Perhaps this journey would be good for him - if he succeeded in locating Elizabeth then he would experience a great deal. Sparkles certainly didn't live life under the same rules as he did, that was for sure! She was overzealous when she wanted to be, she shared a great deal and she more often than not, let her mouth run wild. In her books it was better to let an individual know where they stood rather than demonstrating some level of indifference - after all, look where that had gotten Raphael!
Nevertheless, there was a chance that at least some individuals would appreciate the 'stuffy' behaviour that Sparkles was not a fan of. Somewhere in the world there were other soquili like that and whether Raphael opted to mimic them or find a balance remained to be seen. Apparently he was experiencing his own journey of discovery, although he was just a bit of a late bloomer in comparison to most.
Alas his internal conflicts and a desire for a notebook remained a secret. His failure to voice them ensured they remained silent musings, enough to avoid further scrutiny from Sparkles who probably wouldn't have appreciated the very neutral approach to pretty much everything in life.
"You could say that," she responded finally. Ceasing her humming she flicked her pale gaze towards him for a few moments and then rolled her shoulders in a lose shrugs. "I visit her often, although the first time I explored this region it wasn't terribly pleasant," she mused. It seemed she had no desire to divulge the information and continued at the same pace, scarcely reacting to the sudden steepness of the incline. Instead, she leant forward and continued to progress upwards to another piece of flattened land.
"The first time I explored I was mauled, interestingly, by her half brother though neither she nor I were aware of this at the time," she explained. Seemingly unaffected by this revelation, she lapsed into silence for a short while and focused on picking her way up the slope. There were particular areas that she needed to pay attention to, loose rocks could hamper her footing and she had no desire for scratched and scarred knees.
"It's a very pretty place though and the soquili are very pleasant up here, some of the more hospitable I've met," she finished. She didn't seem to be aware of the irony in this statement.

Being less used to walking in general and the terrain in particular, Raphael had to work much harder when the path got steeper; he fell slightly behind Sparkles and became quiet, intent on managing the climb as much as possible without needing to resort to wings. It was a bit of a relief to have the excuse not to talk, but he was honestly pleased when Sparkles started talking herself.
He couldn't fault her for her restraint. Other Soquilis might have thought her lack of an explanation rude or teasing; Raphael felt it perfectly reasonable and was honestly shocked when she followed that up with a specific, if brief, explanation of the occurrence. Raphael was THRILLED to have the excuse not to talk at the time, as he had absolutely no response for such a revelation at the time and didn't for another few moments.
Attacked? Mauled, even? And that was interesting? What kind of place was this, where a visiting mare would get mauled by a stallion? And Sparkles was much hardier than Elizabeth, had Elizabeth ventured into this region unknowingly? He found himself feeling a great deal more anxious about her than he had previously; the fact that Sparkles was headed back that way was a slight consolation, but very.
After managing the climb with only the lightest touch of assistance from his wings, Raphael was able to contribute once again to the conversation, hoping he wasn't being too pert. "Well, I am glad to see that you came out of the situation, Sparkles, for your friend and her brothers' sake as well as your own. I hope that it was nothing more than a misunderstanding and isn't a common occurrence up here."
Exactly what circumstances would make it common, he couldn't say; perhaps an initiation? Or a penalty for trespass into a certain area. "You seem a very courageous and forgiving mare, to be going back after such an incident. I have to confess, I am amazed."

His observations gave her reason to pause and she released a small sigh. It wasn't quite exasperation, but it was was certainly close and she did fixed her gaze on him in a rather pointed manner. She continued to observe him for quite some time before she shook her head slowly, accepting that like many, he seemed to underestimate how an individual could act despite what the surface might indicate.
"Everyone has their reasons for acting the way they do," she explained after a while. "Whether it's in their nature, whether they've been blackmailed or whether it's just down to a misunderstanding there tends to be a reason for everything. If they do it to be mean, cruel or inconsiderate then they'll find their come upence in the end," she turned her gaze away and puckered her lips as she examined the peaks. "For those who act in such a way for other reasons, the measures they take to make amends for this will dictate how they live in the future."
"I wasn't invited," she continued simply and returned her gaze to Raphael. "I entered a region that was untouched by the herd that lives on those peaks and I picked a bad time to do it. The fates decided that in showing such disregard it was appropriate that I be subject to the consequences of my actions and I was hurt," she paused to coil her tail around her leg and turned back to continue on her way up the slope. She'd given him more than enough of a breather.
...Yes, she'd heard him struggling.
"But he apologised, after the veil of shadows had cleared and he could see once more he showed great courage and offered his deepest regrets for his actions," a small smile lined her lips and she gave a soft snort of amusement. "It is only fitting that such genuine regret should be given acceptance and forgiveness. He is a good brother to Ashura and he's done much for her - the past is the past and we learn from it."
Young as she might have been she'd experienced a lot, more unusually, bubbly as she might have seemed she could be incredibly deep in her thought processes. She was intelligent in her own right, although some might have said she didn't make ample use of this intelligence. To this day she still couldn't appreciate how wrong her mother's teachings were, they were in essence her way of life, completely and utterly.
...What would she be without them?
"Your friend will be safe up here," she reassured him and picked her way through another awkward area of footing. "Those dark days are gone, I was just an instrument of fate in those moments. I don't need courage to come here, just a very bad excuse to visit my friend."
Odd as it might have seemed, the mare seemed completely unaffected by her encounter. However, if one were to meet Ashura they would find that this wasn't entirely accurate. Alas, this was a tale for another day.
"And by bad I mean bad, last time I even forgot to bring lunch, she had to make it," she confessed wrily.

