Eugh. What should he do? It felt like he had blown this. It wasn't going like he thought it would; but then, when did a male ever know what a female was thinking? At least, accurately. He let his own eyes sink down to the ground, trying to gather up some words. They weren't coming.
"I blew it, didn't I?" he asked with a chuckle. It made him feel a bit better, if foolish. Without giving it much thought, he extended one art to rest his paw atop her's. It steadied him a bit, but he still had no idea what to say. "Guess I did kind of rush it. I'm sorry, Lamkana, I've never been very good at any of this. Especially when it feels a little...well, personal. Too used to living for the pride, not used to really living for myself."
Her words were sweet, but as she had seemed to feel so awkward and stiff, they stung him a bit more than anything.

"Oh, no!" she half-cried out as he leaned in to speak to her. She certainly didn't want him to think that he'd done anything wrong. How could he live up to expectations he didn't know were there? Especially ones formed by a half-brained adolescent?
"You're doing wonderfully, Umoja, don't let my silliness make you feel bad," she was so busy trying to psyche him up about being good at whatever he was trying to do that she didn't exactly notice his paw moving to rest on hers. Once she felt the brush of pad on fur, her eyes widened a little and she felt her cheeks burning - she was sure her face had to be shining with actual light by this point. She opened her mouth as if she might actually say something else and then closed it again nervously, a shy smile plastered on her face. She was coming around to believing him finally, but it that meant shyness was prevailing in the face of her usual boldness.
"This is a good first step," she said quietly, glancing down at their paws with that same shy little smile, "a very good one."

Umoja smiled. Well, maybe more of a grin. So he wasn't as clumsy as he thought. He was so rusty with all of this, he still couldn't help but feel a little bad. Just a little bit.
"I'm glad," he said, feeling confident as well as nervous/excited all over again. He had gotten past the first step, and in hindsight, it was probably the easiest step. Now would be the time where they would really get to know each other better, and part of him was nervous. She knew everything about his past, as he wasn't some sort of silent figure; it made him feel exposed. He felt like he knew nothing about her, even if he knew bits and pieces about her life. Moreso from just being informed than anything.
He knew this was the real test. He would take it slowly, but he wouldn't deny that he was excited about it!
