"I'd love the chance to touch dragon eggs," Tor admitted with a wistful sigh. "I know it would probably never be allowed, but I'd like to know what it's like... A singing dragon. I like that idea, and I can imagine the little thing finding a harper, and befriending Tereth; I've met him myself and sang for him. It's wonderful that dragon appreciate music like we do it feels... right." He couldn't say why he felt that way, it should be obvious that any intelligent creatures would like music, and even flitts loved music... but dragons. They were just different beasts, weren't they?
"I suppose it would have to be a curious one for you," the harper went on, "curious and creative; that comes with the love of composition of course, and it would be wonderful to share such a thing with a dragon. Imagine composing music together, with a part for you and a part for your lifemate. That would be quite something, wouldn't it?" Perhaps if she found the right dragon, got right right chances, and pushed herself his little student could become a Weyrsinger one day. It was a massive ambition, and he had no idea if she kept it in her heart of hearts, but it was a beautiful dream.

She wished there was a way for him to have the chance, though it wasn't up to her--not unless she Impressed crimson or something, and that looked less likely than Impressing at all...if there were a crimson in the eggs that lay on the Sands, there would be only one, most likely. Odds like Impressing a queen, and she was fair sure she wasn't going to be doing that either. "You've sung for Tereth? I bet he enjoyed that! And no doubt you put on a better performance," she said, chuckling. "He encouraged his rider to sing with me, though, that was fun." She agreed whole-heartedly about the "rightness" of it--music was something that transcended humanity, as dragons and firelizards and dolphins all had their own ways of making or appreciating it.
"I've been half trying to put together music-minded dragons in a choir," she said, grinning widely at Tor's suggestion. She hadn't thought of it in relation to a dragon of her own--an oversight, on her part, but now corrected it was a strong desire. "I don't know if their riders would generally approve of such frivolity, and I know they've other duties. Still, it would be something!"

"Get together all the riders in Trine who used to be harpers, you'd have yourself quite a choir," Tor grinned. "Golds and bronzes for the bass, a baritone from silvers and browns, tenor crimsons, alto blues and blacks, soprano greens, and a white for those really high notes! If only they would make that beautiful humming sound at times other than hatchings... though I suppose that would make it less special, wouldn't it?" That sound. That was hatchings for him, that sound that resonated so perfectly throughout the Weyr, bounced around the hatching grounds. Perfection.
"Only days left now, they say," the harper murmured, "the turns seem to roll by so swiftly with so many clutches and yet they all feel so special... Shells, I haven't even been here that long, only two turns. It feels like a lot longer; I've really settled myself here." He couldn't imagine living elsewhere, he had so many friends here, and he was near to dragons and to such a variety of people, and of course there was the fact that at a Weyr life was so much freer. He couldn't return to a hidebound hold or hall, not having tasted such freedom and acceptance.

"That sounds like the best way to do it," Akaya replied, grinning back. "Since the dragons don't remember as easily, you'd need the riders to remember their parts too. Harper-riders would take such lessoning far more readily!" She was sure it was possible, somehow--hadn't the legendary Menolly's fair of firelizards sung with her? If firelizards could sing or hum besides at hatchings, then surely dragons could as well...
"It's good to find a home," Akaya said, one finger twirling in her hair absently. And if she did become a rider, well--she preferred Trine to the northern weyrs. Perhaps she just didn't want to suffer through more northern winters though...heh, just the thought of them was enough to make her shiver.
But just days left...days before her fate was decided, one way or another. Well, Turns really, since she planned to stay no matter what happened, but she could still almost feel the fork in the path ahead. "As this is my first Hatching of any kind, I feel woefully unprepared," she said, confiding her nervousness. "It's one thing to know, but the experience--just watch, I'll be the candidate that faints dead away from letting it all get to me!"

Tor chuckled softly and shook his head. "You'll do fine," he assured the younger Harper, "I'm certain of it; just make sure you've had plenty to drink before it happens! I know a green rider who fainted her first time because she'd let herself get dehydrated. Good job her dragon didn't come looking for her that time, eh?"
If you had swooned, could a dragon still bond to you, or would it wail in panic and vanish? Not something he wanted to think about, not something he wanted to think about at all. Given that he couldn't see, the sounds the dragonets made was all he had to go on and he knew well how heartbreaking the cry of a hatchling that couldn't find a rider was.