Raphael hadn't caught the sigh, but it was hard to miss a focused stare. He wasn't really sure what he'd done to merit the stare, but it was certainly unsettling. The following explanation was helpful, but he still couldn't figure out why he'd first gotten stared at. After all, just because there was a circumstantial justification to a violent action didn't mean that the action was excused.
It was good that she hadn't been severely hurt, good that they could all laugh at it now, good that there had been no permanently scarred feelings, but still amazing to Raphael that any of them could regard it with such a disinterested, philosophical outlook.
There certainly were a great deal of differences between the deep forest and everywhere else.
"Well, I am glad to hear that it worked out in the end, and that things are now much more peaceful. If Elizabeth actually is up here, I am sure that peace is much more to her liking. Assuming that she is here, of course. I must confess, I have no idea where she actually is, and we are all equally mystified back home. But hopefully she is enjoying herself, if she is. Perhaps she has even run into your friend, and they are having lunch together!"
That seemed to make as much sense as anything. The idea of climbing a mountain to visit a friend because you'd forgotten your lunch was such an extraordinary one that he found himself staring, only to laugh as he reflected on what that meant. "It was very kind of her to provide you with that lunch, though I'm sure the pleasure of the company of a friend was more than worth the provision."

Sparkles didn't generally fit in with any set of soquili in that respect; where most soquili would be terrified for life or hellbent of vengeance she had settled into a very passive mindset. It was difficult for most to understand how or why, but then again, very few individuals appreciated the fact that she could hear spirits. To be completely honest very few individuals believed that she genuinely could hear the spirits, great or small, but it was how she led her life.
If the winds whispered and encouraged her to go in a certain direction then she would, without asking questions. If this led her to receive potentially life threatening injuries and she survived then she had served her purpose. She didn't have to understand that purpose, but she had long ago appreciated that the spirits operated in mysterious ways. They meddled when wanted to, they weren't always welcome, but things had a way of working out in the end. As a consequence she didn't really find her philosophical stance to be out of sorts or abnormal.
But had he just said Elizabeth?
She paused briefly and wrinkled her nose. That name seemed vaguely familiar and she couldn't figure out why. As an avid gossiper and wanderer, Sparkles had a way of picking up soundbites pretty much everywhere. She's heard that name before, especially in these regions but for the time being the reasoning for this seemed to escape her entirely. How interesting, she couldn't help but smile a little and cast her gaze upwards, it seemed even now the spirits had a way of nudging individuals towards one another when things were meant to be.
"Elizabeth?" she enquired casually and glanced towards him. She took note of the amusement but failed to take offence, he hadn't meant it maliciously and being realistic, she often brought amusement to people. "You seem to want to find this mare a great deal, a friend of yours I would assume," she continued. For the life of her she just couldn't put her hoof on how she knew that name. Well, there was still time, maybe it would come back to her.

It was true that Raphael didn't understand Sparkles' motives, and doubtful that he even could. While not a violent Soquili and naturally predisposed towards forgiveness, there was a strong sense of caution in him that would have served a barrier to eager returns, had he been in her place. The spirits would hardly have aided him...but oddly enough, they wouldn't have been a shock to him. It was a little known fact to the greater world, but his mother had been haunted by spirits herself, though in her case their intents had been sinister and nearly drove Hienna to despair.
All told, he would rather have Sparkles' form of spirits. Scratch that, he would rather his MOTHER have Sparkles' form of spirits. Perhaps if she would have had them, she would have had a less traumatic youth...though had things been different, then it was very probable he wouldn't exist. No, it was for the best that things happened as they were. Perhaps that was some of the logic behind Sparkles' attitude, that even the most horrid of things happened for a reason-
"Yes, Elizabeth. Elizabeth Swann. She's very close to my family, actually, and is my godmother." Which was true; Elizabeth had been close friends with his father since the former had come to the Kawani lands, and she had been there for Zaphiro and Hienna in their period of deepest hardship. Raphael regarded Elizabeth as a second mother, a close aunt; after all, she had helped birth him! "I am confident that she is fine, it's just this is somewhat unusual, so we want to make sure she's alright."
That was the short version, anyway; anything more than that was bound to get complicated.

