xxxxxIcarus was keeping an eye on both the femme and levels of fury within himself. The craze that had caused him to lose in his previous match would not emerge in this battle. This was what he had resolved in the past few days of healing. He had objectively analyzed his actions and had noticed his mistakes. Accepting them, he was driven not to repeat them. Nonetheless, he still was acting rather recklessly.

xxxxHe was grateful at the female for helping his attack land on the warrior. To his surprise, Icarus managed to achieve contact of sorts. His small, muscular frame tore at his should but to no avail. As quickly as he had charged, he had pulled back. The distance he had placed between the brute and himself had been just enough to allow the snapping jaws miss the muck-covered limbs. With a snarl he realized that the cause of the lack of damage to A'cuil's side had been caused by the mud that had stuck to him.

xxxxxAs his frustration rose, as did the heat around him. Tendrils of stifling heat penetrated the muck beneath, drying it slowly. The somewhat hardened muck below allowed his once-white paws to gain a sort of purchase and to his relief, he did not slip or slide. Once more, he remembered to keep his fury in check. The last thing he needed was to lose control so early into the match.

xxxxxBlue-eyes flitted towards the gray female, hoping dearly that she had landed safely after missing the attack. He had noticed her ability and found it surprising. The way she could camouflage herself brought new levels of difficulty to the battle. Quickly, he returned his attention towards the Sure-Claw before him. With a shake of his head, he snapped his white-tipped maw at the creature.

xxxxxRemembering his paws were unlikely to do true damage to the monster-like wolf before him he opened his jaws. A low growl bubbled out of him as he peeled back his teeth and exposed his incisors. Hackles raised, he tried to bristle what clean fur remained. The heat rose once more as he aimed for A'cuil spotted brown neck. His mud-encrusted paws pushed off the ground with all the might he could muster and he lunged at the brown beast.

The female landed on her feet and slid to a halt, sending up a spray of mud. She had failed to hit the male at all, though she was relieved to see Icarus had managed to land his hit. She nodded, glad she had managed to help at least that much. The mud was making purchase difficult and she was slipping too much. She was growing frustrated. While Icarus attacked A'cuil from the front she bolted forward, and with her jaws extended she leapt at the brown male, aiming for his flanks. She knew her claws would be of no use to her, but she hoped that she could get her teeth into him.

A'cuil howled, a woolen, winded sound as he felt Icarus' fangs latch themselves into his neck. He could feel the lithe whelp and the teeth that dove past his thick fur, dove into flesh. Dove into blood, and into parts better left protected and untouched. The warrior was in pain, and he reared up in fury. Before the howl had fully died, a snarl that was too much like another roar belted from his throat. A'quil reared up on his hind-legs - even with the adolescent wolf around his shoulders. And impressive feat, but it pushed him further into the muck.

The male hardly cared. He sighted Fairyn lunging nearby, and in a cry of blind rage, bulled forward. As he came he swung, meaning to hit her with a ramming shoulder - her, and the juvenile whose teeth embedded him to A'cuil's carotid.

xxxxxIcarus' senses were gratified and surprised by the contact he had made, teeth and fur. A sense of exhilaration coursed through his entire body as the bitter metallic taste of blood washed onto his mouth from the wound that his incisors had created. Blood welled on his tongue as he rejoiced for a moment. Pale-blue eyes were wide as he quickly realized who it was he had punctured. The tear of skin under his jaws had amazed him at first, but a wave of fear soon washed through him. Still, his fangs held on as the mighty warrior entered a blind rage.

xxxxxThe snarl that bellowed out of the brute caused each and every hair of fur on Icarus' body to raise to its fullest extent. The cry of his mentor shocked him. A month previous -before, when he was still a mere pup- he would have never imagined to be in this position. Yet, here he was, in the air, clinging by his jaws to the bloodied neck of the spotted male. The fury was almost an aura that emanated from the beast. For a moment, the warmth flared as the discomfort he felt was intense.

xxxxxHe realized quickly that the carmine eyes of the beast were on the lunging Faiyrn. With a grimace he realized the poor femme had yet to land an attack. Grateful still, it was because of her that he had manged most of his attacks. Her distractions had proved to create openings in the warrior that he could easily exploit. Once the lunge began, Icarus scrambled to detach himself from the beast. He unlatched his jaws, retracting the incisors from the now-maroon fur and fell back into the muck.

xxxxxIcarus wattched, amazed for a moment at the anger a Sure-Claw held. The fury he could feel would stike horror into the heart of many beings. It was only the adrenaline that pumped through his blood that had kept him able to attack. He watched, terrified, as he barreled towards the femme. Icarus sprung back to his feet as quickly as the muck would allow and charged after the wolf. He leaped into the air and once more bared his ivory white teeth at the beast. A snarl tore through the air as he leaped towards the spotted brown back of A'cuil.

