Xanthism (pronounced zan-thism)
Before Time the universe was cold and lifeless, as was the Earth. The worlds were made of fire and ash. This was the time of the gods, 5 named beings with limitless power and knowledge. But being omnipotent and omniscient left them with extreme boredome. For this reason, Demons often play games with each other, and commit to certain trivial penalties for loosing, such as remaining in one place for thousands of years. The Game Master, who had a knack for chaos saw that there were limitations to these games. It was simply too easy to know the outcome of the game before it started. He declared the existance of a new and random variable, life, and that it would thrive on Earth. To interfere or predict the behavior of life was banned for all gods. First he created the peaceful herds of sheep, horses and cows. But the herds failed to entertain, for they developed set patterns which could be predicted with little difficulty so he created the beasts of the wild, Bears and Wolves. They lasted centuries before the creation of the Humans. Beings with a nearly nonexistant portion of the god's power which they called Chakra. The gods were permitted to preach and communicate with the people, allowing them to influence the game and keep things difficult.
The Humans performed perfectly, few even chose to use their power at first, instead choosing to farm, hunt or start war. Eventually, a small group of wizards began to learn how to harness their Chakra, creating magic, the primitive form of Ninjutsu. These wizards practiced and taught their craft for several generations, before the trickster Nimbus created Ninjutsu and taught it to assassins, who took on the title of shinobi, though they were largely called shadow merchants or death dealers. Through their use of Chakra they quickly took control of the Elemental Nations. Through their knowledge of chakra the shinobi showed the ability to grow in strength as well as a knack for war, which ensured the gods would have the perfect betting ground.
The Five Gods
Terra: The Game Master or the Goddess of Chaos. Those devoted to her strive to maintain the games, and keep the stakes rising. To follow her means to follow the power of Nature and natural selection. The strong live to make the world stronger, they root out the weak and they strive to make the strong stronger. They believe true kindness lies in giving strength, and that failure to gain strength means death.
Jashin: The God of War and Death. Those devoted to him live for the deaths of others and rarely acknowledge the other gods as
true. They follow a far more strict set of rules and rituals, and are expected to leave nothing but death in their wakes. The believe kindness is for fools.
Marduk: The God of the Elements. Those devoted to him believe the elements to be the building blocks of life. Only Marduk is believed capable of properly using more than one element, so followers devote their lives to mastering only one element. They believe everyone is inherently good.
Aphrodite: The Goddess of Love. Those devoted to her strive for peace. They believe aphrodite sees farther than the other gods and wishes to end their endless competition. Believers refuse to take any life even in self defense, and that there is always a way for everyone to survive any given situation.
The Nameless One: The invisible God. It is believed all who follow other gods, or deny the existence of gods, are bound to the will of the Nameless One. He strives only to disrupt the other gods, and does so through trickery.