In some perverse way maybe Raphael would have almost understood Sparkles's explanation if she'd chosen to clarify it. He would probably never grasp the concept completely, but this didn't mean that he wouldn't take a good stab at it. Unfortunately for both of them he didn't ask for clarification and she didn't provide it without prompting and as a consequence neither would be privvy to the other's thoughts or preferences. This in mind, it was on to other topics!
And she really did know that name from somewhere.
Understandably her brow furrowed as he discussed who this 'Elizabeth' was and her mind moved like clockwork. Her lips pressed firmly together now and again as she sifted through the various soquili she had met, heard of and so on. She could guarantee she hadn't met the mare but the name had been dropped at one point and not that long ago either. She could surmise from this that it had been during a period when she was in this region - maybe she'd been up visiting Ashura? It continued to puzzle her for a little while longer and she picked her way up the slope in silence.
She did nod every now and then as he explained who this individual was, politely listening to what he said though she provided him with no immediate feedback. She remained decidedly preoccupied until something tweaked and she came to a rather abrupt halt.
"I say, she didn't get married did she?" she enquired suddenly.

"Married?" This conversation seemed to be one surprise after another, and Raphael still hadn't gotten used to them. It was a bit funny, in one sense, because he had been surprised enough times already that nothing Sparkles said should be causing any visible surprise. After all, the mare was voluntarily visiting a place that she'd been attacked! Badly attacked, even.
But he hadn't expected Sparkles to actually be aware of Elizabeth in any fashion, and he definitely hadn't expected THAT.
He was aware of what the term 'marriage' meant, though it wasn't the common term in their parts. 'Joining' was the normal term, or occasionally 'lifemating', but 'marriage' was the same thing. He was pretty sure, anyway.
But the context and his unfamiliarity made him cautious, and as he climbed up the hillside, he clarified cautiously, "Married...as in lifemated?" It was a bit silly, he knew, but as Elizabeth had never mentioned anything remotely along the lines of lifemating to anyone, his caution, as far as he could tell, was justified.

"Yes, married..." Sparkles repeated with a quirk of her brow. It wasn't a difficult concept for her to grasp despite it never being one of her own personal considerations. Ever since she had started travelling she had been introduced to multiple terms for it, from lifemating to bonding she had heard them all and could probably use anyone of them as reference. Given that 'marriage' was the most recent one she had heard she could only assume that this was the most appropriate - she figured that was the language adopted by those soquili who lived up on the slopes at least.
When he went on to clarify and answer his own question she merely shook her head and gave a chuckle. "Lifemating, bonding, marriage - they are all the same in principle," she pointed out smoothly. Having recovered from her revelation she was now comfortable to continue on her way up the slope, though her immediate concern was more for brunch than for quick progress towards her overall destination. Now that she'd actually been on the move for a little while she was beginning to regret that she hadn't chosen to eat something at breakfast - ah well, if anything she could blame the bird for putting her off her food earlier!
"There was a bonding not long ago on these slopes, I met one of the family on his way back down," she explained and tilted her head to the side. She'd met Fenghuang of course, greeted him in passing and chatted with him briefly as he jogged on the spot. He had been diving down the mountain at that particularly time, skidding to a halt every now and then to have polite conversation with those he recognised and hadn't seen in quite some time - Sparks had been one of those individuals.
"Although he mentioned a 'Lizzy', not an 'Elizabeth' but from my understanding they are one in the same - this is why I asked. Perhaps it is another Elizabeth but that would be the only one I would have heard of around here," she mused thoughtfully. Even then, it had only been a recent arrival as she'd been in this area for a long while and hadn't heard of this particular mare until then.

