Zul’s questioning about her relationship with Rivener ruffled the rose’s petals slightly. She knew full well that the demon was not intending to offend her in any way, shape or form; however the knowledge that the person she had considered to be like a brother had not spoken to Zul (apparently not even a passing mention to establish that they knew of each other) was just slightly upsetting. Admittedly it seemed as though it had been an exceedingly long time since she and the scorpion had met up and the last striking encounter with her similarly coloured brother had cumulated in an argument, but even so – she personally still felt attached enough to Rivener for his name to pop up semi often in conversation.

I knew Rivener very well.” The slight distress of the realisation of her distancing from the sigel was on her face as she spoke but rather than burdening her friend with the issues she tried to withdraw them back inside again, fixing her face with a blank look; Impassive and not revealing how she was worried about the state of her friendships. Looking at it, her isolation from the rest of the world – her leaning towards quietness and periods of solitude – had caused a few buds of friendship to wither. Lucia for one. The cat had apologised but despite saying that they would give being best friends a go again she had only occasionally sent the kitten a text or two keeping up to date with her life. If she wasn’t careful more people close to her, that she had worked hard to foster relationships with after her being abandoned by Shuura, would slip from her grasp. Better to make the effort and be open and available?

With this in mind she let her facade drop and tilted her head to glance backwards out of her midnight sun eyes at the cerulean droplets set into Zul’s handsomely sculpted face. “I say knew... Because we don’t talk much anymore. He used to be like a brother to me Zul. When nobody else knew me or had forgotten me Rivener still cared and made the effort.” Although the tone of her voice was informative before anything else, answering the demon’s question, there was an inherent sadness to it that spoke volumes about how the shadow was feeling. Surprisingly open compared to how guarded and considerate about dumping her problems on others the dark frei usually was. "I wish we saw more of each other.... But he's busy; I can not blame him."

"Interesting! I suppose you must find out all sorts of new things every day. There must be so much to learn." Ethan was pleased to see that Alex’s tired expression had lifted as she spoke about the nature of her work. Research; being surrounded by the beings that she so obviously loved dearly; devoting her whole life to Zul and his brethren and... getting paid for it. It was really a dream job for the Italian and Ethan was glad to see that although it was evidently a hard job, she was taking to it like a duck to water. “Well as I said... I don’t think that anyone but you could be so perfectly suited to that line of work.

Had he been able to read her mind, Zul would have done all he could to assure the Rose that it was no short-coming on her part that the Scorpion had not mentioned her; whenever the Sigel and the demon were together, there was precious little space between them for anything but one another. Even he had a tendency to get wrapped up in the moments when with the darker male, though he did have a better disposition about not forgetting his friends when in their presence. As it were, he was rather oblivious to her inner upset and simply continued his work, eyes upon her ruby skin though his slender ears were perked for the sound of her voice.

When she did speak, the use of past-tense made his blue eyes lift, pausing in his application of what remained of the aloe, gazing quietly at her. For a moment, he thought he saw something in her face that was as fragile and delicate as the name of her soul, but it was just as quickly smoothed over into a blank neutrality. Zul suddenly understood what his own face must look like when he kept his thoughts from being known; it was a painful notion, almost, especially having thought he was getting through to the Shadow Frei. His fingers moved in a few slow strokes before pausing again, caught by her sunset gaze. As she spoke, he listened - and felt something in his chest try to cave in.

We don't talk much anymore, she said. He used to be like a brother to me. The demon stared helplessly at Vyn, his brows curving over his eyes in an upturned manner, giving his expression something close to loss. He could feel Eirdirsceol's glare on him as the Rose opened up about her feelings towards Rivener, the fingers of guilt threading in his chest unfamiliarly. "He'd never be too busy for you, Vyn," he said quietly, trying to push off his outside perspective. "He...you know he gets caught up in the moment. Those moments can last a lifetime if you don't nudge him from time to time." Zul offered a faint smile then, shrugging off the awkwardness that settled on his bare shoulders. How many others had their relationship affected...?

The woman laughed softly at the continued praise, fluttering one hand and rubbing her cheek with the other. "Ethan, I'm going to faint if you keep this up," Alex grinned at the businessman, though her words only served to deepen the red on her dark skin. Her body language went between professional when speaking of herself and her work, to a lax comfort when poking fun at the older man at her side. "So tell me about you! How is your business going? How's your loft?" Green eyes flicked briefly to Vyn, then back to Ethan, some of the mirth in her expression softening into quiet concern, her smile intact though laced with a sense of knowing. The fel virus had been some months ago, but unlike most of the Guardians, she still felt its presence keenly, idly rubbing her healed arms in the memory of it all.

