lady of Bainbridge struck again, this time a grave blow through the shoulder.

As Emma withdrew her blade, Nathaniel collapsed on his hand and knees, gripping his shoulder. He was disappointed in himself; not because he had lost---he was not thinking in therms of winning and losing---but because he had seen his tutor take several blows far more dire than this before and stand back up, yet he could not.

He fought to stand under the weight of his pain, shuddering and panting, but it seemed he was effectively incapacitated...

Rather than giving some sort of sarcastic final remark or even bothering to sheathe her blade, the enchantress knelt beside Nathaniel, her small fingers prying his hand off the wound. "It'll get infected that way, my boy."

Violet light sprang up around her fingers, taking the pain before she began to heal that which her blade had created.

When at last the wound was healed and Nathaniel was well enough to stand, he bowed gratefully to Emma. He held up his smallsword inquisitively, though, hoping if, perchance, Emma was still willing to duel?

She nodded (against her better judgment), picking her rapier up from the cathedral floor. Dizziness was crashing over her in waves now and she tried her best to mask it with a cool, level gaze and straight-backed posture.

Blade clutched in one hand, Emma waited for Nathaniel to engage.

Nathaniel gripped his cloak with his sword-bearing hand, in preparation to use a more esoteric method of fighting. He doubted it would really work against a sorceress, but nonetheless, it was a technique he wished to practice.

(( This fighting technique depends on using the cloak to blind, confuse, or disorient the opponent. A low roll is suitable; not likely to work on you of all people. XD ))

((Righto! Editing.))

"Really now, that's just insulting."

Emma clicked her tongue in ladylike disapproval as she made a clean tear through the cloak, making a nick in the flesh beneath.

The shadows in the cathedral stretched out to her, as if begging to be used.

Nathaniel looked at his torn cloak with a bit of disappointment; he wouldn't be able to practice using it at all now. There was an extra in his coffin, but he wouldn't be able to take it out in the middle of a duel.

He shrugged, and tried his hand at simple swordplay again. As Emma struck again, he caught the blow between the blade and hilt of his weapon, tossing the strike aside and slashing at the opportunity he had made; but Emma stepped away quickly, dodging it. She made a swing at the exorcist, which he quickly moved to parry. Her attack was a feint. It missed his parry completely and took a nick of flesh off his arm instead!

She moved to strike again, making a mental promise to herself to sew closed the tear in the cloak. She had been trying to learn for the past few months, but all her attempts at hats, socks, and the like for little Winifred had ended in tangled piles of string that looked like something one would make to keep an octopus warm-

This train of thought may not have been the best for the middle of a battle. She misjudged one swing of Nathaniel's sword, and it bit deeply into her side.

The enchantress staggered, blackness dancing at the edges of her vision.

Nathaniel waited politely for Emma to recover from the strike before reengaging. The sorceress's vision returned well enough for combat, and she made a swift strike to his face, which he managed to parry. Swiveling her blade to the momentum by which Nathaniel parried it, she brought it around to his side. This, he parried as well, but Emma pressed against this parry in swordlock, dragging her blade's length down Nathaniel's with a quick withdrawal and driving it towards him again. His blade connected with hers, nearly parrying it. But not quite. There was a fresh cut in his torso, now, and he staggered. Nathaniel tried his best to stand, and though the cut was deep, it was not nearly as deep as the one that had pierced his shoulder, and he managed to persevere, this time...

A vicious strike sent the enchantress flying back, landing on her back upon the stone floor. No cracks of bone breaking, thankfully, but there would definitely be a heap of bruises. Nathaniel, now standing over her, made a move to strike, which she (still holding onto her rapier somehow) managed to parry.

The thin steel had suddenly become much heavier, and Emma knew she would have difficulty getting back to her feet.

If she managed to at all.
