The rumble of laughter returned as Feynath inclined her head, listening, The greens... often have very strong opinions. I enjoy the tricks of the Blacks, they're very agile. There was an undertone of lament in Feynath's mindvoice at that - an envy of the sprightlier dragons. She knew her endurance might far outweight the greens and blues but their maneuverability meant they could easily evade her in the air. Still, it was a nice to show to watch when the blacks played or the greens Rose.
Eirlyn had glanced over at Feynath when she felt that pang of envy and grinned, After, we'll take to the skies and spend the afternoon among the clouds, yes? No one can claim the same. The senior whuffed and nosed her rider then, playfully, and caused the Weyrwoman to stumble a bit. "Hey!"
Feynath merely chuckled.
The Weyrwoman's expression became wry, "They'll start vying for favour as early as now. It's quite a bit of fun when there's no pressure. As for them being around... you'll find you're grateful for their proximity when a Flight's afoot. Nothing more desperately frustrating then when you can't find your proper partner."
"Aye, there's many similarities. But the dragons add an element more to the mix and then things can get crazy. There's power struggles and the like, alliances and rivalries... the Wings are especially known for that. Competition between the various riders can get pretty intense. It's all part of life at a Weyr though, and I wouldn't have it any other way." Eirlyn nodded, her tone quite genuine. This was her place and this was her life and that was where she truly belonged - it had always felt good to fit in.

The warmth and happiness in Eirlyn's voice was hard to miss, and lulled Inaari into a sense of hopefulness for her future. Certainly the Weyrwoman was easy to get along with, and had a way of saying things straight and to the point - she didn't skirt around an issue and that was useful. She already had friends, and as a goldrider, a place had been carved for her centuries before. Inaari and Ianath would not have to claw their way through the ranks of the wings, trying to make something of themselves, find somewhere that they fit.
Everyone would be trying to fit to her. That was a dangerous and slightly intoxicating thought, one that was seized immediately by Ianath. It is why we must be our best - they follow where I lead. I do not want to lead wrong. Her great head settled against her rider, before turning attention back to the great gold dragon across the weyr. I very much like how the silvers look, and I think it must be very fun to be a white. You can go whenever you want, and that would be very fun. Ianath got a bit wistful at this, but there was no question of her preference. She loved being gold!
"So I suppose that's something else we do, referee these little power struggles? Or do we leave that up to the boys, and just take care that our queens don't start sniping at each other? I know it's explosive to put too many unmarried noble girls in a room together, I can't imagine it's much different here." A quick smile flashed as Inaari stroked her mate's neck. "Good thing we got that out of the way early, don't you think?"

The silvers are haughty as exotic birds, though. More vain then even bronzes. Feynath sounded amused, I would not want to be white. I can go when and where I please better this way. Like mother, like daughter.
"Ah... sometimes. If it's interferring with Weyr function, yes. You're also going to be the one with the veto power on punishments and agreements. Mostly boys will just compare their bits, flex a few muscles, maybe punch each other and it's done. H'trel handles nearly all of that from the Wingleaders and bronzes. You'll be more concerned with the politics of the Greens and Blues... which, I'm not going to lie, Makes sense only once in a while. Don't get involved unless there's need to be involved - your gold's ability to command the other dragons is a blessing and a curse." She smiled, "Experience will teach you the truth of that."
"As for arguing queens... yes. Putting too many golds together is suicidal. It's why Queens are transferred between Weyrs when needed. Otherwise Malvren would have, what, three? Four? now... and too many cooks in the kitchen spells trouble."

The high number that Eirlyn so casually tossed out had Inaari's eyes widening a bit. Fort hadn't had that many golds inside of it at once for awhile, from what she had heard, and now Malvren was sending theirs away to make room for her and what golds Feynath and Ianath clutched from there on? "Four? Shards but that's a lot!" Four golds competing for a small collection of bronzes, and what browns tried to fly? Gracious goodness.
"I suppose that's a pressing question then, do we pay much attention to what greens rise and when? Do they get territorial like queens, where all others have to be kept away from the proddy one? They don't really talk much about this, I guess it's just something you're supposed to find out on your own." A quick bit of frustration ran across Inaari's face. It seemed that the rest of her life would be dedicated to well...sex. Lots and lots of dragon sex. But her earlier comment came back, and she was forced to reevaluate. Had she stayed in the Holds, she would have married undoubtedly. Married couples generally did such things more than the few times a year she would be required to them.
So it wasn't really as bad as all that.
"I hope I have said so already, but thank you for being so kind about this. I feel a bit left out for Thread sometimes with all this, and the Candidatemaster can't quite answer some of my questions like you can." Gratitude filled her vast emotional register and poured out. Without the Weyrwoman, she would have known nothing, and failed. Horribly. That was unacceptable - for her and for Ianath!

"Nah. The greens aren't territorial about their Flights. I actually enjoy watching when I can. With nearly two hundred greens in the Weyr, it's a good thing too. If you get a chance, stop to watch one. They lead the gaggle of boys round a merry chase - it's quite daring." She frowned, "The specifics aren't talked about because it should become obvious over the course of your training. You learn not just from the Candidate- or the Weyrlingmaster but from the Weyr itself."
With all of Inaari's questions spinning around dragon sex, Eirlyn wondered if she was getting the wrong idea, "You're welcome Inaari. But you'll come understand sex is only as important as you make it to be. There are no marriages in the Weyr but there are Weyrmates - dedicated human couples who understand the nature of dragons and Flights and who enjoy a healthy relationship regardless. I should know." She moved over and laid a hand on Inaari's shoulder, squeezing, "Don't overthink it, trust me. It's not so terrible. I do, however, think we've dissected this wherry quite enough. Are you hungry? Dinner should be arriving soon - I arranged to take my meal in my quarters today. You're welcome to join me."