Faiyrn saw the male rear up and she almost swore. She watched him rise and she shuddered. She tried to avoid his swinging lunge. He was angry... there was rage in his eyes and he was acting through his anger and that made him seem all the more Lethal. She refused to back down and even as she pressed forward she kept her jaws open and her eyes focused on him. Even now he was throwing himself against her, if they collided, maybe she could sink her teeth into him. It was worth a shot...

She saw the flash of orange and saw once more Icarus was flying through the air, this time at the unguarded and unprotected back. She had to keep him facing her. She snarled and snapped her jaws at the male as he approached her. She growled in aggravation and her cerulean orbs looked at his ruby gaze and she wished that things could have been different for him in this battle....

More than the pain of blood spilled out with A'cuil's howl. The shame! No matter how this battle went, he would be dishonored. He fought like a brute - like the worst of the Sure-Claw in the worst of days. He fought like his father - like Janus the wicked! Even as he brought one havy shoulder down on the fae in a clubbing blow, the male was anguished. He could not win this and retain his honor. He would be no better than the savagery of his slender, golden sire; nor better than the cunning cruelty of his sleek and deceitful mother. Shamed.

Another howl, this one of pain deeper than any wound either wolf could inflict, wrenched itself from his throat. The wolf ducked again, letting Icarus sail harmlessly over his back - and pushing himself, again, into the mud-drenched fae - as he churned his way through the mud to regroup.

( Straye, I don't think I can attack both of you at once; so unfortunately that 5 damage was yours. )

xxxxxIcarus' heart sank for the spotted wolf. The cry of anguish billowed past him and he knew the proud warrior within the male was pained by both his actions and his position. Still, a snarl crawled its way out of Icarus' muddied body as he soared over the wolf's back. He was fortunate enough to encounter more solid mud than his last landing. The ground beneath his was laced with bent cat tails and other foliage. Thus, he landed with a small squelched and turned around quickly.

xxxxxThe orange cranium of the adolescent turned in time to watch him go after the fae and fail. He shook his head, dislodging some of the mud that had managed to find its way onto his neck. A small snort of air puffed out of his nose, a way to both calm him for a moment and to show his attitude towards A'cuil's cry. As an alpha he would have to face such, femmes and youth alike for challenges. If he would not be able to follow through with the battles, his place as alpha would be compromised.

xxxxxStill, the brown wolf seemed to be fighting a sort of battle within himself as he raged about. The pain in his carmine eyes was of an internal matter than physical wound. Icarus trailed his attack towards the femme with his cerulean eyes and they turned sad. The warrior was edging along the line of desperate.

xxxxxThe heat within him flared, victory for him was plausible. This surprised him. Though he felt the battle unfair, for it appeared that A'cuil was rather unwilling. The brute was capable of more, so the adolescent had thought. He began towards the male, slowly gaining momentum and pace. Chraging at the beast's side, he hoped to force the looming Sure-Claw to lose balance, and then save the femme from further damage.

"Dammit A'cuil! I'm muddy enough, now get the hell off!" she gave him a mighty shove powered by her aggravation and her annoyance. She was frustrated and she was losing. She was bleeding from the bite wound to the neck, she was muddy and she was getting weighed down by the more that fell onto her. She wanted this brute beat, but she was worried because Icarus hadn't been hurt yet...

While that was a good thing in her eyes, it meant her chances against him were slim at best. There was almost no way she could win this and she knew it. She groaned as she tried to regain her feet again. She had heard the howl and had felt his pain. She felt for him, she really did, but he was really starting to annoy her.

