Was it because it was poorly done, far too staccato, overly glitzy, and oddly monochromatic?

But congrats for the show itself and all the actors and techs who actually made those 7,000+ performances happen.

I heard they had a masked-ball type party after the show. That would have been awesome.

I have to say I got the polar opposite reaction from my Dad who said "Broadway was really lacking" after seeing that scene from the movie. Glitz works for the scene, it's a party (A new years party at that.. .the equivalent of us going and getting totally smashed in the year 2k6, only more refined) and from a filmmaker's perspective he monochromaticness is a very cool thing. Plus it makes an awesome juxtaposition for Raoul (Who I believe is wearing navy blue), Christine in Pink, and Erik in Red. They stand out and are very visually appealing. And the spinning shots along with the music fit well.

It was very pretty, but the monochromatic costumes just bothered me because they're contradictory to the song. It just seems a bit silly for everyone to be singing about 'grinning yellows' and 'spinning reds' when they're all wearing black and white. *shrugs*

Well if you've seen broadway their costumes are just modge podged, even if you think it's funny now, if they DID have spinning reds and what not we'd probably be gripping at how ugly the whole thing looked anyways. I for one thought it was fairly ingenius becuase it made the entire scene extremely aesthetically pleasing. I only assume that the decision pended upon the thought that the audiance was smart enough to understand the allusion to those colors as and addedendum to the concept of them all having a good time and they wouldn't be confused if everything in the song wasn't illustrated before them.

There is a beautiful slide show at the NY times site about the party and the show. I wish I could have been there. They put masks on each seat in the Majestic and there was a masked ball at the Waldorf. I stayed there once it was a beautiful hotel. And there was a woman dressed as a cat who went on stage and symbollically handed a baton to Howard McGillin... and then McGillin and Crawford hugged. ^-^

I'm so happy! I heard about it in class the other day and then got home and saw it in the mewspaper. They even had a Masquarade(sp?) and the cast from the ALW movie! I would have love to go to the masked dance! I'm so proud to be a New Yorker, the Phantom lives here >.<

Wow, I hope it keeps running - I still have to see it!

Haha, my friend told me it wasn't on Broadway anymore. She was all "No, my aunt tries to get tickets to a Broadway show, and they didn't have it on the list! But they do revivals sometimes."

I used to think it was really old; that it was written in the early 1900s or something. It wasn't until I watched the documentary on the DVD that I realized it was written in the 1980's!

I feel your pain, Rebecca. That's the same reason my parents didn't take me in Nashville crying , I'm certain I would have become a huge phan then and there. (I was like... 8 or 9) And they left me at home for Jeckyll and Hyde (which I kinda want to see) and Miss Saigon (which I love since I saw it last summer) Yet.. my mom took me to Les Miz... crying

Did anyone catch SNL last night. They made a joke about phantom on the show biggrin . During there fake news segment with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey they annonced that it had become the longest running Broadway musical on Monday. Tina Fey then cracked "this makes "The Phantom of the Opera" the longest running Broadway show in which a burn victim rapes and Opera singer."
I loved it xd

If I wasn't so lazy, I'd post this picture I found from it! It's of Christine dressed as Victoria from Cats "passing the torch" to the Phantom! I love it!!