While it was a relief to know that he was thinking of the right thing (the fewer colloquialisms he had to learn the better, after all), finding out that they were talking about the same thing did little to ease Raphael's surprise and confusion at what Sparkles was saying. Before, he had been doing his best to refrain from emoting or showing any surprise at what Sparkles was doing; Zaris' behavior had merited understanding and acceptance for Sparkles. But this news was so unexpected, so completely unforeseen, that Raphael was nothing so much as a gaping youth.
Well, a metaphorically gaping youth; he had enough control of his motor skills that his mouth was properly closed. Mostly.
It wasn't until Sparkles mentioned the possibility that it might be another Elizabeth that Raphael was able to properly voice a thought again, the thought of Elizabeth being lifemated to a stranger up in the mountains taking a bit of time to even consider. But once the possibility was mentioned, things became easier; after all, Elizabeth wasn't THAT uncommon a name; on top of that, there were very few that called Elizabeth Lizzy. In fact, he only knew of he, his sister, and his brother calling her Lizzy, and that had started when they were young and bad at enunciation. If the Soquili Sparkles had spoken to called the mare in question Lizzy, then it was very likely it was a different mare. Easy enough!
"Well, I can't really say. I mean, it's possible that it's a different mare even if you haven't heard of any others; I don't know that Elizabeth is in this region at all, so..." It was probable that it was a different Elizabeth. Highly probably, even. But still... "If it's not an imposition, I would like to take a look all the same. It's probably not her, but I really should check every possibility."

It wasn't an imposition for Sparkles, after all, this wasn't her territory. She was recognised as a regular visitor the area but beyond that she had no jurisdiction or say. She could warn borderguards that there were visitors in their midst but that would require finding them, and the vast majority of the time they already knew. She'd never really figured out how they did that but who was she to question? They had unique methods of communication from what she gathered, maybe a secret language or two, regardless it wasn't in her interests to learn it. So long as they had no qualms with her appearing every now and then to visit her friend then she had no room to complain! However she did take a moment to consider his words and made a reasonable assumption that if he was with her then it was highly unlikely that he would be stopped - she was a trusted visitor and as a consequence he wouldn't be hassled. That being said, did she really want to hike to the top of one slope, then go around to the other side?
...It really amounted to two trips.
Maybe that's what he meant by 'imposition'? She puzzled over this for a short while as she continued on. Opting to remain quiet (for once), she focused only on locating a suitable food source. She wanted breakfast and she wanted it now, she would find this meal before she continued on. He didn't appear to be in much of a rush anyway and this worked to her advantage - it was with a swish of her tail that she quickened her pace and deviated slightly from her path. Aiming instead for a piece of flatland, a plateau in a manner of speaking, she sought out her meal first and left the rest of the climb for later. Whether or not he had satiated his own hunger this morning was beyond her concern, she would have bet a reasonable amount of apples on the fact he was well fed since he hadn't been insulted by his feather brained chicken!
"Well if you want to find out for sure that's the best way to go about it," she agreed with a tiny bob of her head. This was promptly followed by a snort as her forelock tumbled across her gaze, not the most dignified of actions but it had to be done. "Besides if you want information about the comings and goings on these mountains then it's usually a good idea to go to the source," she added. She would have found it impossible to comment on who or what had passed through this particular territory, but if anyone knew it would be the folks who lived here. Of course, this 'Elizabeth' he spoke of could have slipped under the radar as some soquili managed to do but you never know, perhaps she'd been seen.
"Either way, even if they haven't seen her then you'll at least get a better guide to advise you on the hotspots at least," she finished with a mild smile.

Mental multitasking was something Raphael had little experience with, as anyone privy to his current thoughts would easily be able to see. His concern regarding Zaris' bad impression and making amends had been metaphorically shoved off to the side when he received the intelligence of possible Elizabeth sightings; while he was still behaving the same as he had, his overly solicitous edge had vanished. Whether that was good or bad had to be judged by others, because he hadn't even noticed.
Mulling over the situation and the possible outcomes, he followed after Sparkles without really paying attention to where they were going and how they were getting there. More pressing matters were whether or not it was his Elizabeth, what he should do if it WAS her, what he should if it WASN'T her (because if that was the case, then he would have intruded upon a pair of newly mated strangers...), whether he should try and find some sort of gift regardless; it was a very atypical situation, and he wanted to handle it in the proper way. Whatever that proper way was.
Sparkles was right in her assumption that he wasn't hungry. Point of fact, he had just finished up eating when she had first appeared, and he was good to go for a long time. But preoccupation aside, he was still a gentleman and he would respect Sparkles' need for food.
Not that he knew she was hungry yet, though he had observed that they had left the path. Perhaps this was the most direct route to her destination, or a more comfortable climb. Either way, she was the one helping him, and he would do his best to accommodate HER while she accommodated HIM. She was making good sense, too. "I most certainly agree. There is also the possibility that even if this isn't the Elizabeth I am looking for that she might have encountered her, if she is a stranger to these parts as well."
That was a cheerful thought!