"Listen to me A'cuil! Listen to me! I see your pain in your eyes, I see the rage in your face...I hear and feel what you are feeling so keenly... but you are not fit to Lead a pack if this is how you will react every time you are challeneged by a young, aspiring brute or a female looking for a powerful position! You are putting yourself and everyone around you in danger and it has to be stopped A'cuil... I am sorry...."

She was on her feet again and Icarus was charging him. She waited until he made impact and when he did she followed him and the brown male and should his balance be lost she'd launch herself at his throat and try to get her jaws around his throat; not that she would bite down or kill him.

If he didn't get thrown off balance she'd do the only thing left that she could. She'd barrel into him head and and snap her jaws shut on his shoulder, the injured one, and reopen the healing wound. It was Low, but he had to be stopped and it was as much for his benefit as hers or Icarus'. "I'm sorry..." she whispered to the male.

Now she decided to fight like a warrior. The blow and the burst of blood that followed made him instantly lightheaded. His paws gave out from beneath him. The irony was not lost on the great snakeskin male as he sank to his forelegs in the mire, so close to the water he had been trying to reach. His fur and the mud that encrusted it ran as crimson as his eyes as lifeblood pumped from the cutting wounds he had been dealt - dealt as he retreated, like a coward, from the battle and from himself.

But in a way, A'cuil thought with a drifting mind, it was fitting. He had known from the start that this was a fight he could never have won. Either he defeated a fae warrior who, sadly, did not fight; or... His nose sunk into mud slightly thinned by the powerful water. No, he would not have fought Icarus. He was not Janus: was not conceited, was not powerful, was not a beast. He would have forfeited, if Fairyn had fallen. He could not have fought a whelp to this cold place of defeat. He had not.

As A'cuil closed his eyes, something dawned. He hadn't fought the pup, not once. He had not sullied his honor that way, nor had he by forfeiting the battle. He had been defeated in combat, as was his right as a warrior. Though he could not summon the willpower to do it, the Sure-Claw mentally smiled. He had not fallen into the same dark place as his cold father, or his treacherous mater. He had fallen... but he had kept his honor all the while.

He bore only two regrets in this loss. The first, was that he had not given the whelp his all. But, A'cuil told himself, the time for that would come again, and come when the bright one was truly a warrior, and well-fit for his limbs. The other was that he had let down the wolves. All of them, not just his former packmates. He had left them to the rule of a green, inexperienced youth... He had left them alone... He had left them in peril. That was not the act of an Alpha. And in this, A'cuil anguished all the more.

But this was a small thing, in the face of all the others. He had won against the warrior within him. He retained his honor. And bearing this, first and foremost like a torch in his mind, A'cuil sank without resistance and without a word into the blackness of defeat.

xxxxxThe barrelling force he had put behind the attack not only opened the chance for the femme to finish off the beast, but it gave the orange creature a strong sense of victory. Icarus snarled triumphantly, though careful to not let the blow get to his head. He still wasn't finished. Icarus retreated slightly to allow Faiyrn to finally get a piece of the beast herself. Pale-blue eyes lost their innocence as he watched his mentor be finished by the gray adult.

xxxxxIcarus watched the poor defeated warrior collapse. Something inside him broke as he watched his mentor slowly sink into the muck, bloodied and finished. Though the look on the spotted wolf's face struck him as odd. Defeated as the wolf had been, A'cuil had appeared to hold an exppresion of contentment, almost proud. He idly wondered what had been his exact hopeful outcome for the battle, but decided it was pointless to ponder at this moment.

xxxxxThe moment he had paused he knew he had opened himself for attack, but all the same he let it happen. He had to watch the spotted brown fall. He dipped his head as the wolf slowly drifted off into the depths of defeat. No matter what, he held a strong, relentless respect for the spotted wolf. He always would.

xxxxxCerulean orbs led his body into turning around to face the femme. His eyes turned sad as he realized that the wolf he had protecting up until this point would be his opponent. However, she was a warrior, not a medic female to be pitied. A deep breath. He slowly prepped himself to take on the female. Hackles raised upright and his fur bristled. He peeled back his lips and charged at Faiyrn with all his strength. The sooner this match would finish, the better.