Although Ethan liked finding out how the woman and her ward had been keeping more than exposing his own - rather dull – life, he laughed amiably and replied to her inquisitions. Friendships should, after all, be two way streets; as much give as there was take... It would be awkward if this pleasant little session turned into some sort of Spanish inquisition with him firing round after round of kind hearted but potentially intrusive queries at the Italian. “Business is good. It’s a fairly busy time of the year – you wouldn’t think it but around this time is when the gears to do with Christmas start to turn... You have to start planning things months in advance; advertising campaigns, getting on trend. It’s ludicrous when the weather outside is hot enough to scorch and you’re getting emails full of Saint Nickolas and his elves.

The subject of the comedy of his situation displayed Ethan moved on to respond to Alex’s slightly touchier query. “The penthouse is fine. I contracted someone to sort out the damages as soon as possible. Replacing a lot of the glass and such was expensive but I didn’t mind all that much. Better than having cracks here and there as nasty reminders...” His eyes lingered upon the permanent scars on the LAB worker’s arms – those could not be so easily removed... “As it happened the man I employed was a raevan guardian... Or at least, he had a raevan with him when he came round. That boy was a strange one though... I don’t remember his name... Black hair, almost tired looking, he had a hood? Do you know him?

Meanwhile Vyn was feeling a smidgen embarrassed. Zul was talking sense – her elder brother was the kind of person who lived life in such an intense way, he was so fiery headed and passionate about nearly everything, that it wasn’t surprising that he could become blinkered and blind to people.. Simply by taking the demon’s advice she would probably have Rivener spouting profuse apologies and arranging to meet up for a catch up session. It was her own quietness and tendency to sink into the shadows that caused half her problems... “You are right Zul. Rivener is a good person, he does not just forget people. I’ll speak to him soon..

The application of the miracle salve was nearly complete now and Vym pondered whether, whilst she was here, it would be worthwhile informing the LAB of her progress. After all, last time she had seen a LAB official it had been Dr. Kyou and Lazerus had worked with her on aiding her with the control of her powers. The kind guardian was busy in conversation with Ethan at that moment so the shadow rose spoke to the other raevan, he was seemingly his guardian’s assistant so chances are he would know: ’“Zul, would Alex like to ask me any questions? I heard her say it was her job to know about us...

The Italian listened with interest to what Ethan had to say; she'd never had a mind for business, otherwise she would have undoubtedly worked for herself by now. Alex could be independent, a little exuberant, but when it came down to brass tax, she liked not holding all the responsibility when she laid her head down. At least, not in the sense of employing others. "It is a bit ridiculous but that's what we know Christmas to be, right? Tank tops, board shorts and Mrs. Claus in a bathing suit." She chuckled appreciatively under her breath, resting her hands in her lap now that it seemed her social ineptness was passing in favor of speaking about Ethan.

His explanation of his home made her smile fade a little, softening but not disappearing, listening to both his words and his tone. He was good for Vyn, she could tell - he held no malice in his voice or posture towards what had happened to her, but rather, a deep concern for her well being that made Alex feel warm and cozy inside. She missed his glance, as it were, remembering the dark, moist-smelling penthouse and how terrified Ethan had been that day. The image was torn out of her memory as she was posed a question, causing her dark brows to furrow in thought. Only when Ethan mentioned a hood did her face brighten with recognition -- and then darken with hesitation. "Yes, Basil," she commented, shaking her head. "I wish Genie all the luck in the world with him -- but I don't know who the man was. I discharged him into a woman's care. He...was special, Kyou had a hand in his make up, so I'm not really sure about him."

As Vyn spoke, the demon was expecting some sort of gentle chiding or even reprimand, even though he knew it was ridiculous -- his relationship with Rivener was a secret, no one actually knew about it except for the damned Wisp. The words spoken earned a quick, grateful smile from Zul, though likely not for the reasons one would expect on the surface. "He's a social butterfly. Sometimes it's best to whack him with the net from time to time." Bowing his tri-horned head in unspoken apology at his bad humor, he swallowed down another smile and withdrew his hands from her stained porcelain skin. His application of the aloe salve was finished.

The question posed made his bright eyes turn to her light-swallowing gaze, cocking his head to the side. "I'm not sure," he admitted, flicking his attention briefly towards the two Guardians. He knew his woman well enough to read her body language and expressions, and though she was having a perfectly normal conversation with Ethan, he could see the calculating light in her green gaze. It seemed she was already at work. "Do you think there's anything she should know?" Zul countered with kind curiosity, returning his attention to the Rose. If something was wrong, it would be important to bring it up, but if all was the same as it had been...he didn't see the need to put Vyn through anymore agitation than she'd already suffered.
