Ancient Japanese would be part of the Japonic language family wouldn't it?

Wow, neat thread. Too bad it's kinda dead. *pokes it* I happen to be really interested in pre-WWII Japanese. There's a book which I can't remember the name, but it has texts for practicing Japanese, and it has some selections written pre-WWII with the old orthography... If I remember, or can find the book, I'll let you know.

Yes, I've seen the difference myself too...my mom had this old Japanese dictionary, where the characters are slightly different from the ones currently. They are probably not actually Ancient Japanese, but they are certaintly closer.

I was reading that there is a Japanese dialect off the coast of the Japanese mainland that out of all the dialects of Japan, including standard Japanese, it preserves elements of Ancient Japanese in it. I believe it is the Hachijo dialect.

Origin would be (rumored to be) the Altaic family and Japonic is a branch within that family.