Faiyrn watched the warrior fall and there were tears in her cobalt eyes. She stepped forward and bowed slightly to lift a part of the male from the ground and pull him from the watery edge so he would not drown. She began to lick his wounds despite the mud, trying her best to clean them. "I am so sorry... I could not let him be defeated, and not just because he is young, but because I know it would have broken you..." she whispered, a tear fell from her eye and landed on the great wolf's cheek. "You are a true warrior. You fought hard and in truth, you won the battle that mattered the most..." she forgot about the battle for a moment to stand beside the resting male.

She turned and realized this was it...She looked at Icarus with grave eyes after a long moment of silence and then, he attacked. She met him with a heavy heart and perhaps it was that heart that prevented her from escaping his attacks... maybe, maybe not. She winced as his teeth left their mark on her, an injury that was not severe, but would always hurt. He had fought so bravely to protect her and now the tables were turned. She snapped at his tail as he passed, but she caught nothing but empty air. She spun to a stop, having become acustomed now to this uneasy ground. She looked at the unconscious form of A'cuil and drew a shuddering breath.

"He didn't want to fight you... if I had fallen, I believe he would not have... He cares far too much and his morals are atrong, Icarus... you fought well, and I want to thank you, for trying to protect me, but in allowing you to, I was a coward, and I did not fight as I should have... I was not the warrior A'cuil needed me to be, I was not the warrior our pack needs me to be... this is it, Icarus, it comes down to you or I... we decide on the fate of our pack, we decide on their future..."

She paused and shifted her stance, taking on a firmer footing, bristling her fur and lifting her tail and her headd. She peeled back her lips an another thundering growl left her. Broken hearted, she spoke one more time. "I don't want to hurt you Icarus, and to be honest, I don't know how much I've got left in me, but should I rise or fall, know this... Your safety is in my mind and heart as it was in A'cuil's... I am proud of you for fighting so well, and I am sorry that I must fight against you now... I was hoping, if I could keep A'cuil busy he would not have to fight you... and he didn't, but now, I must..."

The truth was, she had watched many pups die and face defeat in her lifetime. She was holding her breath, trying not to let him see the pain she felt as she realized if she did not defeat him his puppy hood was over, and if she did defeat him, she was no better than those who hunted her through out her life as she grew. She knew now in her heart the pain A'cuil felt... even if she was a female, that didn't make this right. She knew that her chances at victory were small, but she had to try her hardest to succeed.

xxxxxIcarus' heart broke as he tasted a drop of blood from his attack. He did not want to harm her, truly. The resolve to defend her from the brute was a wall in his mind that was taking a beating from his war-like adult side. The drive to win the match was up against the chivalrous care in his mind. Pale-blue eyes looked the hurt femme up and down. From the strangely shaped tuft of fur atop her head to the mud slick paws half-stuck in the muck below. A small whine escaped his throat as she both apologized for A'cuil and herself.

xxxxxInnocent eyes peered up at her. The female who had always appeared so strong before was here before him, covered in the grime of their surroundings. White ears flattened against his skull, staining them with the mud that had found its way there. Still, a small part inside him protested. They both had gone easy on him, neither had attacked him. Instead he ruthlessly went after his mentor, killing the pup inside him with a harsh kick. Here she way, saying that she did not want to harm him. A low growl snaked out of him, "Fight me as a warrior. I'm asking you to please, fight me as you would him. If you value honour, take me seriously and do not regret what follows."

xxxxxSnarls escaped his raised lips as he peered at his mentor. A flash of anger passed over him, knowing that A'cuil had not taken him seriously. It was then and there that he resolved to take the course of warrior in the pack. One day he and the brute would rematch and the test would be true. The thought of this brought a warm feeling to him. Quickly, he returned his eyes to her's and spoke once more, "No, I do not ask you. I beg you. See me not as a pup, but as the warrior I will be and almost am." A silent huff escaped him as he bristled lightly. "We said that we would hold no hard feelings after this match, and I still think the same. Please, go all out against me. Show me the true spirit of a warrior."

xxxxxWith that, he took a wide stance. Icarus was finished with speaking, the time for actions was now. Paws stuck deep into the muck below he snarled fiercely, hoping to entice the true warrior within the femme. Icarus pushed off hard from his hind legs, feeling the muscles work in his legs and haunches. Paws raised and jaws open, he charged for Faiyrn's neck.