At least he could think positively about a situation, Sparkles would give him that. Nevertheless even she knew when a 'filler' wasn't required and as such, refrained from commenting as some mares might choose to. Instead she wound her way round another little pathway and finally began to cross through the open expanse of what would have been a mountain meadow had it been spring. Unfortunately she wasn't graced with such luck and as a consequence it remained otherwise coated in a layer of snow - perhaps a little lighter through the approaching spring.
Eventually she came to a halt, standing tall in the centre of the clearing she looked both left and then right. Ascertaining that the food she sought was not in either of these areas, she pulled a mildly disgruntled expression. In her defence it had been a while since she had been up here. Or rather, it had been quite some time since she had last fed up here - she was entitled to her mental hiccup. Alas it wasn't long before a recognisable feature caught her pale gaze and it seemed to light up.
Food!
Her tail gave an abrupt flick of delight and with a small squeal she hopped forward and trotted with renewed enthusiasm in a north-easterly direction. Her destination? It was a cluster of fir trees and beneath them and their pine needles lay a very tasty thing indeed. There was nothing more satisfying than a nice juicy root, they were the sweetest food she could get up here and frankly she had quite the sweet tooth.
It was with a rather large measure of disregard that she left Raphael behind her and approached her destination, promptly beginning to dig when she got there. Well, the kid seemed to be in shock so he needed some time to his own thoughts, right?

His expression still a bit mullish, Raphael didn't so much walk after Sparkles as drift after her. Oh, he saw her; he was making a point of staying with her, but when presented with a conundrum of such a delicate nature, he had to take time to think about it. Though he would never be so ungracious or boorish as to even THINK that his upbringing had been lacking, the closeness of home and the relative lack of exposure to other Soquili cultures was not as beneficial as his adult self would like. This morning had been one dramatic example of that, one that he would likely never be able to consider without wincing, and this was only the first Soquili they'd met up here! It was far too easy, when surrounded by familiar things, to take them for granted and accept them as the universal rule when they might actually be a minority; possibly even a very unusual minority.
All together, this meant one thing for Raphael: He was a fish out of water, and good as his intentions were, he would have to be mindful of how he presented those intentions.
As Sparkles came to a halt and began to paw away at the snow, Raph drifted to a halt beneath one of the firs and leaned up against it. It was a scratchy tree; the bark was rough against his flank, and he automatically rubbed his shoulder up for a scratch as he considered the best course of action. Accepting Sparkles' words as the truth, he would need to stay on foot and not just fly into what was certainly well-guarded territory. In a paradoxical way, it reminded him of home: the equivalent of not intruding unless invited or introduced. The difference was that here, he ran the risk of being maimed without that introduction.
Yes, that was just a trifle atypical for him...

Maimed?
Well, depending on the guard that was encountered it may be a possibility but he was more liable to be 'pulled over' for questioning rather than torn to shreds. Even Sparkles could attest to that and she had met most of the guards, varying from the pleasant sort to the much sterner stick in the muds. Even the grumpy ones had been polite, so while he was an intruder in their lands, they wouldn't be completely unreasonable or that would have been the unicorn's assumption. Alas, it had been a while and a few changes might have resulted in a different stance towards visitors but she hadn't heard anything new about it!
Unfortunately Sparkles possessed no ability to read minds and as a direct result of this, she was unable to reassure, correct or voice any opinions on his inner musings. Instead, she continued to dig, pausing to nibble on the grass roots she found until she was completely satisfied by her meal. In a few hours and after further exercise she would be hungry again, but she'd eaten enough to secure enough energy for the rest of her trip - or rather, she had secured enough energy to reach a point in this particular herd's turf where she could summon up some attention and get some help.
...Basically, what it boiled down to, was that this particular unicorn know where she could stand and make an absolute racket until someone came to investigate. If Raphael had been hoping for a more modest introduction, he was sorely mistaken.
Once the mare had finished her meal she finally returned her attention to the matter at hand. She gave herself a few stretches, her legs first, then her tail and finally her neck - it was then that she took a deep breath and proceeded to putter passed him and back the way she'd come. Her intention was to return to the beaten track she'd been following which would eventually lead up to the top of a cliff face - it wasn't the highest region in this herd's lands but it was the best for acoustics. When she gave a holler from here she would be heard, in fact, she'd probably be heard by quite a few soquili that weren't even on patrol.
Aha, but she always had been one for a memorable entrance.