There was so little left in her, but he deserved to see what a warrior could do... so she steadied herself, she took a deep breath and she made ready her body for the attack.

He hit her head on and she met the attack, something was jarred as he collided with her and she winced, her lips peeled back and a snarl tore from her as those sharp teeth that had met A'cuil's throat met her own. She tored back from him, probably causing more damage to herself and then she pushed off of her back legs and leapt over him, the impact slowing her marginally.

She was battered, bruised, beaten and bloody. She was holding on by a thread. She thought back to the times A'cuil had pinned her, she thought of her battle with Lithium and remembered the feeling of victory, and she looked at the young male and felt hope and strength surge through her. He was the future... and so was every other pup in the pack.

Her eyes flashed dangerously and she forgot herself for a moment. Her speed increased and mud flew with each lift of her paws. She turned so she was running at him and she lunged... She was airborne for a moment, two, then on the third she impacted with him.

Her claws dug into his fur wherever she could find purchase as she held him and her teeth clamped down on the side of his neck, piercing fur, flesh and tasting blood. She held on tightly and refused to let go. She was heavier than him and he wouldn't be able to hold himself upright with her connected for long. She snarled against him, her eyes empty and fierce.

This was the warrior. Empty, emotionless, willing to do whatever it took to win a fight. This is what it was to be on the receiving end. She had so little fight left in her, but the warrior in her heart and in her blood held on and refused to let go, refused to be shaken. She growled and bristled and then using her hind legs she pushed off of him, gouging into him with sharp claws, leaving her mark on his side and his neck.

She stumbled and fell a few feet from him and she rolled back to her feet, shuddering and trembling she stood before him, his blood on her teeth, and his reflection in cold, empty eyes. "This is the warrior." she grated out in a level voice. "This is what you wanted from me." she stood trembling on shakey legs, his attack and then her own had knocked off a good deal of mud and now she stood, fur shimmering, the smokey details beginning to glow, ever so slightly before the Haze over took her and made her little more than a shimmering shadow with bright blue eyes.

xxxxxIcarus nearly cried as he felt his teeth rip into her neck. He had hoped she would've managed to dodge his attack, removed herself from his path moments before he landed. Still, he bit into the gray fur there. There was no time for mercy, and to truly prove himself, he could not hold back. He needed to show her that she should not restrain her attacks, so in turn, he never did himself. As she tore away, he felt the skin catch his fangs as add even more blood to that that welled in his mouth.

xxxxxPale-blue eyes peered at her as his mouth hung open, dripping Faiyrn's blood. He looked at her, truly, taking in her battered and beaten body. A snarl erupted from him, not one of aggression but of anger. If only a few of his attacks on A'cuil had not missed, she would not have suffered so. It was then he realized how close to being finished she was. The femme was barely holding on.

xxxxxHis breath caught as he glimpsed the spark that grew in her eye. She had transitioned, like A'cuil had, into the true warrior. Icarus licked his maw in anticipation. His hackles raised and he bristled. Maw snapped in her direction, almost taunting her into attacking. One moment she had been there, focused on him, the next he felt weighed down. A howl of pain bubbled through him as the first wound he had earned from the match caused his adrenaline to burn at maximum capacity. The shooting pain paralyzed him and he fell under her weight. A gray blur flitted in his sight as she launched herself off of him.

xxxxxThe wound on his neck had reopened. It had almost closed, but under the femme unforgiven maw, it had opened wide and pumped out his lifesource. For a moment he panted heavily on the ground, but as she spoke he gained his courage back. In contrast to the pain, a wolfish grin bloomed on his bloody maw. Lips peeled back at the edges to show an expression of relief. The femme had finally decided to take him seriously.

xxxxxSlowly, he pulled himself out of the muck. The moist ground below released protesting squelches as he rose, keeping him stuck to the ground for seconds longer. Once he was on his feet at last a low growl crawled out of his throat and over the mud towards the blue-eyed haze. "The warrior is strong." The growl croaked.

xxxxxHe found the haze intensely interesting, but all the same it was his opponent. He took measured steps towards what was once the femme. Her appearance was strange, alien almost to him. But, he remembered it from earlier on in the battle. With a snarl he bared his ice-white incisors at her and crouched low to the ground. It was his time at last. He launched himself at her once more, exuding a stifling heat of confidence.
